RESUMO

Salmonella has long been linked to zoonotic risks, including exotic pets. Parrots are popular pets, and we here describe a salmonellosis outbreak involving Blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva) confiscated from the illegal pet trade in Brazil. High mortality was observed during the rehabilitation for which the causative agent was identified by cultures, and VITEK®2 GN identification card as Salmonella enterica. Genome sequencing of two isolates revealed serovar Newport ST45. The isolates were resistant to aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones, and genomic analyses detected characteristic Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands (SPIs) and virulence factors. A phylogenetic analysis with other 275 S. Newport ST45 from different international sources showed clustering with poultry and vegetables isolates and closely related clades of intermingled animal, human, food/environmental isolates from different countries (Tables S1 and S2). The virulent profiles and phylogenetic connection to multiple sources bring the attention to the non-host specificity of these strains highlighting the zoonotic potential in the illegal wildlife trade for companion animals.

RESUMO

Anatomy is traditionally regarded as a difficult, non-motivating course involving a large body of theoretical and practical content, and it is often associated with high levels of dropout and failure. Given the relevance of the topic, we propose an alternative active multisensory teaching tool consisting of the construction of a low-fidelity anatomical model assembled into an articulated equine skeleton. Model construction and assembly assists students in the recognition of the topography and anatomical boundaries of the equine abdominal digestive system. Digestive system organs (liver, pancreas, stomach, small and large intestines) were constructed using common, easily available materials, such as newspaper, balloons, laminated rubber sheets, and polyethylene cylinders. The method described in this study is a low-cost, user-friendly teaching tool that is potentially applicable across different academic disciplines and that can also be used to construct models of other systems and species. However, it should be combined with other anatomy teaching methods because it does not provide detailed representation of specific digestive system organ features.

Foram avaliados, por meio da tomografia computadorizada, 19 cães com mastocitomas tratados com quimioterapia. Aspectos como contorno, atenuação, realce pós-contraste e presença de clivagem com estruturas adjacentes foram avaliados. Aplicaram-se os critérios RECIST e a mensuração volumétrica das lesões para se avaliar a resposta ao tratamento. Quanto à atenuação, os mastocitomas se mostraram como lesões homogêneas ou heterogêneas, com tendência a limites definidos e contornos regulares e apresentaram realce moderado após administração do contraste iodado intravenoso. Os métodos RECIST e a mensuração volumétrica apresentaram uma excelente concordância na classificação da resposta terapêutica, fornecendo um bom parâmetro da resposta ao tratamento instituído. O exame de tomografia computadorizada se mostrou útil na delimitação do tumor e importante ferramenta no planejamento das margens cirúrgicas.


Nineteen dogs with mast cell tumors treated with chemotherapy were evaluated by computed tomography (CT). Were evaluated aspects related to contours, attenuation, post-contrast enhancement and presence of cleavage with adjacent structures. The RECIST criteria and volumetric measurement of lesions were performed to assess the response to treatment. The mast cell tumors presented a homogeneous or heterogeneous attenuation, presented more frequently a well delineated and regular contours and moderate enhancement after intravenous administration of the iodinated contrast media. The methods RECIST and volumetric measurements showed an excellent agreement to the classification of therapeutic response, providing a good parameter of the response to treatment. The CT examination proved to be useful in the delimitation of the tumor and an important tool for planning of surgical margins.

RESUMO

The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of three dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans, (-)-hinokinin (2), (-)-6,6'-dinitrohinokinin (3), and (-)-6,6'-diaminohinokinin (4), obtained by partial synthesis from (-)-cubebin (1), were investigated using different animal models. It was observed that compounds (1) and (2) inhibited the edema formation in the rat paw edema assay at the same level and that all responses were dose dependent. Also, at the dose of 30 mg/kg, compounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 inhibited the edema formation by 53%, 63%, 54%, and 82%, respectively, at the third hour of the experiment. In the acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice, compounds 2 and 4 produced inhibition levels of 97% and 92%, respectively, while 3 displayed lower effect (75%), which was still higher than 1. The assayed compounds neither displayed activity in the cell migration test nor in the hot plate test.

Five (-)-cubebin derivative compounds, (-)-O-acetyl cubebin (3), (-)-O-benzyl cubebin (4), (-)-O-(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl)-cubebin (5), (-)-hinokinin (6) and (-)-6,6'-dinitrohinokinin (7), previously synthesised by our research group, were evaluated on in vitro assay against free amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, the asogic agent of Chagas' disease. It was observed that 6 was the most active compound (IC(50)=0.7 microM), and that 4 and 5 displayed moderate activity against the parasite, giving IC(50) values of 5.7 and 4.7 microM, respectively. In contrast, it was observed that compound 3 was inactive and that 7 displayed low activity with IC(50) values of congruent with 1.5 x 10(4) and 95.3 microM, respectively.
