RESUMO

The authors present the case of a 21-year-old female in who, during the course of cholesteatoma, extracranial complications occurred twice in the form of Bezold's abscess. This type of the complication of otitis media occurs extremely rare. Medical literature has recorded about 20 cases of such complications. Due to commonly applied antibiotic therapies, extracranial and intracranial complications are rarely recorded in the course of otitis media, their mortality rate, however, amounts to a dozen or so per cent. The paper presents the way in witch the infection of otitis media spreads towards the neck. The authors stress the significance of computer tomography in diagnostic. Radical mastoidectomy and exploration of the neck were performed on the patient. Antibiotic regimens were based on antimicrobial sensitivity patterns. Presently, the patients is under constant laryngologist observation.

RESUMO

The paper outlines the beginnings of the process of naming laryngological diseases in the Polish language, and is based on 15th and 16th century relics of the Polish language. The authors relied in their analysis on the registers, as well as practical health guides such as herbarium books and strictly scientific medical manuals. Most of old Polish names of illnesses include original names based on the observation of the symptoms of illnesses and their clinical aspects. A great number of synonyms, both native and derived from foreign words, deserve special attention, indicating that attempts must have been made to find appropriate terms, which would best express the characteristics of a given illness. The presence of names derived from Latin and Greek should be attributed to the attempts at unifying medical terminology. Over the centuries, as the language and medical science have developed, names of illnesses have undergone a number of changes. It should be noted that numerous names derived from old Polish are still applied as medical terms.

RESUMO

The case of a 43-year old female with neck tumor is presented. Sections of the tumor revealed a poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm. A panel of immunohistochemical reactions was performed, and diagnosis of malignancy, most likely of a non-epithelial origin was given. Clinically, the tumor was characterized by a very high growth rate. An attempt at chemotherapy was made, but the patient died two months after the onset of the disease. At autopsy the tumor was extensively sampled. The histology revealed an anaplastic, sarcomatoid component, as well as a Hürthle cell carcinoma. The presented case is an excellent illustration of diagnostic difficulties that may be encountered in differential diagnosis of anaplastic, sarcomatoid thyroid carcinomas and true sarcomas.

RESUMO

The paper analyses medical expressions which are refered to as professional terms. The lexical data were collected during performing orbitotomy. The authors confirm the necessity and usefulness of the application by medical staff of brief statements, usually confined to one word or phrase which conveys the main meaning.
