RESUMO

The sesquicentennial was a unique opportunity to let the community know about the hospitals proud history. The hospital was featured throughout the year in articles and editorials in the local papers, professional hospital publications, and even nationally by Willard Scott on the "Today" show. The whirlwind of activities and events surrounding the anniversary created a spirit of pride in the hospital that will be invaluable for future fund-raising efforts.

RESUMO

The Nurse Practice Act governs the practice of licensed nurses in the US and prohibits these nurses from delegating administration of medication to other school personnel. Education law entitles students to health services during the school day which include medication administration. Financial considerations do not permit all schools to have a full time nurse. Failure to uphold education law risks financial penalties to the school district. An unresolved conflict arises for the nurse who is unable to satisfy one regulation without violating the other. The nurse's license to practice is at risk. Well meaning groups promulgate laws that produce conflicts and professional dilemmas for the school nurse.

RESUMO

Children from broken homes, especially females, have an increased tendency to visit the school nurse. Complaints are often ill-defined, possibly psychosomatic. These children may require additional medical and emotional support from the school nurse. The effect the broken home may have upon a student has important implications for the physical and emotional health of today's youth. An awareness of this finding can provide school nursing personnel valuable insight in the assessment of students who visit the school nurse.
