RESUMO

The use of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) to inhibit scarring following filtration surgery has been hampered by corneal epithelial defects and their accompanying inflammation. This toxicity, which occurs during the crucial period in which the risk of bleb failure is highest, has previously been a relative contraindication to further 5-FU use. We have found the early placement of a therapeutic bandage contact lens permits extended administration of 5-FU during this period, minimizing discomfort and inflammation as well as enhancing bleb survival.

RESUMO

A 12-year-old girl was diagnosed as having mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal gland. To our knowledge, only 14 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal gland have been reported in the literature; this is the first case occurring in a child. Clinically, this tumor presented as a painless proptosis with inferonasal displacement of the globe. Histologically, it showed infiltrating lobules of neoplastic cells consisting of epidermoid cells admixed with mucin-containing cells and a mild lymphocytic infiltration in the stroma. The mucous cells stained positively with periodic acid-Schiff, Alcian blue, and mucicarmine dyes, but resisted digestion with hyaluronidase. This case illustrates that one should not exclude any diagnostic possibility just because the patient does not seem to belong to the appropriate age group.

RESUMO

Five cases of breast carcinoma metastasizing to the choroid were investigated and compared with the current literature. Choroidal metastases were found to bear an unfavorable prognostic factor (median survival of 11 months), and are related to heavy metastatic involvement even when the latter is not evident. Two patients responded to treatment, one to irradiation and one to systemic chemotherapy. The peak incidence is in perimenopasual women (mean age 48.2) which suggests that in this group of patients ocular examination may be advised for the routine followup.
