RESUMO

Objective: In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as entrapped carriers and Artemisia argyi stem biochar (ABC) was used as an absorption carrier to immobilize aerobic denitrifying bacteria screened from landfill leachate, thus a new carbon-based functional microbial material (PVA/SA/ABC@BS) was successfully prepared. Methods: The structure and characteristics of the new material were revealed by using a scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the performance of the material for treating landfill leachate under different working conditions was studied. Results: ABC had abundant pore structures and that the surface contained many oxygen-containing functional groups, carboxyl groups, and amide groups, etc. and it had good absorbing performance and strong acid and alkali buffering capacity, which was beneficial to the adhesion and proliferation of microorganisms. After adding ABC as a composite carrier, the damage rate of immobilized particles was decreased by 1.2%, and the acid stability, alkaline stability, and mass transfer performance were increased by 9.00, 7.00, and 56%, respectively. When the dosage of PVA/SA/ABC@BS was 0.017g/ml, the removal rates of nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +-N) were the highest, which were 98.7 and 59.4%, respectively. When the pH values were 11, 7, 1, and 9, the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), NO3 --N, nitrite nitrogen (NO2 --N) and NH4 +-N reached the maximum values, which were 14.39, 98.38, 75.87, and 79.31%, respectively. After PVA/SA/ABC@BS was reused in 5 batches, the removal rates of NO3 --N all reached 95.50%. Conclusion: PVA, SA and ABC have excellent reusability for immobilization of microorganisms and degradation of nitrate nitrogen. This study can provide some guidance for the great application potential of immobilized gel spheres in the treatment of high concentration organic wastewater.

RESUMO

Due to the introduction of silicon carbide reinforcement, the physical and cutting properties of SiCp/Mg composites are very different from those of metal composites. Nanosecond pulse laser processing is more efficient than traditional processing for SiCp/Mg composites. A low-power pulsed fiber laser was used to etch 3.0 mm thick SiCp/Mg composites. The effect of low laser power (0~50 W) on the morphology and heat-affected zone of the SiCp/Mg composite after etching was studied. The results show that when the laser power increases, the material accumulation at the ablation end of the machining surface becomes more and more serious. With the increase in power, the differences in ablation width and ablation depth on the surface of composite materials do not increase proportionally. When the laser power increases gradually, the width of the heat-affected zone increases in the direction of the perpendicular laser beam and reaches the maximum value at the etched end.

RESUMO

Due to the inhibition of nitrification from aniline toxicity, exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) addition was attempted to enhance nitrogen removal in this work. Two sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs): S1 (the control) and S2 (C6-HSL and 3-oxo-C8-HSL dosing) were used to treat aniline wastewater. The NH4+-N and TN removal rates of S2 were 42.50% and 26.99% higher than S1 in the aerobic phase, respectively. It revealed the nitrogen removal performance of S2 much better than S1. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that many nitrifiers and denitrifiers of S2, such as Nitrosomonas and Thauera, transferred from sludge to biofilm significantly and built closer relationships each other. Overall, main nitrogen removal was contributed by biofilm rather than sludge with the regulation of AHLs. A mild and collaborative environment of biofilms for microorganisms enhanced nitrogen removal. The work provided a new idea for reconciling the contradiction between nitrification and denitrification in aniline wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Novel porous alginate-based nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by incorporating polyaniline-polypyrrole modified graphene oxide (GO@PAN-PPy) as reinforcing fillers into the alginate matrix (GO@PAN-PPy/SA) for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) removal from water. Different in-situ co-polymerization functionalized GO with Py-to-An mass ratios of monomers (from nil to 1:1) and contents of GO@PAN-PPy (from nil to 2.0%(w/v)) were embedded into the alginate backbone to improve the sorption performance. Key factors, such as pH, coexisting metal ions, and swelling states were investigated in batch adsorption modes. The synergistic effect combined from polymer backbone and fillers could lower the impact of the pH-dependent adsorption reaction. With an adsorption ability superior to that of plain SA and GO/SA, the optimized GO@PAN-PPy-2(1)/SA exhibited good experimental maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (~133.7 mg/g) and Cu(II) (~87.2 mg/g) at pH 3.0, which were better than those of many other similar sorbents. The sorbents possessed excellent adaptability for 0.2 M salt for Cr(VI) removal but poor for Cu(II) removal. Pre-swelling treatment and co-adsorption could enhance the adsorption performance. The excellent reusability of hydrogel was demonstrated after five cycles in single/binary system. Overall, this work reveals that the resultant hydrogel holds potential as candidate sorbent to remove anionic-cationic heavy metal ions from water.

RESUMO

The effects of phenol on aerobic granular sludge including extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microbial community were investigated for low strength and salinity wastewater treatment. Elevated phenol over 20 mg/L stimulated biological phosphorus removal mainly via co-metabolism with nearly complete phenol degradation, whereas resulted in significant accumulation of nitrate around 4 mg/L. Aerobic granules kept structural stability via enhancing production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially folds of polysaccharides (PS) and varying functional groups identified through EEM, FTIR and XPS spectral characterizations at increasing phenol loads. Illumina MiSeq sequencing results indicated that elevated phenol decreased the bacterial diversity and richness, and caused remarkable variations in structural and compositions of microbial population. Multiple halophilic bacteria including Stappia, Luteococcus, and Formosa laid the biological basis for stability of aerobic granules and efficient biological nutrients and phenol removal. Redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested the key role of phenol in shaping the relative abundances and predominant genera. This study proved that aerobic granular sludge was feasible for low-saline and phenol-laden low-strength wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Aerobic granular sludge as a promising technology showed great resistance to adverse conditions. However, the interaction between oxytetracycline (OTC) and granular sludge was not studied sufficiently. This study therefore investigated OTC-tolerance ability of incomplete and complete granulation sludge from aspects of simultaneous nutrients removal, sludge characteristics, microbial activity, community changes, and vice versa OTC removal performance. Incomplete granulation sludge showed better denitrification performance and resistance. Whereas, denitrification and phosphorus removal of complete granulation sludge suffered a permanent collapse under 5 mg/L OTC. OTC could be removed by rapid adsorption and slow biodegradation via granular sludge. The EPS, especially TB-PS, played a significant role during the operational period subjected to OTC. The major genera of Lysobacter and Candidatus_Competibacter laid the biological basis for stability and functionality of granules, which acted as the putative contributors for resisting and removing OTC. This study showed that incomplete-granulated sludge qualified more promising application prospect.

RESUMO

In the present work, talc (a low-cost clay) encapsulated salts alginate (TAL) beads were synthesized by cross-linking with lanthanum ion and tested for phosphate adsorption. Multiple methods were applied for the characterization of composites. The combined effect of talc and lanthanum improved phosphate removal performance of TAL beads. Factors such as talc content, La3+ concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, co-existing ions (Cl-, NO3- and SO42-) were studied in batch experiments. The optimized TAL-7 beads exhibited satisfactory selectivity towards phosphate in the coexistence of competing anions and could remain efficient phosphate removal in the pH range of 4-6. The phosphate removal efficiency reached to 95% with a maximum uptake of 16.4 mg P/g obtained at the optimal pH 4. Further experiments suggested that Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could well describe the phosphate adsorption process of TAL-7 beads. Moreover, TAL-7 beads exhibited superior phosphate fixation performance in the long-term experiment. The results from adsorption experiment and characterization analysis demonstrated that TAL-7 beads could be a cost-effective and promising biosorbent for phosphate adsorption and fixation in the aqueous environment.

RESUMO

Hypersaline wastewater may pose threats to biological wastewater treatment processes. An aerobic granular sludge-based sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performing simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) was evaluated with increased salinity from 1 to 2 % (w/v). Nitrogen removal performance was unaffected by salinity up to 20 g/L in terms of reliable and efficient nitrification and denitrification. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process was completely deteriorated at salinity up to 2 %, in contrast to excellent phosphorus removal at 1 %. Profiles of phosphorus over one cycle demonstrated that higher salinity not only inhibited anaerobic phosphorus release but also impeded aerobic/anoxic phosphorus uptake. Illumina MiSeq sequencing revealed multiple halophilic and non-halophilic bacteria within aerobic granules with family Anaerolineaceae being the predominant potential salt adapter. Besides, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) were more tolerant to salt than nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) and denitrifying PAOs (DNPAOs). These results deciphered the resilience of aerobic granular sludge-based biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes to hypersaline stress.

RESUMO

Over the last 30 years, the successful implementation of the anammox process has attracted research interest from all over the world. Various reactor configurations were investigated for the anammox process. However, the construction of the anammox process is a delicate topic in regards to the high sensitivity of the biological reaction. To better understand the effects of configurations on the anammox performance, process-kinetic models and activity kinetic models were critically overviewed, respectively. A significant difference in the denitrification capabilities was observed even with similar dominated functional species of anammox with different configurations. Although the kinetic analysis gained insight into the feasibility of both batch and continuous processes, most models were often applied to match the kinetic data in an unsuitable manner. The validity assessment illustrated that the Grau second-order model and Stover-Kincannon model were the most appropriate and shareable reactor-kinetic models for different anammox configurations. This review plays an important role in the anammox process performance assessment and augmentation of the process control.

RESUMO

Aerobic granular sludge-based simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems were configured for the treatment of low-strength municipal wastewater. Granular characteristics, process performance, and the corresponding microbial ecology dynamics were comprehensively explored with sodium acetate and succinate as mixed carbon source. Results revealed that aerobic granules kept structural and functional resilience, while mixed carbon source largely altered and balanced the growth and competition of phosphorus/glycogen accumulating organisms (PAOs/GAOs). Appropriate ratio of mixed carbon source was vital for superb physiochemical behaviors and reliable removal performance by aerobic granules. Therefore, the aerobic granular SNDPR system could achieve deep-level nutrients removal through enhancing the anaerobic carbon uptake rate and strengthening the carbon usage efficiency. The present work could add some guiding sight into the application of aerobic granular SNDPR system for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Acclimation performances and characteristics of aerobic granular sludge to salt and temperature were investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performing simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR). The aerobic granular SNDPR system was firstly subjected to low salinity (0.5%, w/v) at moderate temperature (> 15 ℃) and subsequent low temperature (< 15 ℃). The shock loading of salinity temporarily deteriorated biological phosphorus removal, while dual stresses of salinity and low temperature induced temporary inhibition on both nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Both salinity and low temperature stimulated the settleability of aerobic granules, accompanied with decreased ratios of protein to polysaccharide (PN/PS). Illumina MiSeq sequencing revealed that salinity rarely affected bacterial richness, but significantly decreased the diversity. Whereas low temperature strengthened both bacterial richness and diversity. Phyla Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and their sub-groups acted as the main halophilic bacteria while Proteobacteria was also psychrophilic. The functional bacteria such as nitrifiers, denitrifiers, and phosphorus removal bacteria exhibited greater tolerance to salt and low temperature than glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs). Overall, the present study demonstrated the resilience and robustness of aerobic granular sludge toward salinity and low temperature, which could aid the knowledge of saline wastewater treatment by aerobic granular sludge.

RESUMO

Novel biochar/pectin/alginate hydrogel beads (BPA) derived from grapefruit peel were synthesized and used for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solution. FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA and XPS, etc. were applied for characterization analysis. The synergistic reinforcing effect of polymer matrix and biochar fillers improved the adsorptive, mechanical and thermostabilized performance of BPA. Factors like component contents of biochar and pectin, pH, contact time, Cu(II) concentration and coexisting inorganic salts or organic ligands were systematically investigated in batch mode. The adsorption isotherms were fitted well by the Freundlich model and the experimental maximum adsorption capacity of optimized BPA-9 beads (mass ratio of pectin to alginate = 10:1) with 0.25% biochar, was ∼80.6 mg/g at pH 6. Kinetic process was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and film diffusion primarily governed the overall adsorption rate, followed by intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamics analysis suggested spontaneous feasibility and endothermic nature of adsorption behavior. Moreover, BPA also showed better environmental adaptability in the presence of NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, EDTA-2Na and CA as well as good adsorption potential for other heavy metal [e.g. Pb(III)]. Crucially, the BPA beads showed good regeneration ability after five cycles. All these results indicated the potential of BPA for removing heavy metal from water.

RESUMO

In this work, a pilot-scale low dissolved oxygen (DO) composite biological system (LDOCBS) composed of an anoxic rotating biological contactor (RBC) and four aeration tanks with gradient aeration was used to treat landfill leachate for 88 d. The maximum removals of 85.65%, 99.92% and 84.06% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (NH4+-N) and total nitrogen (TN) were achieved, respectively. The three-dimensional exaction and emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the biodegradability of leachate was significantly improved by the LDOCBS. Mass balance calculations showed that the COD removal and denitrification process mainly occurred in RBC while 1# contributed primarily to nitrification. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that denitrifying bacteria with highly relative abundances of 46.45%-53.81% played key roles in organic degradation and nitrogen removal. This work could add some guiding insights into the cost-efficient treatment of landfill leachate by the composite biological system.

RESUMO

The lab-scale system combined bioelectrochemical and sulfur autotrophic denitrification (CBSAD) was established to evaluate the effects of currents (50-300 mA) on both the performances and microbial communities. Results showed that the nitrate removal rate increased significantly when the current increased from 50 to 200 mA, while it slightly decreased with higher currents. Mass balance results revealed that hydrogen autotrophic denitrification contributed almost three times (70.25-78.62%) to denitrification compared with that of the sulfur part (21.38-29.75%). Illumina MiSeq sequencing showed that the currents changed the bacterial richness and diversity in this system. Phylum Firmicutes and class Clostridia predominated >50% under each condition. And multiple key bacteria capable of denitrification such as Proteiniclasticum, Thauera and Family_XI_uncultured were identified and found in higher proportions when the current was 200 mA. Therefore, this study helps revealing the mechanisms of accelerating nitrate-reduction through applied currents in the CBSAD systems.

RESUMO

Filamentous sludge bulking poses great threats to operational stability of aerobic granular sludge. Exploration of the microbial community aids knowledge of the causative factors to sludge bulking and guides directions for corresponding actions for prevention and controlling. Detailed changes of bacterial community within the non-bulking and bulking were performed and compared with a non-specific method through 1‰ (v/v) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) addition. Results revealed that non-bulking/bulking granules maintained effective carbon and nitrogen removal, while bulking completely deteriorated enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). Excess extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) especially polysaccharide (PS) were directly linked with sludge bulking and abundant PS contributed to subsequent granular re-stability. Filamentous bulking dramatically altered the bacterial populations and 1‰ H2O2 effectively controlled bulking by eliminating causative filaments Singulisphaera and Thiothrix. Together, this study provides new insights into the non-bulking/bulking granules and could direct the prevention and control of filamentous bulking in aerobic granules.

RESUMO

In this work, a novel biochar was prepared from the Artemisia argyi stem at 300 °C (AS300), 450 °C (AS450), and 600 °C (AS600). The structural properties of these biochars were characterized with various tools. The sorption kinetic processes of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) onto these biochars were better described by the pseudo-second order. The sorption isotherm processes of Cr(VI) onto these biochars were better described by the Freundlich model while the adsorption processes of Cu(II) were consistent with the Langmuir model. Batch sorption experiments showed that AS600 had the maximum adsorption capacity to Cr(VI) and Cu(II) with 161.92 and 155.96 mg/g, respectively. AS600 was selected for the follow-up batch and dynamic adsorption experiments. Results showed that AS600 had larger adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) at lower pH while the larger adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was found at higher pH. The effect of ionic strength on the adsorption of Cu(II) by AS600 was greater than that on the adsorption of Cr(VI). Dynamic adsorption experiments showed that Cu(II) had a higher affinity for the adsorption sites on the AS600 compared with Cr(VI). The adsorption mechanisms mainly involved electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, pore filling, and chemical bonding effect. Graphical abstract.

RESUMO

In order to utilize the discarded Chaenomeles sinensis seed (CSS) and develop low-cost biochar for heavy metal pollution control, this study pyrolyzed CSS to prepare biochar at three different temperatures (300, 450 and 600 °C). The physicochemical properties of CSS biochar such as elemental composition, surface area, surface morphology and surface functional groups were characterized. Its adsorption properties including kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were studied. The results showed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached at 5 h, which was relatively fast. CSS biochar prepared at 450 °C (CSS450) had the maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) and Cu(II), which was 93.19 mg/g and 105.12 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic parameter ΔG0 < 0 and the isotherm parameter RL between 0 and 1 all revealed the feasibility and spontaneity of the adsorption process. The removal of Cr(VI) exhibited high efficiency in a wide pH range (1-10), while the removal of Cu(II) was pH-dependent and optimal at pH = 6. The coexisting ions in the solution showed slight inhibition of the adsorption of Cr(VI) and Cu(II). Additionally, Cu(II) exhibited better affinity for CSS450 than Cr(VI) in dynamic adsorption. This is the first study to prepare biochar from CSS and confirms its potential application for heavy metal remediation.

RESUMO

Simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) using aerobic granules is a promising approach in water treatment. The present work investigated the effects of influent carbon to nitrogen (N) ratios (20, 10, and 4) on the SNDPR performance in aerobic granular sequencing batch reactors (AGSBR) under high aeration rate. Results revealed that granules remained long-term stability when the DO concentration was 7-8 mg/L. With the decline of COD/N ratios, the denitrification efficiency was reduced due to the accumulation of nitrate, although the removal of COD and TP remained stable with good efficiency. Rising concentration of ammonia N led to the increase of PN/PS ratio of EPS as well as the protein types according to the results of 3D-EEM fluorescence spectroscopy. MiSeq pyrosequencing technology indicated that the decreasing ratio of COD/N under high DO concentration contributed to accumulation of GAOs and DNPAOs rather than PAOs.

RESUMO

Wastewater treatment by means of algal-bacterial granules has become a hot topic worldwide recently. Rapid granulation of algal-bacterial granules was achieved in an aerobic bacterial granular sequencing batch reactor (SBR) under natural sunlight exposure. Occurrence of abundant filamentous bacteria bridging the water-born algae, and overproduction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) (especially polysaccharides (PS), tryptophan & protein-like, and humic acid-like substances) were observed on the first 3 days, while the algae grew into the inner side of the granules and mature granules were obtained on day 7. The growth of the water-born algae slightly decreased the settleability, mean sizes of the granules, but stimulated the bioactivity significantly. Whereas, the biomass retention decreased before day 3, and got stable soon with the maturation period with symbiotic growth of algal-bacterial biomass. Illumina results revealed that the introduction of algae reduced the richness and diversity of bacterial community. Besides, few changes in structure and some compositions shifts in bacterial communities were found, while the predominant algae shifted from Diatomea to green algae Chlorophyceae. The possible mechanism for natural sunlight induced granulation of algal-bacterial granules was thus proposed based on the interactions between algae and bacteria.

RESUMO

In this study, we prepared a novel hybrid functionalized chitosan-Al2O3@SiO2 composite (FCAS) for removing hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous system. Spectroscopic studies like Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS) were characterized. The effects such as dosage of adsorbent, pH, contact time and initial Cr(VI) concentration were evaluated. It has been illustrated that a wide acidic condition in the pH range of 2-6 was conducive to Cr(VI) adsorption and only 10 min was required to reach about 80% adsorption. Also, the adsorption properties of prepared adsorbent such as kinetics, thermodynamics and isotherms were comprehensively studied. Additionally, the adsorption capacity barely declined even after five cycles. Studies found that FCAS with characteristics of high performance of adsorption rate and capacity and better reusability would be a potential adsorbent for wastewater treatment.
