RESUMO

Jewish doctrine proscribes the taking of one's life, an admonishment which is apparently adhered to in the USA. A significant negative correlation (-.26) was found between 50 states' proportionate Jewish population and their suicide rates.

RESUMO

Gender and differences in self-disclosure following a frustrating event were investigated. The Emotional Self-Disclosure Scale assessed the extent to which 100 male college students and 100 female college students were willing to disclose their emotions. The frustrating stimulus presented was a tape of an infant crying, played at 85 dB for 10 min. Men exposed to the noxious stimulus were less willing to disclose than men who were not. All of the men were less willing than the women to disclose in either condition. Women in the two conditions showed no differences in disclosure. These findings are interpreted with respect to how disclosure is affected by the immediate environment and with respect to male-female differences.

RESUMO

Gangrene of the stomach is a rare, often fatal disease which may be due to vascular, chemical, mechanical, or infectious etiologies. The infectious type, acute necrotizing gastritis, is thought to be a variant of phlegmonous gastritis, which has been associated with recent large intake of alcohol, "gastritis," and upper respiratory tract infections. Our patient, who had a history of peptic ulcer disease and gastric outlet obstruction, presented with abdominal pain, hypotension, and pneumomediastinum.

RESUMO

A case of severe hypertension during labor after Naloxone injection is described in a patient with previous mild hypertension. The interaction of andogenous opioids and opiate antagonists, and their role in the control of blood pressure is discussed. Opiate antagonists should be given with caution to obstetric patients with mild to moderate hypertension.

RESUMO

The incidence of motor vehicle accidents resulting in trauma in pregnant women is increasing. The best chance for fetal survival is to ensure maternal survival, so awareness of the types of injuries and their presentation after vehicular trauma is of the utmost importance. An algorithm for the approach to diagnosis and fetal therapy based upon obstetrics and trauma care parameters is hereby presented to the trauma team.

RESUMO

Current knowledge on biophysical and physical nature of electrocardiograms does not permit to apply analytical information-extraction techniques. This paper proposes to replace the investigation of ECG's, comprising some variations of instantaneous values, by the investigation of their distributive laws (i. e. by the investigation of the rate of occurrence of instantaneous biopotential values). The essence of the technique is the introduction into the computer's memory of some biopotentials, heart-generatet during an arbitrary chosen time-interval. By programming of into the memory introduced digit mass histograms were constructed. The experience has shown that the type-printed histograms after processing of introduced into the computer's memory hearts biopotenials, differ one from another depending on the functional state of the myocardium.

RESUMO

The effect of fasting on the rate of disappearance from plasma of bromsulphthalein (BSP) and dibromsulphthalein (DBSP), the hepatic content of BSP, and the concentration of ligandin and Z protein, two hepatic organic anion-binding proteins, was studied in the rat. Fasting for 48 h decreased the plasma disappearance of BSP and DBSP and the hepatic content of BSP as well as the amount of ligandin and Z protein. Phenobarbital given prior to fasting partially prevented these changes. A method of quantitation of Z by radioimmunoassay is described. Discrepancies in Z quantiation by dye binding and immunological methods in fasted but not control rats suggest the presence of competitors for organic anion binding to Z in fasting as well as after phenobarbital administration. Results of studies of ligandin turnover during fasting suggest decreased synthesis and increased degradation of the protein. Similar events may be of pathogenetic importance in nonhemolytic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia observed during fasting in man, horses, and other animals.
