RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) show difficulties in attributing false beliefs, whereas they are better at attributing emotions. This study examines whether being asked about the emotion linked to a false belief, instead of explicitly about the belief, facilitates performance on theory of mind (ToM) tasks. METHOD: Thirty children with WS and 90 typically developing children, who were individually matched on mental age (50-112 months), were administered six explicit (i.e. questions on belief) and six implicit (i.e. questions on emotion) trials of false belief tasks. RESULTS: Theory of mind competences were related to cognitive development. Children with WS performed comparably to typically developing children on the emotion questions. CONCLUSION: Correct answers to questions on emotion reveal an implicit understanding of false belief. The Representational redescription process could be impaired in the domain of ToM in this population. This finding has relevant implications for the design of supports aiming to optimise the development of ToM competences in individuals with WS.

RESUMO

The ESEOO Project, launched after the Prestige crisis, has boosted operational oceanography capacities in Spain, creating new operational oceanographic services and increasing synergies between these new operational tools and already existing systems. In consequence, the present preparedness to face an oil-spill crisis is enhanced, significantly improving the operational response regarding ocean, meteorological and oil-spill monitoring and forecasting. A key aspect of this progress has been the agreement between the scientific community and the Spanish Search and Rescue Institution (SASEMAR), significantly favoured within the ESEOO framework. Important achievements of this collaboration are: (1) the design of protocols that at the crisis time provide operational state-of-the-art information, derived from both forecasting and observing systems; (2) the establishment, in case of oil-spill crisis, of a new specialized unit, named USyP, to monitor and forecast the marine oceanographic situation, providing the required met-ocean and oil-spill information for the crisis managers. The oil-spill crisis scenario simulated during the international search and rescue Exercise "Gijón-2006", organized by SASEMAR, represented an excellent opportunity to test the capabilities and the effectiveness of this USyP unit, as well as the protocols established to analyze and transfer information. The results presented in this work illustrate the effectiveness of the operational approach, and constitute an encouraging and improved base to face oil-spill crisis.

RESUMO

With the aim of evaluating tolerance to new shorter initiation schedules in subcutaneous immunotherapy everyday clinical practice, a study was carried out using Pangramin Plus with initiation periods between 3 (Cluster) and 6 (Plus) weeks. All the information was processed retrospectively and both systemic (SR) and local (LR) adverse reactions occurring between September 2002 and February 2003 were recorded. A total of 353 patients (261 Plus and 91 Cluster) were included and 2,886 doses were administered (2,166 in initiation and 720 in maintenance). Of these, 800 were with Grass mix extract, 1,141 Grass mix + Olea, 273 Olea, 73 Dermatophagoides mix and 599 Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. As regards adverse reactions (AR), 2.8% of patients showed SR and 4.8% LR, 1.2% of doses caused some type of reaction (SR and LR in 0.3% and 0.9%, respectively). The initiation schedule, first dose or allergens resulted in no significant differences in the frequency of adverse reactions. The Grass mix extract showed the highest frequency of AR. Sixty-seven percent of SR and 68% of LR were delayed. 64% of these reactions resolved spontaneously while the rest responded favourably to treatment. Adrenaline was administered on one occasion for immediate asthma. There were no cases of anaphylactic shock, hospitalisation or life-threatening situations. Pangramin Plus tolerance, therefore, can be classified as good, similar to conventional schedules, but with the benefits of shorter initiation schedules.

RESUMO

Computer-averaged auditory evoked potentials were found to be abnormal in infants hospitalized because of severe malnutrition (marasmus). They improved as the infants' somatic growth improved during the course of treatment, but were still deviant at the time of discharge from the hospital and at subsequent outpatient follow-up. Abnormalities in evoked potentials may reflect a long-lasting effect of malnutrition on brain function.
