RESUMO

A detailed mapping of volcanic ballistic projectiles emplaced in a defined area, represents the starting point to derive preparatory data in hazard and risk studies of ballistics phenomena. Considering as case study the 3rd July 2019 paroxysmal eruption occurred at Stromboli volcano, we map and analyse at very high spatial resolution (8 cm) the distribution of the ballistic spatter clasts emplaced on the E flank of the volcano. The resulting map identifies and reproduces as geospatial polygon elements 152,228 spatter clasts with areal dimensions from 0.03 to 4.23 m2. Dispersed on 0.407 km2, the spatters cover an area of 29,000 m2 corresponding to an erupted products volume from 2.3 to 7.0 × 103 m3, calculated here for the first time. Spatial analyses indicate that the area mostly affected by the clasts emplacement is between N67.5 and N135 directions, identifying a preferential deposition between N112.50 and N123.75 directions. The clasts size distribution rapidly decreases with the size increase, highlighting a nearly constant ratio small/large clasts regardless the distance from the vent. Finally, additional investigations reveal that clasts dispersion parameters decrease progressively with the distance from the vent only along one direction (N67.5), highlighting how the morphology influences the deposition and remobilisation of mapped ballistics.

RESUMO

A study investigating the causes of rash diseases using systematic laboratory testing was conducted in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, between January 1994 to April 1998. Sera from 327 patients were tested for evidence of anti-rubella virus, measles virus, human parvovirus B19 and dengue fever virus specific immunoglobulin IgM and anti-human herpes virus type 6 (HHV-6) IgG antibodies. A laboratory confirmed diagnosis was achieved in 71.3% of the cases investigated: dengue fever (33.0%), rubella (20.2%), parvovirus B19 (9.2%), measles (6.7%) and HHV-6 (2.1%). No diagnosis was established for 94 cases (28.7%). An outbreak of measles was detected during 1997, with a peak in September and October. All of the diseases studied here presented with clinical features similar to measles and classical symptoms were found in all measles confirmed cases. The large overlap of combinations of signs and symptoms seen in this study highlights the difficulties of diagnosing a rash illness on clinical grounds alone.

RESUMO

Limb threatening ischemia is an acute step in the chronic course of peripheral arterial obstructive disease that requires some form of intervention. The objective of this study is to prove that reconstructive surgery as well as non reconstructive approaches are associated with positive results. Ours is a retrospective analysis of a ten year experience in the treatment of limb threatening ischemia. In the period 1983-93, 139 patients under-went 164 procedures. 67% of patients were diabetics. Early in the observation period the therapeutic strategy was non reconstructive, the procedure of choice was sympathectomy. Later vascular reconstructions have been recognized as the procedures of choice. In the cases not amenable to reconstructive procedures according to our group criteria (absence of a tibial vessel in continuity with a patent pedal arch), we have employed procedures such as prostanoid infusion; thrombolysis and epidural spinal cord stimulation. Reconstructive procedures have been associated with a decrease in the number of major amputations. Alternative procedures, employed in patients not amenable to reconstruction have proven worthwhile in terms of limb salvage even if this trend is limited to a short period of observation.
