RESUMO

A pillar of Mississippi's argument in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health was that there is no evidence of "societal reliance" on abortion, meaning no reason to believe that access to abortion impacts the ability of women to participate in the economic and social life of the nation. Led by economist Caitlin Myers and attorney Anjali Srinivasan, more than 150 economists filed an amicus brief seeking to assist the Court in understanding that this assertion is erroneous. The economists describe developments in causal inference methodologies over the last three decades, and the ways in which these tools have been used to isolate the measure of the effects of abortion legalization in the 1970s and of abortion policies and access over the ensuing decades. The economists argue that there is a substantial body of well-developed and credible research that shows that abortion access has had and continues to have a significant effect on birth rates as well as broad downstream social and economic effects, including on women's educational attainment and job opportunities. What follows is a reprint of this brief.

Human cortical expansion has occurred non-uniformly across the brain. We assessed the genetic architecture of cortical global expansion and regionalization by comparing two sets of genome-wide association studies of 24 cortical regions with and without adjustment for global measures (i.e., total surface area, mean cortical thickness) using a genetically informed parcellation in 32,488 adults. We found 393 and 756 significant loci with and without adjusting for globals, respectively, where 8% and 45% loci were associated with more than one region. Results from analyses without adjustment for globals recovered loci associated with global measures. Genetic factors that contribute to total surface area of the cortex particularly expand anterior/frontal regions, whereas those contributing to thicker cortex predominantly increase dorsal/frontal-parietal thickness. Interactome-based analyses revealed significant genetic overlap of global and dorsolateral prefrontal modules, enriched for neurodevelopmental and immune system pathways. Consideration of global measures is important in understanding the genetic variants underlying cortical morphology.

Oligosaccharyltransferase (OST) catalyzes the en bloc transfer of dolichylpyrophosphate oligosaccharides to an asparagine residue found in the sequon Asn-Xaa-Thr/Ser of newly synthesized proteins. Currently the method most commonly used to monitor this reaction, involving multiple solvent extractions and HPLC, is extremely time consuming and tedious. Herein, we present the use of a biotinylated peptide as the acceptor substrate and dolichylpyrophosphate [3H]chitobiose as the donor substrate for the OST-catalyzed reaction. This allows for separation (avidin-agarose beads) and quantitative analysis (scintillation counting) of only the biotinylated glycopeptide product of the OST-catalyzed reaction. This new assay yields highly reproducible results in a rapid manner.
