J Strength Cond Res 37(6): 1163-1190, 2023-The origins of weightlifting and feats of strength span back to ancient Egypt, China, and Greece, with the introduction of weightlifting into the Olympic Games in 1896. However, it was not until the 1950s that training based on weightlifting was adopted by strength coaches working with team sports and athletics, with weightlifting research in peer-reviewed journals becoming prominent since the 1970s. Over the past few decades, researchers have focused on the use of weightlifting-based training to enhance performance in nonweightlifters because of the biomechanical similarities (e.g., rapid forceful extension of the hips, knees, and ankles) associated with the second pull phase of the clean and snatch, the drive/thrust phase of the jerk and athletic tasks such as jumping and sprinting. The highest force, rate of force development, and power outputs have been reported during such movements, highlighting the potential for such tasks to enhance these key physical qualities in athletes. In addition, the ability to manipulate barbell load across the extensive range of weightlifting exercises and their derivatives permits the strength and conditioning coach the opportunity to emphasize the development of strength-speed and speed-strength, as required for the individual athlete. As such, the results of numerous longitudinal studies and subsequent meta-analyses demonstrate the inclusion of weightlifting exercises into strength and conditioning programs results in greater improvements in force-production characteristics and performance in athletic tasks than general resistance training or plyometric training alone. However, it is essential that such exercises are appropriately programmed adopting a sequential approach across training blocks (including exercise variation, loads, and volumes) to ensure the desired adaptations, whereas strength and conditioning coaches emphasize appropriate technique and skill development of athletes performing such exercises.

J Strength Cond Res 36(3): 674-679, 2022-Muscular strength in youth has been linked to health and physical benefits, enhanced movement skill, and an active lifestyle in adulthood. However, the relationship between maximum strength, athletic performance, and movement skill in youth females remains unclear. The purpose was to examine the relationship between maximum strength, athletic performance, and movement skill and determine whether differences exist between strong girls (SGs), average girls (AGs), and weak girls (WGs). One hundred four girls (age 14.0 ± 0.6 years, height 162.6 ± 5.9 cm, body mass 57.3 ± 9.7 cm) from a girls' secondary school performed an isometric midthigh pull (IMTP), double- and single-leg (right leg = R, left leg = L) countermovement jump, 10- and 20-m sprints, a drop vertical jump ,and the back squat assessment. Significance was set at p < 0.01 for correlations and p < 0.05 for one-way analysis of variance. Correlations revealed IMTP had significant small to large relationships with all performance variables (r = 0.27-0.62) except right-leg countermovement jump and left-leg countermovement jump height (r = 0.17-0.23). Relative IMTP had significant moderate to large relationships with all performance variables (r = 0.32-0.60). There were significant differences between strength groups for all performance measures. Strong girls had significantly faster sprint times than AGs. In addition, SGs and AGs performed significantly better than WGs in all assessments. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of strength for athletic performance and movement skill in adolescent girls.

ABSTRACT: Uthoff, A, Sommerfield, LM, and Pichardo, AW. Effects of resistance training methods on golf clubhead speed and hitting distance: A systematic review. J Strength Cond Res 35(9): 2651-2660, 2021-Resistance training is widely regarded within the golfing community to improve golf performance by increasing clubhead speed (CHS) and drive distance and can be classified into 3 categories: nonspecific, specific, and combined. However, it is currently unclear which resistance training methods are most effective in improving predictors of golf performance. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to compare the effectiveness of nonspecific, specific, and combined strength training methods on CHS and drive distance. A systematic search strategy was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines to identify eligible articles through PubMed, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE (EBSCO), and Google Scholar. The searches identified 4,557 potentially relevant results, with 20 studies that met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final review. Thirteen studies investigated nonspecific resistance training, one study investigated specific resistance training, and 7 studies investigated combined resistance training. Collectively, resistance training positively impacts golf CHS and hitting distance, but adaptations vary depending on the type and intensity of training, as well as subject's characteristics. Using a combination of nonspecific and golf-specific training (average increase of 4.1% CHS and 5.2% hitting distance) seems to enhance golf performance more than nonspecific strength training (average increase of 1.6% CHS and 4.8% hitting distance). Eight-week programs including golf-specific movements at high velocities for 3 to 4 sets of 5 to 15 repetitions are the most effective in increasing CHS and hitting distance. Future research investigating how golf-specific training influences CHS and hitting distance in various subgroups may provide further insight regarding prescription of this training type.

OBJECTIVES: To examine sports and physical education (PE) injury rates in youth females during a school year and to investigate if an association exists between injury and phase of the menstrual cycle. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: An online questionnaire was used to record training and competition exposure and self-reported injuries for 30-weeks. PARTICIPANTS: 103 PE students (12-15 years) from a girls' secondary school. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Injury rates and prevalence of acute, gradual onset/overuse and substantial injuries. RESULTS: On average, girls trained 3.4 h/week and competed 1 h/week. During the study, 74 participants reported 595 injuries. The average weekly prevalence of all injuries was 20.7% (95% CI: 20.0-21.3), of which 8.6% (95% CI: 8.3-9.0) were acute injuries and 12.0% (95% CI: 11.4-12.6) were gradual onset/overuse injuries. The overall rate of sport and PE injuries was 10.4 injuries/1000 h of exposure. The most common acute injury involved the ankle (35%) while the most common gradual onset/overuse injury involved the knee (51%). There was no significant association between the stage of the menstrual cycle and the likelihood of injury (P = 0.18). CONCLUSION: The high number of injuries in this population of girls suggests preventative measures, particularly targeting the lower extremity, are needed.

This study aimed to investigate the age-related differences in sprinting performance, kinematic and kinetic variables in girls aged between 7.0 and 15.3 years. Step-to-step spatiotemporal variables and ground reaction impulses during sprinting were collected in 94 Japanese girls across a 50 m inground force plate system. From the results, a difference in rate of development in sprinting performance in girls over 12.7 years compared with younger girls (YG) was observed. The older girls (OG) became slightly slower each year (-0.09 m/s/y) compared to the YG (0.24 m/s/y) who increased their running speed. Moreover, height increased by 6.3 cm/y in YG and only 3.6 cm/y in OG, while step length during the maximal speed phase increased by 0.08 m/y in YG and plateaued in OG (0.01 m/y). Propulsive impulse during the initial acceleration phase was the kinetic variable to differ in rate of development between the age groups with an increase of 0.024 Ns/y in the YG compared to -0.010 Ns/y in OG. The development of sprinting ability in Japanese girls was more rapid before age 12.7 years. The difference in rate of development in sprinting ability can be primarily attributed to greater growth rates in YG, contributing to increases in the propulsive impulse during the initial acceleration phase and step length during the maximal speed phase. The limited gains in step length and the propulsive impulse in OG may reflect their reduced growth rate in height and the fact that increases in fat mass with maturation impaired relative force production.

Validity of urine specific gravity when compared with plasma osmolality as a measure of hydration status in male and female NCAA collegiate athletes. J Strength Cond Res 30(8): 2219-2225, 2016-The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of urine specific gravity (Usg) and urine osmolality (Uosm) when compared with plasma osmolality (Posm) from euhydration to 3% dehydration and then a 2-hour rehydration period in male and female collegiate athletes. Fifty-six National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) wrestlers (mean ± SEM); height 1.75 ± 0.01 m, age 19.3 ± 0.2 years, and body mass (BM) 78.1 ± 1.8 kg and 26 NCAA women's soccer athletes; height 1.64 ± 0.01 m, age 19.8 ± 0.3 years, and BM 62.2 ± 1.2 kg were evaluated. Hydration status was obtained by measuring changes in Posm, Uosm, Usg, and BM. Male and female subjects dehydrated to achieve an average BM loss of 2.9 ± 0.09% and 1.9 ± 0.03%, respectively. Using the medical diagnostic decision model, the sensitivity of Usg was high in both the hydrated and dehydrated state for males (92%) and females (80%). However, the specificity of Usg was low in both the hydrated and dehydrated states for males (10 and 6%, respectively) and females (29 and 40%, respectively). No significant correlations were found between Usg and Posm during either the hydrated or dehydrated state for males or females. Based on these results, the use of Usg as a field measure of hydration status in male and female collegiate athletes should be used with caution. Considering that athletes deal with hydration status on a regular basis, the reported low specificity of Usg suggests that athletes could be incorrectly classified leading to the unnecessary loss of competition.
