RESUMO

PIP: This study investigates the effect of either sequential oral contraception (OC) or combined OC on vaginal moniliasis. The reported incidence of Candida Albicans for gynecologic patients ranges from 8.08% to 61.7%; the incidence can be as high as 66.7% in pregnant patients. The study investigated a total of 257 patients; 59 received a combination regimen, and 198 received the sequential regimen for a minimum of 8 cycles. Vaginal cultures were taken before therapy, every 3 months if positive, and at termination of the study. 22 patients on the combination regimen became culture positive on therapy, as opposed to only 14 patients on the sequential regimen. These results show that the probability of a patient having vaginal moniliasis is less while using a sequential regimen for ovulation inhibition, and are consistent with reports now appearing which suggest a high incidence of moniliasis following combination regimens.^ieng
