RESUMO

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 is attributed to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This viral disease is rapidly spreading across the globe, including India. The mainstay in managing the disease is supportive care, nutrition, and preventing further progression in the absence of proven antiviral drugs. Currently two vaccines Covishield and Covaxin are administered in India. Long-term plans of developing most reliable mRNA-based vaccines are also underway for the future method of prophylaxis. The Siddha system of medicine's holistic approach emphasizes lifestyle modification, prophylactic interventions, and dietary management to boost the host immunity and treatment with herbal medicines and higher-order medicines as the case may be. In this review, a brief outline of the disease COVID-19, Coronavirus, evidence-based traditional Siddha interventions for respiratory ailments and immune boosters highlighting the relevant published research on individual herbs are dealt, which pave way for further research on drug repurposing for COVID-19. Historical evidence on the prevention and treatment of infections especially antivirals in Siddha classics is studied.

RESUMO

In this present study, isolation, characterization and protective effect of sulfated polysaccharide (SP) isolated from the brown algae Padina gymnospora was investigated. SP was isolated and characterized through FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA, GC-MS and CHN analysis. The molecular weight of SP was found to be 16 kDa. The isolated SP contains 29.4 ±â€¯0.35% of sulfate, 27 ±â€¯0.11% of fucose, 0.05 ±â€¯0.12% of protein, respectively. Furthermore, SP exhibits its excellent radical scavenging effects were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging and reducing power assays. Moreover, pretreatment with SP significantly mitigates H2O2 induced cytotoxicity in L-929 cells in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, SP pretreatment ameliorates oxidative stress induced apoptosis and DNA damage, alleviates the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and restores mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in L-929 cells through its antioxidant potential. Together, these results suggest that SP can be exploited as a natural antioxidant in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

RESUMO

The pathogenicity of "Vibriosis" in shrimps imposes prominent menace to the sustainable growth of mariculture economy. Often the disease outbreak is associated speciously with Vibrio harveyi and its closely related species. The present study investigated the complete genome of the strain V. harveyi RT-6 to explore the molecular mechanism of pathogenesis. The genome of V. harveyi possesses a single chromosome of 6,374,398 bp in size, G + C content (44.7%) and 5730 protein coding genes. The reads of 1.3 Gb were retained from Illumina Hiseq 2500 sequencing method, assembled into 5912 predicted genes, 114 tRNAs genes, and 11 rRNAs genes. Unigenes were annotated by matching against Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins (COG)-5730, Gene ontology (GO)-1088, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases-3401. Furthermore, 13 insertion sequences-(IS), virulence factors and prophage regions were also identified. A total of 94 pathogenic genes and 36 virulence factor genes were mainly identified using Virulence Factors Database (VFDB). Out of the 36 virulence factors, 23 genes responsible for encoding flagella-based motility protein were exclusively predicted to take part in pathogenic mechanism. The Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) of the strain RT-6 (accession number: SRR5410471) highlighted the underlying genes and specifically accountable functional genes that were responsible for pathogenic infections in shrimps.

RESUMO

Functionalized metal nanoparticles are unique in nature and are being developed for its specificity in drug targeting. In the present study, aqueous extract of Sargassum myriocystum is used for the biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by the reduction of chloroauric acid. The formation of nanoparticles reaction was complete within 15 min at 76 °C. The size, shape and elemental analysis of AuNPs were carried out using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, FT-IR, TEM, SEM-EDAX, and XRD analysis. The newly formed AuNPs are stable, well-defined, polydispersed (triangular and spherical) and crystalline with an average size of 15 nm. The biomolecule involved in stabilizing AuNPs was identified using GC-MS.
