RESUMO

Currently, there is no information on the combined effect of body mass index (BMI), age, gender, main spinal-pelvic parameters and parameters of adjacent functional spinal unit (FSU) degeneration according to magnetic resonance imaging on development of adjacent segment degenerative disease (ASDd). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of preoperative biometric and instrumental parameters of adjacent FSU on the risk of ASDd after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and determine personalized neurosurgical approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients after single-level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (group I, n=54), single-level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and interspinous stabilization of adjacent level (group II, n=55), preventive rigid fusion of adjacent segment (group III, n=56). Preoperative parameters and long-term clinical outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: Paired correlation analysis established the main predictors of ASDd. Regression analysis determined absolute values of these predictors for each type of surgical intervention. CONCLUSION: Surgical intervention at the level of asymptomatic proximal adjacent segment is recommended as interspinous stabilization for moderate degenerative lesions, BMI <25 kg/m2, difference between pelvic index and lumbar lordosis 10.5-15°, segmental lordosis 6.5-10.5°. In case of severe degenerative lesions, BMI 25.1-31.1 kg/m2, significant deviations of spinal-pelvic parameters (segmental lordosis 5.5-10.5°, difference between pelvic index and lumbar lordosis 15.2-20°), preventive rigid stabilization is indicated.

RESUMO

Biometric studies of the aorta, endocrine glands (testes, prostate, and thyroid), and x-ray examination of the hands from 427 corpses of men and women aged 17-89 years helped formulate equations of paired and multiple linear regression for the diagnosis of age. The difference between biological and passport age is significant if the diagnosis is made on the basis of a single object or single sign. Complex use of several objects described by many signs is recommended; in this case the confidence intervals is no more than +/- 4.09 years.

RESUMO

The problem of assessing the age of unidentified corpses remains a pressing one. Relevant published data is reviewed in brief. This study was aimed at assessing the possibility of using quantitative morphometric parameters of thyroid involution for forensic medical evaluation. The method of using these parameters and their mathematical processing is described. An optimal model is selected for assessing the biological age from two parameters, the percentage and diameter of follicles; this model permits the diagnosis of age with an accuracy of 88%.

RESUMO

Behaviour of radionuclides with different distribution types in the organism of animals of various ages was studied. Depending on the age of experimental animals, an essential difference in biokinetic parameters such as coefficients of absorbtion from gastro-intestinal tract, distribution and retention levels in critical organs, retention and excretion rates of radionuclides was found.

RESUMO

244 patients with ischemia of the lower limbs were treated surgically in the specialized cardiovascular center. No lethal outcomes were reported because previously derived algorithm of detecting silent myocardial ischemia in patients with intermittent claudication and load tests (bicycle ergometry and drug stress tests) had allowed the surgeons to ascertain the extent of coronary damage and detect subclinical cardiac failure. Valid assessment of cardiac factors enabled the right choice between surgical and therapeutic methods and staging of the procedures.

RESUMO

The authors provide the data obtained in experimental animals, pertaining to the influence of certain modifying factors on metabolism and biological effects induced by radioactive isotopes of iodine, by transuranium elements and beryllium. Out of all the modifying factors investigated, the form of the introduced compound and age turned out the most significant ones.
