RESUMO

The problem of fungal infections in the era of COVID-19 has acquired special significance. This infection, directly or indirectly, through the use of glucocorticoids and antibiotics in its treatment, as well as poorer self-management of chronic diseases, has led to a wide spread of risk factors for fungal diseases among people who have had a novel coronavirus infection. The article presents two cases of COVID-19-associated mycosis, more related to mucormycosis, which were diagnosed by ophthalmologists in the Volgograd region. In the first case, the severe course of rhino-orbito-cerebral form of mucormycosis required a number of surgical interventions and prolonged treatment in the intensive care unit. In the second case, the patient asked for help without signs of aggravation of the general condition, but with irreversible local manifestations. In both cases, the eyeball was removed. Morphological examination revealed aseptal ribbon hyphae of different diameters, branching mainly at right angles, more typical for fungi of the Mucorales family. Due to the severe consequences of the disease, clinicians, including ophthalmologists, need to be especially alertness in patients with the described symptoms and risk factors in the post-COVID period.

RESUMO

The present paper presents data on the major clinical symptoms ofToxoplasma oculopathy in different forms of Toxoplasma infection. It also gives the results of the authors' own laboratory studies of specimens taken from individuals with pathology of the vision organ. They confirm the data available in the literature on that toxoplasmosis frequently occurs in combination with other infections, particularly with Herpes and Cytomegalovirus, Chlamydia, Ureaplasma, and Mycoplasma infections. The signs of eye lesions and a clinical case of an eleven-year-old girl diagnosed as having central recurrent multifocal exudative and hemorrhagic neurochoriorenitis of the right eye are given.

RESUMO

The authors analyze the findings of clinical and morphologic studies of the pathologic changes in fundus oculi tissues of 3 patients who died with senile macular dystrophy, examined in life time by ophthalmoscopic technique with transformed light. The sclera, vascular coating, retina, macula retinae, optic nerve region were thoroughly studied with the use of review histological, histochemical methods, selective test for amyloid, thiazine red fluorescent histochemical method, and thioflavin T fluorescence. In 2 of the 3 cases amyloid degeneration in the presence of amyloid deposits in choroid vessels, arterial plexus vessels round the optic nerve presence of amyloid deposits in choroid vessels, arterial plexus vessels round the optic nerve orifice, in Bruch's membrane and in the sclera. Retinal vessels, optic nerve and its coatings were intact. Further investigations are to follow.
