AIMS: The aims of the Asthma Academy study were to (1) evaluate the telehealth performance of DNP students, (2) evaluate the perceived learning experience of DNP students and (3) investigate whether an association exists related to student performance and family caregiver outcomes. DESIGN: A descriptive study was conducted with doctor of nursing practice students. METHODS: Students conducted telehealth visits to help family caregivers of children with asthma and were rated on their performance by two faculty members using a rubric. Student perception data were gathered via survey. RESULTS: Out of a total possible score of 15 points, the mean telehealth performance score of students was 13.38 points. Students indicated the telehealth experience was valuable and that they were satisfied with their learning. This model of leveraging telehealth to bridge nursing students to the community may be adapted to help family caregivers of children with various disease foci.

Background: Caregivers of children with asthma demonstrate higher levels of anxious and depressive symptoms when compared to caregivers of healthy children. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to: 1) Evaluate feasibility and acceptability of two nurse-led, remotely offered interventions for caregivers of children with asthma; 2) Compare effectiveness of two interventions (a virtual education session and a virtual education session supplemented with a telehealth visit) in relation to caregiver outcomes, and 3) Assess the preliminary effect of the interventions on caregivers' knowledge of asthma, sleep, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Methods: A mixed methods approach was used inclusive of a qualitative, descriptive design and randomized controlled trial design. Caregivers were provided virtual education and telehealth visits and evaluated from pre-posttest. Results: The intervention was found to be feasible and acceptable. Both the virtual education session and telehealth visit were effective. The intervention had a significant effect on caregiver's asthma knowledge and depressive symptoms (p<.05), but did not affect caregiver's sleep or anxiety. Qualitative analysis of the virtual educational session revealed themes of 1) valuable learning experience, 2) more medication education needed, and 3) appreciated remote format. Qualitative analysis of the telehealth visits revealed themes of 1) educational, helpful, and worthwhile and 2) virtual offering was easy and convenient. Conclusions: Remotely conducted, nurse-led interventions such as virtual education sessions and telehealth visits are a feasible, acceptable, and effective way to improve caregiver outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Opportunities for students to participate in global health mission trips have expanded. However, lack of pre-departure training is often reported and has been associated with negative outcomes for participants. Simulation is an effective method for providing customized situational learning. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a Pre-Departure Training program incorporating simulation for advanced practice registered nursing (APRN) students prior to a global health mission trip. DESIGN: This program employed a pre-posttest design with surveys administered at baseline, after a computer-based learning module, and after a simulation-based learning experience. SETTING: A university in the Southeastern United States. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two APRN students in their first clinical rotation of the program. METHODS: APRN students with interest in global health missions partake in a pre-departure training program. Pre-departure training includes a computer-based learning module followed by an outdoor simulation replicating a low-income setting. Pre-posttest surveys assessed students' perceptions of confidence, skill, knowledge and comfort regarding global health. A skills checklist was used to evaluate student clinical patient presentation during the simulation. RESULTS: Students' preparedness scores increased after the computer-based learning and significantly increased after the simulation. In the simulation, 42% of students successfully completed their patient presentation during their first attempt while 58% required remediation. CONCLUSION: After the pre-departure program, students felt more confident in their global health knowledge, and felt significantly more prepared to provide health care in a low-income country. Schools of nursing offering global health mission trips or study abroad programs should consider implementing pre-departure programs using simulation as a teaching method.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of diversity in the master's prepared nursing workforce. One nursing school implemented a scholarship program for students from disadvantaged backgrounds enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Primary Nurse Practitioner tracks. METHOD: Awardees were required to be full-time students from disadvantaged backgrounds with financial need. Each student was matched with a faculty member for regular mentorship. Student progress was evaluated every three months, with follow-up 1 year after graduation. RESULTS: A total of 45 students received the Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) over 2 consecutive years. Of the 45 students, 26 (58%) identified themselves as Hispanic and 11 (24%) as black. A total of 42 (93%) of 45 SDS students completed the original plan of study and passed the national certification board. CONCLUSION: The SDS serves as a model of an effective mentorship program to assist nurse practitioner students from disadvantaged backgrounds. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(5):287-290.].

BACKGROUND: A critical component of doctor of nursing practice (DNP) education is practice immersion. DNP programs require 1000 hours of clinical practice experience to obtain the DNP degree. PROBLEM: Faculty struggle with providing meaningful clinical experiences congruent with the role of the DNP. APPROACH: This article describes a unique practice immersion course joining DNP students with community health care partners to provide meaningful experiences with the potential to transform health care. DNP students are assigned system-level projects designed to create organizational change. OUTCOMES: Over the course of 4 years, the practice immersion opportunities more than doubled from 30 to 66 live projects. Integrating collaborative practice immersion into the curriculum builds students' leadership skills and strengthens long-standing bonds among academia, practice, and the community. CONCLUSIONS: The creation of structured, meaningful collaborations between DNP students and community partners is an approach that has the potential to facilitate transformative, sustainable change in health care.

BACKGROUND: There is disparity in the nursing work-force of minority leaders. The aim of this article is to describe and evaluate an innovative program designed to provide mentorship and increase leadership skills of minority nursing students. METHOD: An innovative mentorship program was developed including coordination of financial aid meetings, incorporating technology, enacting an online preimmersion course, choosing and training mentors, hosting a lunch-and-lead leadership series, and using intensive review sessions and tutoring. Program evaluation data were analyzed using mixed methods. RESULTS: All 40 participants passed the NCLEX-RN and had obtained employment after the program. Of the 20 respondents, 25% already had obtained a leadership role in nursing. Qualitative data about the program revealed categories of leadership, networking, mentorship, more time, and gratitude. CONCLUSION: This program was successful in promoting retention, graduation, and development of future minority nurse leaders. [J Nurs Educ. 2018;57(9):526-534.].

Tobacco use is a major threat to public health. Current guidelines suggest that healthcare professionals in the emergency department provide routine smoking cessation screening and interventions. Evidence suggests that an educational intervention among registered nurses in the emergency department may increase education and referral for smoking cessation of patients who use tobacco products. An educational module regarding smoking cessation counseling was provided to registered nurses in the emergency department at a private hospital in South Florida. A pre- and postintervention self-reported survey evaluated changes in nurses asking about tobacco use; advising to quit; assessing readiness, assisting, and arranging follow-up for patients who smoke to quit; and encouraging pharmacological agents. All participating nurses screened for tobacco use most of the time before and after the intervention. However, the number of nurses who assessed readiness, assisted, arranged follow-up for patients and encouraged the use of pharmacological agents increased significantly in the postsurvey. Study findings agree with previous research indicating that nurses routinely screen for tobacco and advise to quit. However, implementing smoking cessation education and referral resources may better equip registered nurses in the emergency department to take an active role initiating follow-up interventions for patients who screen positive for tobacco use. Educational interventions among these nurses can increase knowledge of and utilization of existing resources to help patients quit.

BACKGROUND: According to The Joint Commission (2012), the leading cause of sentinel events in the United States was miscommunication. Lack of thorough and accurate communication remains a serious challenge in healthcare and an educational priority in schools of nursing. Virtual clinical simulation is an online educational approach where students use avatars to practice various skills. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the educational innovation of using virtual clinical simulation to improve communication skills of BSN students. The objectives of the simulations were to 1) recognize significant patient data and 2) accurately perform the ISBAR communication technique. DESIGN: The study used a within-group, time-series design with eight students. Students participated in two synchronous virtual simulations in an online virtual clinical environment called CliniSpace. Students performed in groups of four to five students. METHODS: Students performed in two virtual simulations in groups of four to five students. Student performances were scored by two raters using the CliniSpace ISBAR Rating Sheet. Field notes from debriefing sessions were analyzed for content. RESULTS: Mean group student performance scores more than doubled from performance one to performance two. This change was found to be statistically significant, p<.001. Field notes revealed that students listened to how their peers communicated and learned from them. Students expressed having less anxiety, knowing what to expect, and having "better flow" with communication. Students verbalized learning to assess the patient prior to calling the physician and to give a recommendation to the physician.
