RESUMO

The West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus is threatened with extinction in Brazil, and this study focused on nondestructive blood samples analyzed for metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), as well as biochemical and hematological biomarkers. Studied manatees were kept at Projeto Peixe-Boi headquarters in Pernambuco State, and at two natural areas in estuaries where they are released to the wild. Manatees kept at the natural estuary in Paraiba State have blood concentrations of Al, Pb, Cd, Sn that are 11, 7, 8 and 23 times greater, respectively, than the concentrations found in blood of animals from the same species in Florida, USA. An inhibition of butyrylcholinesterase in manatees kept at the two reintroduction sites in Alagoas and Paraiba States indicated possible exposure of the animals to cholinesterase inhibitor insecticides. PCBs and OCPs were not detected. Results from this study will help delineate conservation efforts in the region.

Patterned string tasks are a test of perceptual capacity and the understanding of means-end connections. Primates can solve complex forms of this task in laboratories. However, this may not indicate the level of such cognition that is commonly employed in the wild, where decision-making time is often short and distractions such as predator avoidance and competition between conspecifics are often prevalent. The current study tests whether wild common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) can successfully complete the simplest form of the patterned string task, parallel strings, while in their natural environment. Although 12 out of 13 marmosets could successfully complete the task, in previous laboratory-based studies on primates, the errors at this task by all primate species tested were consistently lower than in the present study. This is probably explained by the added difficulties imposed by the natural setting of the task in the present study, exemplified by a significant increase in observed vigilance behaviour by subject animals prior to attempts at the task that were unsuccessful. The undertaking of such tasks by common marmosets in situ probably provides a more reasonable representation of the levels of cognitive capacity expressed by this species in the wild than do laboratory-based studies of the task.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a formula containing n-6 and n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCP) from purified phospholipids increases the content of 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 of plasma lipids and modifies the plasma antioxidant capacity in low-birth-weight infants. STUDY DESIGN: Seventeen infants were fed a conventional formula for low birth-weight infants (F), and 17 a formula containing n-6 and n-3 LCP from purified pig-brain phospholipids (LCP-F). Fourteen infants receiving human milk from a human milk bank were used as a reference (HM). Growth index were measured and blood samples were taken at entry and after 15 days and 30 days of feeding. RESULTS: In infants fed LCP-F the levels of 22:6n-3 in total plasma lipids and in plasma phospholipids and triglycerides were higher than in infants fed F and closer to the levels of HM group throughout the study. Docosahexaenoic acid concentration in total plasma lipids was 3.46+/-0.19 mg/dl in infants fed LCP-F and 2.08+/-0.20 in infants fed F after 15 days of feeding (P<0.001), and 3.83+/-0.30 and 2.15+/-0.20 in infants fed LCP-F and F respectively, after 30 days of feeding (P<0.001). The concentration of 20:4n-6 in the LCP-F was significantly higher than in the F group at 15 and 30 days of feeding. Plasma antioxidant capacity did not differ significantly between the study groups. CONCLUSION: Feeding low birth-weight infants a formula containing LCP phospholipids results in an increase of n-3 and n-6 LCP in plasma towards that of infants fed human milk.
