PURPOSE: This study aimed to provide a reliable and valid translation of the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22r) questionnaire, compare it with the EQ-5D-5 L questionnaire, and analyse health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) in Slovenia in order to potentially improve their rehabilitation processes. METHODS: A matched-case-control study was performed to assess internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, concurrent validity, and discriminative validity. The questionnaire was returned by 25 adolescent IS patients, 25 adult IS patients, and 25 healthy controls (87%, 71%, and 100% response rate, respectively). RESULTS: Internal consistency was high for all four scales in the adult IS group, but lower among the adolescent patients. Test-retest reliability of the SRS-22r was high to very high in both patient groups. Correlations between SRS-22r and EQ-5D-5 L were low or close to zero among adolescent patients and moderate or high among adult IS patients. SRS-22r domain scores were statistically significantly different between adult patients and healthy controls. CONCLUSION: The study proved that the Slovenian version of SRS-22r has the psychometric properties needed to measure HRQoL, whereby it appears to be more reliable for adults than adolescents. When used with IS adolescents, SRS-22r is affected by a severe ceiling effect. It could be used for longitudinal follow-up of adult patients after rehabilitation treatment. Additionally, some important issues that adolescents and adults with IS are faced with were identified.

The Halliwick concept is widely used in different settings to promote joyful movement in water and swimming. To assess the swimming skills and progression of an individual swimmer, a valid and reliable measure should be used. The Halliwick-concept-based Swimming with Independent Measure (SWIM) was introduced for this purpose. We aimed to determine its content validity and inter-rater reliability. Fifty-four healthy children, 3.5-11 years old, from a mainstream swimming program participated in a content validity study. They were evaluated with SWIM and the national evaluation system of swimming abilities (classifying children into seven categories). To study the inter-rater reliability of SWIM, we included 37 children and youth from a Halliwick swimming program, aged 7-22 years, who were evaluated by two Halliwick instructors independently. The average SWIM score differed between national evaluation system categories and followed the expected order (P<0.001), whereby a ceiling effect was observed in the higher categories. High inter-rater reliability was found for all 11 SWIM items. The lowest reliability was observed for item G (sagittal rotation), although the estimates were still above 0.9. As expected, the highest reliability was observed for the total score (intraclass correlation 0.996). The validity of SWIM with respect to the national evaluation system of swimming abilities is high until the point where a swimmer is well adapted to water and already able to learn some swimming techniques. The inter-rater reliability of SWIM is very high; thus, we believe that SWIM can be used in further research and practice to follow the progress of swimmers.

In the process of developmental (re)habilitation, determination of the functional abilities of an individual is an important step. For that we need appropriate measurement instruments. Because we do not have such measurement instruments in Slovenia, we chose the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI), translated it, and applied it in daily practice to assess its usefulness and applicability. The purpose of the study was to find out whether the functional abilities of the population of Slovene children evaluated with the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory is comparable to the American normative data. We also wanted to assess the possible influence of gender, parent education, community size, and the presence of siblings on children's functional abilities. The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory was administered in the form of a structured interview to the parents of 147 healthy children in three age groups (0.5-1 year, 3-3.5 years, and 5-5.5 years) in different health care centers in Slovenia. Data analysis showed significant differences in functional skills and caregiver assistance scale scores when comparing the Slovene sample with the American normative data, particularly in the youngest age group. Slovene children were found consistently to be different (scoring either higher or lower) from American children at comparable ages in several functional skills and caregiver assistance scales. The analysis also confirmed the importance of gender and the presence of siblings for gaining higher scores on some of the functional skills and caregiver assistance scales. The level of parent education did not prove to have a significant impact on the results. Our results suggest that the American normative data are not completely appropriate for reference purposes in Slovenia. The results are in agreement with the findings of other studies, demonstrating the importance of ascertaining intercultural differences. We believe that adaptation and norming of the Slovene version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory are necessary before using the instrument in clinical practice in our country.
