RESUMO

Left ventricular segmentation is a vital and necessary procedure for assessing cardiac systolic and diastolic function, while echocardiography is an indispensable diagnostic technique that enables cardiac functionality assessment. However, manually labeling the left ventricular region on echocardiography images is time consuming and leads to observer bias. Recent research has demonstrated that deep learning has the capability to employ the segmentation process automatically. However, on the downside, it still ignores the contribution of all semantic information through the segmentation process. This study proposes a deep neural network architecture based on BiSeNet, named Bi-DCNet. This model comprises a spatial path and a context path, with the former responsible for spatial feature (low-level) acquisition and the latter responsible for contextual semantic feature (high-level) exploitation. Moreover, it incorporates feature extraction through the integration of dilated convolutions to achieve a larger receptive field to capture multi-scale information. The EchoNet-Dynamic dataset was utilized to assess the proposed model, and this is the first bilateral-structured network implemented on this large clinical video dataset for accomplishing the segmentation of the left ventricle. As demonstrated by the experimental outcomes, our method obtained 0.9228 and 0.8576 in DSC and IoU, respectively, proving the structure's effectiveness.

RESUMO

Electron-hole recombination and the narrow-range utilization of sunlight limit the photocatalytic efficiency of titanium oxide (TiO2). We synthesized carbon dots (CDs) and modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with a flower-like mesoporous structure, i.e., porous TiO2/CDs nanoflowers. Among such hybrid particles, the CDs worked as photosensitizers for the mesoporous TiO2 and enabled the resultant TiO2/CDs nanoflowers with a wide-range light absorption. Rhodamine B (Rh-B) was employed as a model organic pollutant to investigate the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/CDs nanoflowers. The results demonstrated that the decoration of the CDs on both the TiO2 nanoflowers and the (commercially available AEROXIDE TiO2) P25 NPs enabled a significant improvement in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency compared with the pristine TiO2. The TiO2/CDs nanoflowers, with their porous structure and larger surface areas compared to P25, showed a higher efficiency to prevent local aggregation of carbon materials. All of the results revealed that the introduced CDs, with the unique mesoporous structure, large surface areas and loads of pore channels of the prepared TiO2 NPs, played important roles in the enhancement of the photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO2/CDs hybrid nanoflowers.

RESUMO

Microviscosity is a fundamental parameter in the biophysics of life science and governs numerous cellular processes. Thus, the development of real-time quantitative monitoring of microviscosity inside cells is important. The traditional probes for detecting microviscosity via time-resolved luminescence imaging (TRLI) are generally disturbed by autofluorescence or surrounding oxygen in cells. Herein, we developed loose packing nanoaggregates with aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (FKP-POA and FKP-PTA) and free from the effect of oxygen and autofluorescence for viscosity mapping via TRLI. The feasibility of FKP-PTA nanoparticles (NPs) for microviscosity mapping through TRLI was demonstrated by monitoring the variation of microviscosity inside HepG2 cancer cells, which demonstrated a value change from 14.9 cP to 216.9 cP during the apoptosis. This indicates that FKP-PTA NP can be used as a probe for cellular microviscosity mapping to help people to understand the physiologically dynamic microenvironment. The present results are expected to promote the advancement of diagnostic and therapeutic methods to cope with related diseases.

RESUMO

Focused ultrasound (FU) is in demand for clinical cancer therapy, but the possible thermal injury to the normal peripheral tissues limits the usage of the ablative FU for tumors with a large size; therefore research efforts have been made to minimize the possible side effects induced by the FU treatment. Non-ablative focused ultrasound assisted chemotherapy could open a new avenue for the development of cancer therapy technology. Here, low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) for controlled quick intracellular release of small molecules (Mw ≤ 1000 Da) without acute cell damage is demonstrated. The release is achieved by a composite poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly-(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/SiO2 microcapsules which are highly sensitive to LIFU and can be effectively broken by weak cavitation effects. Most PAH/PSS/SiO2 capsules in B50 rat neuronal cells can be ruptured and release rhodamine B (Rh-B) into the cytosol within only 30 s of 0.75 W cm-2 LIFU treatment, as demonstrated by the CLSM results. While the same LIFU treatment shows no obvious damage to cells, as proved by the live/dead experiment, showing that 90% of cells remain alive.

RESUMO

Life process is amazing, and it proceeds against the eternal law of entropy increase through molecular motion and takes energy from the environment to build high-order complexity from chaos to achieve evolution with more sophisticated architectures. Inspired from the elegance of life process and also to effectively exploit the undeveloped solid-state molecular motion, two unique chiral Au(I) complexes were elaborately developed in this study, in which their powders could realize a dramatic transformation from nonemissive isolated crystallites to emissive well-defined microcrystals under the stimulation of mechanical force. Such an unusual crystallization was presumed to be caused by molecular motions driven by the formation of strong aurophilic interactions as well as multiple C-H···F and π-π interactions. Such a prominent macroscopic off/on luminescent switching could also be achieved through extremely subtle molecular motions in the crystal state and presented a filament sliding that occurred in a layer-by-layer molecular stacking fashion with no involvement of any crystal phase transition. Additionally, it had been demonstrated that the manipulation of the solid-state molecular motions could result in the generation of circularly polarized luminescence.

RESUMO

The dynamic behavior of a macroscopic adhered hydrogel stabilized through controllable dynamic covalent interactions is reported. These interactions, involving the cross-linked formation of a hydrogel through reaction of a diacylhydrazine precursor with a tetraformyl partner, increase as a function of time. By using a contact time of 24 h and different compounds with recognized aggregation-induced emission features (AIEgens), it proves possible to create six laminated acylhydrazone hydrogels displaying different fluorescent colors. Blocks of these hydrogels are then adhered into a structure resembling a Rubik's Cube, a trademark of Rubik's Brand Limited, (RC) and allowed to anneal for 1 h. This produces a 3 × 3 × 3 block (RC) wherein the individual fluorescent gel blocks are loosely adhered to one another. As a consequence, the 1 × 3 × 3 layers making up the RC can be rotated either horizontally or vertically to produce new patterns. Ex situ modification of the RC or application of a chemical stimulus can be used to produce new color arrangements. The present RC structure highlights how the temporal features, strong versus weak adhesion, may be exploited to create smart macroscopic structures.

RESUMO

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a photophysical phenomenon correlated closely with the excited-state intramolecular motions. Although AIE has attracted increasing attention due to the significant applications in biomedical and optoelectronics, an in-depth understanding of the excited-state intramolecular motion has yet to be fully developed. Here we found the non-aromatic annulene derivative of cyclooctatetrathiophene shows typical AIE phenomenon in spite of its rotor-free structure. The underlying mechanism is investigated through photoluminescence spectra, time-resolved absorption spectra, theoretical calculations, circular dichroism as well as by pressure-dependent fluorescent spectra etc., which indicate that the aromaticity reversal from ground state to the excited state serves as a driving force for inducing the excited-state intramolecular vibration, leading to the AIE phenomenon. Therefore, aromaticity reversal is demonstrated as a reliable strategy to develop vibrational AIE systems. This work also provides a new viewpoint to understand the excited-state intramolecular motion behavior of lumiongens.

RESUMO

Constructing artificial helical structures through hierarchical self-assembly and exploring the underlying mechanism are important, and they help gain insight from the structures, processes, and functions from the biological helices and facilitate the development of material science and nanotechnology. Herein, the two enantiomers of chiral Au(I) complexes ( S)-1 and ( R)-1 were synthesized, and they exhibited impressive spontaneous hierarchical self-assembly transitions from vesicles to helical fibers. An impressive chirality inversion and amplification was accompanied by the assembly transition, as elucidated by the results of in situ and time-dependent circular dichroism spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope imaging. The two enantiomers could serve as ideal chiral templates to co-assemble with other achiral luminogens to efficiently induce the resulting co-assembly systems to show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Our work has provided a simple but efficient way to explore the sophisticated self-assembly process and presented a facile and effective strategy to fabricate architectures with CPL properties.

RESUMO

Cell-to-cell communication precisely controls the creation of new organs during reproductive growth. However, the sensor molecules that mediate developmental signals in monocot plants are poorly understood. Here, we report that DWARF AND RUNTISH SPIKELET1 (DRUS1) and DRUS2, two closely related receptor-like kinases (RLKs), redundantly control reproductive growth and development in rice (Oryza sativa). A drus1-1 drus2 double knockout mutant, but not either single mutant, showed extreme dwarfism and barren inflorescences that harbored sterile spikelets. The gibberellin pathway was not impaired in this mutant. A phenotypic comparison of mutants expressing different amounts of DRUS1 and 2 revealed that reproductive growth requires a threshold level of DRUS1/2 proteins. DRUS1 and 2 maintain cell viability by repressing protease-mediated cell degradation and likely by affecting sugar utilization or conversion. In the later stages of anther development, survival of the endothecium requires DRUS1/2, which may stimulate expression of the UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase gene UGP2 and starch biosynthesis in pollen. Unlike their Arabidopsis thaliana ortholog FERONIA, DRUS1 and 2 mediate a fundamental signaling process that is essential for cell survival and represents a novel biological function for the CrRLK1L RLK subfamily.

RESUMO

An Eu(III)-containing polymer can exhibit intense induced circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the presence of proline. In addition, the optical anisotropy factor (g(lum)) of the polymer for (5)D0 → (7)F1/(7)F2 transition was much higher than that of a single model molecule, which reveals the amplification effect of CPL arising from the conjugated polymer structure.

RESUMO

A novel polymer P-1 is prepared by the reaction of the monomer 5,5'-divinyl-2,2'-bipyridine and Salen-Zn(II) via Heck cross coupling. Interestingly, P-1 can further incorporate with Eu(TTA)(3)·2H(2)O to generate copolymer P-2 with two different metal centers. P-2 exhibits exceptional dual emissive properties which can be tuned by excitation wavelength. For example, an orange fluorescence can be obtained when P-2 is excited at 430 nm, whereas a red emission with a huge Stoke shift of 57 nm is observed when it is excited at 345 nm. The high wavelength emission can be attributed to Eu(III) ((5)D(0)→(7)F(2) ), which is lit by an effective photoinduced energy transfer process between P-1 and the Eu(TTA)(3) complex. The properties of P-2 have led to a better understanding of the energy transfer process between P-1 and Eu(TTA)(3) moieties.

RESUMO

(R,R)-Salen-based chiral polymer P-1 was synthesized by the polymerization of 5,5'-((2,5-dibutoxy-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))bis(2-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-ylmethyl) benzaldehyde (M-1) with (1R,2R)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (M-2) via nucleophilic addition- elimination reaction, and (R,R)-salan-based polymer P-2 could be obtained by the reduction reaction of P-1 with NaBH(4). (R,R)-Salen-based chiral polymer P-1 can exhibit greater fluorescence enhancement response toward (l)-α-hydroxyl carboxylic acids, and the value of enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio (ef) can reach as high as 8.41 for mandelic acid and 6.55 for lactic acid. On the contrary, (R,R)-salan-based chiral polymer P-2 shows obvious fluorescence quenching response toward α-hydroxyl carboxylic acids. Most importantly, (R,R)-salen-based polymer P-1 can display bright blue fluorescence color change in the presence of (l)-α-hydroxyl carboxylic acids under a commercially available UV lamp, which can be clearly observed by the naked eyes.

RESUMO

Two coumarin salen-based sensors CS1 and CS2 can exhibit a pronounced fluorescence enhancement response toward Mg(2+) as high as 36-fold (CS1) and 111-fold (CS2) in the presence of Na(+) as a synergic trigger. More importantly, the fluorescent color of CS1 was bright green instead of weak yellow after the addition of Mg(2+) and Na(+) together, which can be easily detected by the naked eye.

RESUMO

This paper aims to develop a data-based Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) covering both urban and rural areas in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong Province, China, for the investigation of relationships between food intake and lifestyle-related diseases among middle-aged Chinese. We recruited 417 subjects from the general population and performed an assessment of the diet, using a 3-day weighed dietary record survey. We employed contribution analysis (CA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA) to select food items covering up to a 90% contribution and a 0.90 R2, respectively. The total number of food items consumed was 523 (443 in the urban and 417 in the rural population) and the intake of 29 nutrients was calculated according to the actual consumption by foods/recipes. The CA selected 233, 194 and 183 foods/recipes for the combined, the urban and the rural areas, respectively, and then 196, 157 and 160 were chosen by the MRA. Finally, 125 foods/recipes were selected for the final questionnaire. The frequencies were classified into eight categories and standard portion sizes were also calculated. For adoption of the area-specific SQFFQ, Validity and reproducibility tests are now planned to determine how the combined SQFFQ performs in actual assessment of disease risk and benefit.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine reproducibility of assessed intake of foods and nutrients according to a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) in adult doctors and nurses residing in Chaoshan area of China. SUBJECTS: The SQFFQ was administered first in October to December of 2004 to 120 adult doctors and nurses living in Chaoshan area of China and was then re-administered to 102 three months later between January and March of 2005 (SQFFQ 1 and SQFFQ 2). METHODS: Reproducibility was evaluated in terms of consumption of 10 food groups and energy and 34 macro- and micro-nutrients based on the SQFFQ from the 102 doctors and nurses. RESULTS: For intake of foods, Pearsom's correlation coefficients (CCs) with log-transformation and energy adjustment (minimum - median - maximum) range from 0.43 (eggs) - 0.84 - 0.90 (teas). Spearman's rank CCs with energy adjustment ranged from 0.77 (cereals) - 0.84 - 0.94 (milks). Kappa statistics with energy adjustment ranged from 0.53 (vegetables) - 0.63 - 0.82 (teas). For consumption of nutrients, Pearson's correlation coefficients (CCs) with log-transformation and energy adjustment (minimum - median - maximum) range from 0.83 (docosahexaenoic acid and oryzanin) - 0.88 - 0.90 (linolenic acid, vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin E, calcium, sodium, selenium and magnesium). Spearman's rank CCs with energy adjustment ranged from 0.81 (oryzanin and vitamin C) - 0.86 - 0.90 (sodium). Kappa statistics with energy adjustment ranged from 0.49 (protein) - 0.60 - 0.77 (sodium). CONCLUSION: Substantially high reproducibility was observed; it is possible to use the tailored, relatively simple, but comprehensive, self-administered SQFFQ to facilitate assessment of the association between lifestyle and health/disease in large-scale epidemiological studies.
