OBJECTIVE: Relevant implicit markers of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) have only been studied in isolation with mixed evidence. This is the first study that investigated a suicide attentional bias, a death-identity bias and a deficit in behavioral impulsivity in a high-risk sample and healthy controls. METHOD: We administered the Death Implicit Association Test, the Modified Suicide Stroop Task, and a Go/No-Go Task to inpatient suicide ideators (n = 42), suicide attempters (n = 40), and community controls (n = 61). RESULTS: Suicide ideators and attempters showed a suicide attentional bias and a death-identity bias compared to healthy controls. Ideators and attempters did not differ in these implicit information-processing biases. Notably, only attempters were more behaviorally impulsive compared to controls; however, ideators and attempters did not significantly differ in behavioral impulsivity. Moreover, implicit scores were positively intercorrelated in the total sample. CONCLUSION: In line with the Cognitive Model of Suicide, ideators and attempters display suicide-related information processing biases, which can be considered as implicit cognitive markers of suicide vulnerability. Furthermore, attempters have elevated levels of behavioral impulsiveness. These results are highly relevant in the context of crisis intervention strategies and warrant further research.

The Cognitive Model of Suicide proposes a suicide attentional bias in individuals with suicidal thoughts and behavior (STBs). The Suicide Stroop Task (SST) was developed as a behavioral measure to assess this attentional bias. However, prior studies demonstrated poor psychometric properties of the SST. Methods: We developed a modified Suicide Stroop Task (M-SST) and tested its psychometric properties in a sample of healthy controls (n = 30) and inpatients with STBs (n = 24). Participants (50% female, aged 18 to 61 years) completed the M-SST with neutral, positive, negative, suicide-related positive and suicide-related negative words. Interference scores were calculated by subtracting the mean reaction time (mean RT) of the neutral words from the mean RT of the suicide-related positive words (mean RTSuicide-Positive-mean RTNeutral) and suicide-related negative words (mean RTSuicide-Negative-mean RTNeutral), resulting in two suicide-specific interference scores. Similarly, interference scores were calculated for the positive and negative words by subtracting the mean RT of neutral words from the mean RT of positive and negative words. Results: When analyzed separately, patients with STBs showed greater interferences for suicide-related positive words (p = 0.039), and for suicide-related negative words (p = 0.016), however, we found no group differences in interference scores for positive and negative words, suggesting a suicide attentional bias in patients with STBs. Controlling for the repeated measure design, a repeated measure ANOVA failed to detect a significant group × interference interaction effect (p = 0.176), which limits the generalizability of the findings. However, the interference score of suicide-related negative words showed an adequate classification accuracy (AUC = 0.72, 95% CI [0.58-0.86], p = 0.006) for differentiating between healthy controls and patients with STBs. Moreover, the interference scores showed acceptable internal reliability for the total sample and only suicide-related interference scores were correlated with clinical characteristics, thus demonstrating convergent validity. Conclusion: The results provide preliminary evidence for a suicide attentional bias in individuals with STBs compared to healthy controls. The M-SST represents a promising tool for assessing a suicide attentional bias by revealing adequate psychometric properties. Future studies with larger samples are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Worldwide, there is an increasing demand for assistive technologies (ATs) that can support people to live independently for longer. Health-care professionals (HCPs) often recommend AT devices, however there exists a lack of availability of devices and appropriate training in the field. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available evidence into the experiences and training needs of HCPs in relation to AT. Six electronic databases were searched without date restrictions: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SPP, SSCI, CINAHL, and ASSIA. Journal handsearching, searching reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews, and contacting experts in the field of AT were also conducted. Findings were analyzed using narrative synthesis. Data from 7846 participants from 62 studies were synthesized, eliciting perceived challenges in access to and provision of training, resulting in knowledge gaps across disciplines and geographic locations. Mechanisms to mitigate these issues included ongoing support following training and tailoring education to meet individual needs since comprehensive training is essential to maintain and improve competence, knowledge, and confidence. Further research is required to explore the impact and effectiveness of AT training for HCPs to ensure that users of devices are supported to live independent and healthy lives.

Background: Increased mindfulness is associated with reduced alcohol consumption in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) after residential treatment. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanism of mindfulness in AUD is unclear. Therefore, we investigate the structural and functional alterations of the thalamocortical system with a focus on the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD-TN), the default mode and the salience network (DMN/SN) which has previously been associated with mindfulness in healthy subjects. We hypothesized lower mindfulness and reduced structural and functional connectivity (FC) of the thalamocortical system, particularly in the DMN/SN in AUD. We assumed that identified neurobiological alterations in AUD are associated with impairments of mindfulness. Methods: Forty-five abstinent patients with AUD during residential treatment and 20 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Structural and resting-state functional MRI-scans were acquired. We analysed levels of mindfulness, thalamic volumes and network centrality degree of the MD-TN using multivariate statistics. Using seed-based whole brain analyses we investigated functional connectivity (FC) of the MD-TN. We performed exploratory correlational analyses of structural and functional DMN/SN measurements with levels of mindfulness. Results: In AUD we found significantly lower levels of mindfulness, lower bilateral thalamic and left MD-TN volumes, reduced FC between MD-TN and anterior cingulum/insula and lower network centrality degree of the left MD-TN as compared to HC. In AUD, lower mindfulness was associated with various reductions of structural and functional aspects of the MD-TN. Conclusion: Our results suggest that structural and functional alterations of a network including the MD-TN and the DMN/SN underlies disturbed mindfulness in AUD.

AIMS: For the first time, to our knowledge, in a clinical sample with alcohol use disorder (AUD), this study compared the effects of two versions of alcohol-specific inhibition training (Alc-IT) on drinking outcomes and on experimental parameters assessing two possible working mechanisms: stimulus devaluation and inhibitory enhancement. DESIGN: Multi-centre, double-blind, three-arm clinical RCT with 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up comparing standard Alc-IT, improved Alc-IT and an active control condition. SETTING: Three specialized AUD treatment centres in Switzerland. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 242 detoxified, recently abstinent patients with severe AUD (18-60 years; 29.8% female). INTERVENTION AND COMPARATOR: Both interventions [standard Alc-IT (n = 84) and improved Alc-IT (n = 79)] and the comparator [unspecific inhibition training (n = 79)] consisted of six sessions of a modified inhibitory task (Go/NoGo task) with alcohol-related and neutral stimuli. Both versions of Alc-IT required response inhibition in alcohol-related trials but differed in Go/NoGo ratios (standard: 50/50; improved: 75/25), with improved Alc-IT posing higher inhibitory demands. The control condition, an unspecific inhibition training, featured alcohol-related pictures in Go as well as NoGo trials. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome, percentage of days abstinent, was assessed at 3-month follow-up with a time-line follow-back interview. FINDINGS: The group receiving improved Alc-IT showed a significantly higher percentage of days abstinent at 3-month follow-up compared with the control group [γcontrol = 74.30; γimproved = 85.78; ß = 11.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.57, 20.40, P = 0.012, adjusted r2 = 0.062], while for standard Alc-IT no effect significantly different from zero was detected (γstandard = 70.95; ß = -3.35, 95% CI = -12.20, 5.50, P = 0.457, adjusted r2 = -0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol-specific inhibition training with high inhibitory demands increased days abstinent at 3-month follow-up in patients with severe alcohol use disorder. Such an improved, inhibitory-demanding, alcohol-specific inhibition training outperformed the standard version of alcohol-specific inhibition training, suggesting an inhibitory working mechanism.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is characterized by enhanced cue-reactivity and the opposing control processes being insufficient. The ability to inhibit reactions to alcohol-related cues, alcohol-specific inhibition, is thus crucial to AUD; and trainings strengthening this ability might increase treatment outcome. The present study investigated whether neurophysiological correlates of alcohol-specific inhibition (I) vary with craving, (II) predict drinking outcome in AUD and (III) are modulated by alcohol-specific inhibition training. A total of 45 recently abstinent patients with AUD and 25 controls participated in this study. All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a Go-NoGo task with alcohol-related as well as neutral conditions. Patients with AUD additionally participated in a double-blind RCT, where they were randomized to either an alcohol-specific inhibition training or an active control condition (non-specific inhibition training). After the training, patients participated in a second fMRI measurement where the Go-NoGo task was repeated. Percentage of days abstinent was assessed as drinking outcome 3 months after discharge from residential treatment. Whole brain analyses indicated that in the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG), activation related to alcohol-specific inhibition varied with craving and predicted drinking outcome at 3-months follow-up. This neurophysiological correlate of alcohol-specific inhibition was however not modulated by the training version. Our results suggest that enhanced rIFG activation during alcohol-specific (compared to neutral) inhibition (I) is needed to inhibit responses when craving is high and (II) fosters sustained abstinence in patients with AUD. As alcohol-specific rIFG activation was not affected by the training, future research might investigate whether potential training effects on neurophysiology are better detectable with other methodological approaches.

INTRODUCTION: In individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), the brain areas underlying cue-induced reactions (e.g., cingulum, striatum, thalamus) and altered activation of these regions have been identified by functional neuroimaging. Neuronal responses to a complex alcohol-related context are yet to investigate. To better understand contextual effects as well as the interplay of cue-induced neural reactions and context exposure, the present study implemented an imagination procedure during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Thirteen patients with AUD and 13 healthy controls completed two rounds of a cue-reactivity paradigm inside an MRI scanner. Two individualized imagination tasks were conducted before each of the two cue reactivity tasks. A 2 (group) × 2 (imagination) × 2 (picture-type) analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. RESULTS: The ANOVA revealed a main effect for imagination with higher activation in bilateral thalamus and right caudate nucleus and an interaction effect between imagination and group in right thalamus and left caudate nucleus, due to the patient group reacting stronger during alcohol-related imagination. These structures are involved in relaying sensory information and habit learning. No main or interaction effects of picture type were observed. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the view that context effects alter the neural responses in thalamus and nucleus caudatus in patients with AUD, and that imagination tasks are suited to incorporate contextual influences in neurophysiological research designs. Future research needs to investigate whether the failure to observe a picture-type effect was due to limited statistical power and omission to individualize picture set, or whether an imagination procedure interferes with the evocation of picture-type effects.

Childhood trauma (CT) is frequent in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and may impact on adult drinking behaviour and treatment outcome. This study aimed to investigate the structural correlates of CT in AUD, focusing on the amygdala, which plays a crucial role in the neurobiology of trauma. We hypothesized reduced amygdala volume and reduced structural connectivity as quantified by fractional anisotropy (FA) and by number of streamlines in those AUD patients with a history of moderate to severe CT (AUD-CT). T1-weighted MP2RAGE and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) 3-Tesla MRI-scans were acquired in 41 recently abstinent patients with AUD. We compared bilateral amygdala volume and structural connectivity (FA and number of streamlines) of pathways emanating from the amygdala between AUD-CT (n = 20) and AUD without CT (AUD-NT, n = 21) using a mixed model multivariate analysis of variance (MANCOVA) controlling for age and gender. AUD-CT displayed reduced FA and reduced number of streamlines of amygdalar tracts. There were no differences regarding amygdala volume. The severity of physical abuse, a subscale of the childhood trauma questionnaire, was negatively correlated with FA and with number of streamlines. AUD-CT and AUD-NT differ regarding structural connectivity of pathways projecting to and from the amygdala, but not regarding amygdala volume. Those alterations of structural connectivity in AUD-CT may represent a distinguishable neurobiological subtype of AUD, which might be associated with the complex clinical picture and poorer outcome that patients with CT and AUD often present.

AIM: Right hemisphere strokes are associated with neuro-behavioural impairments including hemi-inattention, impulsiveness and anosognosia, which can impede stroke recovery and adversely affect carer health. This study explored the impact of associated impairments on carer strain and depression through a mixed methods approach. METHOD: Fifty-one carer-survivor dyads were recruited from inpatient rehabilitation units and followed-up for 6 months. Validated measures assessed survivors' physical and cognitive function and carers' strain and depression levels. Survey methods captured qualitative experiences of the caring role. Data collection occurred at baseline, discharge, 6 weeks post-discharge and 6 months. Multilevel-modelling and thematic data analysis, were employed. RESULTS: Carer strain median scores were within normal ranges of the Caregiver Strain Index scale. Carer strain was positively linked to carer depression, number of carers' concerns reported and survivors' anosognosia levels. Carer strain was negatively linked to the survivors' functional and cognitive abilities. Carers' experiences differed qualitatively with caring concerns increasing over time. CONCLUSION: Carer strain worsens with increases in significant concerns about the rehabilitation process and poor survivor functioning skills, which potentially increase risk of depression in carers. Consequently, improving right-hemisphere stroke survivors' recovery and nurturing the carer-survivor relationship are likely to enhance overall outcomes and caring experiences.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIn the context of right hemisphere stroke: Carer assessment should be comprehensive and include a measure of perceived ability to care.Less strained carers tend to report fewer caring concerns and have lower depression levels.Education, training and practical support should be tailored to carer identified needs, abilities and the caring context.

Introduction: the birth of a child with an intellectual disability requires the definition of the parents' roles in relation to the care of the child. Objective: evaluate how much parental care practices, sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics and family knowledge can have an impact on the oral health of children with intellectual disabilities in the age group from zero to six years of age. Material and method: the level of help given to the child in the practice of oral hygiene was evaluated according to the adapted functional independence scale. The Parental Beliefs and Care Practices Scale assessed primary care and stimulation offered to the child. The presence of dental plaque and the decay-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) index were analyzed. The significance level was 5%. Result: the relative percentage of dental plaque was 11.4%. The DMFT was 2. The prevalence of teeth with indicated extraction is higher in children who receive full assistance for cleaning, when compared to those who receive maximum, moderate help or supervision. Higher levels of dental plaque and decayed teeth were found in children whose parents rated their dental health as poor, hygiene as deficient, and when they believed their children might feel discomfort due to their oral health. Low stimulation frequency resulted in a higher plaque index and number of decayed teeth. Conclusion: the frequency of parental care stimulation influenced the percentage of plaque index and the number of decayed teeth in children with intellectual disabilities.


Introdução: o nascimento de uma criança com deficiência intelectual exige dos pais a definição de suas funções em relação aos cuidados com a criança. Objetivo: investigar o quanto as práticas de cuidados parentais, características sociodemográficas, comportamentais e o conhecimento familiar podem ter impacto na saúde bucal de crianças com deficiência intelectual na faixa etária de zero a seis anos de idade. Material e método: foi avaliado o nível de ajuda cedida à criança na prática de higiene bucal de acordo com a escala de independência funcional adaptada. A Escala de Crenças Parentais e Práticas de Cuidado avaliou os cuidados primários e a estimulação oferecida à criança. Foram analisados a presença de placa dentária e o índice ceo-d. O nível de significância foi de 5%. Resultado: a porcentagem relativa de placa dentária foi de 11,4%. O índice ceo-d foi de 2. A prevalência de dentes com extração indicada é maior em crianças que recebem ajuda total para higienização, quando comparadas as que recebem ajuda máxima, moderada ou supervisão. Níveis mais elevados de placa dentária e dentes cariados foram encontrados nas crianças cujos pais avaliaram a saúde dental como ruim, a higiene como deficiente e quando acreditavam que os filhos podem sentir desconforto em razão de seu estado de saúde bucal. Baixa frequência de estimulação resultou em maior índice de placa e número de dentes cariados. Conclusão: a frequência de estimulação dos cuidados parentais influenciou na porcentagem do índice de placa e no número de dentes cariados nas crianças com deficiência intelectual.

This study aimed to investigate structural and functional alterations of the reward system and the neurobiology of craving in alcohol use disorder (AUD). We hypothesized reduced volume of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), reduced structural connectivity of the segment of the supero-lateral medial forebrain bundle connecting the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) with the NAcc (OFC-NAcc), and reduced resting-state OFC-NAcc functional connectivity (FC). Furthermore, we hypothesized that craving is related to an increase of OFC-NAcc FC. Thirty-nine recently abstinent patients with AUD and 18 healthy controls (HC) underwent structural (T1w-MP2RAGE, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)) and functional (resting-state fMRI) MRI-scans. Gray matter volume of the NAcc, white matter microstructure (fractional anisotropy (FA)) and macrostructure (tract length) of the OFC-NAcc connection and OFC-NAcc FC were compared between AUD and HC using a mixed model MANCOVA controlling for age and gender. Craving was assessed using the thoughts subscale of the obsessive-compulsive drinking scale (OCDS) scale and was correlated with OFC-NAcc FC. There was a significant main effect of group. Results were driven by a volume reduction of bilateral NAcc, reduced FA in the left hemisphere, and reduced tract length of bilateral OFC-NAcc connections in AUD patients. OFC-NAcc FC did not differ between groups. Craving was associated with increased bilateral OFC-NAcc FC. In conclusion, reduced volume of the NAcc and reduced FA and tract length of the OFC-NAcc network suggest structural alterations of the reward network in AUD. Increased OFC-NAcc FC is associated with craving in AUD, and may contribute to situational alcohol-seeking behavior in AUD.

Five Staphylococcus saprophyticus strains were isolated from the fermented milk product nono in Nigeria and were sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq platform. The genome sizes ranged from 2.53 to 2.60 Mbp, while the GC contents ranged from 32.99 to 33.07 mol%. The genomes possessed 2,505 to 2,687 protein-coding sequences.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates neurophysiological correlates of general and alcohol-specific inhibitory control in patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), focusing on its association with individual craving levels and with relapse at three-month follow-up. METHODS: 59 abstinent AUD patients and 20 healthy controls performed a Go/NoGo task incorporating alcohol-related and neutral stimuli during 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recording, yielding four event-related potentials (ERP) per participant (NoGo-Alcohol, Go-Alcohol, NoGo-Neutral, Go-Neutral). Whole-scalp randomization-based statistics assessed effects of the factors group (patients/controls or relapsers/abstainers), craving level, response type (NoGo/Go) and picture type (alcohol/neutral) on topography and signal strength of the ERP components N2 and P3. RESULTS: No differences on group level were observed between patients and controls. However, analyses incorporating individual craving indicated that the topographic difference between alcohol-related and neutral NoGo-N2 components increased with craving. Moreover, topographic differences in the alcohol-related and neutral NoGo-P3 component allowed for differentiation between relapsers and abstainers. CONCLUSIONS: In alcohol-related contexts, the response inhibition conflict reflected in the NoGo-N2 seems enhanced in patients with high craving. The inhibition-sensitive NoGo-P3 varies in relapsers but not in abstainers between neutral and alcohol-related contexts. SIGNIFICANCE: In AUD patients, neurophysiological correlates of inhibition vary with alcohol-related contexts and craving, and might be indicative of relapse risk.

Forty-two antibiotic-resistant enterobacteria strains were isolated from fresh produce obtained from the northern German retail market. A polyphasic characterization based on both phenotypic and genotypic methods was used to identify predominant strains as Citrobacter (C.) gillenii, C. portucalensis, Enterobacter (En.) ludwigii, Escherichia (E.) coli and Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae. 38.1% of the enterobacteria strains were resistant to tetracycline, while 23.8% and 9.5% of strains were resistant to streptomycin and chloramphenicol, respectively. A high percentage of Klebsiella (100%), Enterobacter (57.1%) and Citrobacter (42.9%) strains were also resistant to ampicillin, with some strains showing multiple resistances. For unequivocal species identification, the genomes of thirty strains were sequenced. Multilocus sequence analysis, average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization showed that Enterobacter strains E1 and E13 were clearly clustered apart from Enterobacter species type strains below the species delineation cutoff values. Thus, strains E1T (=DSM 111347T, LMG 31875T) represents a novel species proposed as Enterobacter dykesii sp. nov., while strain E13T (=DSM 110788T, LMG 31764T) represent a novel species proposed as Enterobacter vonholyi sp. nov. Strains often possessed different serine ß-lactamase genes, tet(A) and tet(D) tetracycline resistance genes and other acquired antibiotic resistance genes. Typical plasmid replicon types were determined. This study thus accurately identified the enterobacteria from fresh produce as species belonging to the genera Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia and Klebsiella, but also showed that these can carry potentially transferable antibiotic resistance genes and may thus contribute to the spread of these via the food route.

The well-known stress vulnerability model of psychosis assumes that psychotic episodes result from the coincidence of individual trait dispositions and triggering stressors. We thus hypothesized that a transient psychosocial stressor would not only increase the number of and stress caused by psychosis-like symptoms (like delusion-like symptoms or auditory hallucinations) in healthy subjects but also elicit changes in EEG microstates that have been related to the presence of psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Considering a radical change of one's psychosocial environment as a significant stressor, we analyzed psychotic symptoms and EEG microstate data in teenage exchange-students at an early and a later phase of their stay. The subjects experienced a small and transient, but significant increase of stress by psychosis-like symptoms. These changes in mental state were associated with increases in microstate class A, which has previously been related to unspecific stress. microstate classes C and D, which have consistently been found to be altered in patients with psychosis, were found unaffected by the time of the recording and the subjective stress experiences. Therefore, we conclude that microstate class A appears to be a psychosis independent and rather general correlate of psychosocial stress, whereas changes in microstate classes C and D seem to be more specifically tied to the presence of psychotic symptoms.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is characterized by both impaired inhibitory control and heightened cue reactivity, including enhanced craving and drinking urges in response to alcohol-related stimuli. The interaction between these two mechanisms is thought to be crucial in the maintenance of addiction and relapse. The present study used a newly developed alcohol-related Go/NoGo-task to investigate how exposure to alcohol-related cues affects neural processing of inhibitory control in subjects with AUD. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was recorded during performance of a Go/NoGo task, which incorporated alcohol-related and neutral stimuli as Go and NoGo trials in abstinent AUD patients and healthy controls (HC). AUD patients exhibited increased activation of a fronto-striatal-parietal network during successful response inhibition relative to HC. Within the AUD group, activation for alcohol-related (relative to neutral) inhibition was enhanced in regions including bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), right medial frontal and precentral gyri, and right putamen. Activation differences in the right ACC increased with subjective craving. These preliminary findings suggest that AUD patients need to recruit enhanced neuronal resources for successful inhibition. In parts of the inhibitory network, this hyperactivation is enhanced when inhibition takes place in an alcohol-related context. Activation in the ACC increased stronger in patients experiencing high craving, possibly because of an enhanced conflict. The task introduced here thus allows to investigate neural processing of alcohol-related inhibition in an AUD sample. The preliminary results suggest that exposure to alcohol-related cues intensifies the demand on an already challenged inhibitory system in recently abstinent patients with AUD.

BACKGROUND: Neuroscientific models of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) postulate an imbalance between automatic, implicit, and controlled (conscious) processes. Implicit associations towards alcohol indicate the automatically attributed appeal of alcohol-related stimuli. First, behavioral studies indicate that negative alcohol associations are less pronounced in patients compared to controls, but potential neurophysiological differences remain unexplored. This study investigates neurophysiological correlates of implicit alcohol associations in recently abstinent patients with AUD for the first time, including possible gender effects. METHODS: A total of 62 patients (40 males and 22 females) and 21 controls performed an alcohol valence Implicit Association Test, combining alcohol-related pictures with positive (incongruent condition) or negative (congruent condition) words, while brain activity was recorded using 64-channel electroencephalography. Event-related potentials (ERPs) for alcohol-negative and alcohol-positive trials were computed. Microstate analyses investigated the effects of group (patients, controls) and condition (incongruent, congruent); furthermore, possible gender effects in patients were analyzed. Significant effects were localized with standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic topography analysis. RESULTS: Although no behavioral group differences were found, ERPs of patients and controls were characterized by distinct microstates from 320 ms onwards. ERPs between conditions differed only in patients with higher signal strength during incongruent trials. Around 600 ms, controls displayed higher signal strength than patients. A gender effect mirrored this pattern with enhanced signal strength in females as opposed to male patients. Around 690 ms, a group-by-valence interaction indicated enhanced signal strength in congruent compared to incongruent trials, which was more pronounced in controls. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with AUD, the pattern, timing, and source localization of effects suggest greater effort regarding semantic and self-relevant integration around 400 ms during incongruent trials and attenuated emotional processing during the late positive potential timeframe. Interestingly, this emotional attenuation seemed reduced in female patients, thus corroborating the importance of gender-sensitive research and potential treatment of AUD.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) show altered brain responses to alcohol cues as compared to healthy controls. Event-related potential (ERP) studies mostly focus on the P3, which is usually diminished in AUD patients. The few studies that have investigated earlier components have yielded inconsistent results. The present study aimed at identifying the onset of impaired alcohol cue processing in AUD patients, as well as the association between neurophysiological processing and subjective craving. METHODS: A sample of 15 inpatients with AUD and 15 healthy controls completed a cue reactivity task with alcohol-related, neutral, and scrambled pictures. Multichannel-EEG was recorded from 70 scalp electrodes, and ERP microstates were analyzed. RESULTS: Patients displayed impaired neurophysiological processing, as indexed by a weaker P3 and a weaker, insensitive P1. The blunted P1 was associated with higher subjective craving. CONCLUSIONS: Impaired alcohol cue processing in AUD emerges early, at the stage of sensory processing. Such deficient initial processing seems crucial to understanding cue reactivity processes in the brain and in the subjective experience of craving. SIGNIFICANCE: The results highlight the importance of investigating early ERP components preceding the P3, and contribute to the debate on the onset of information-processing dysfunction in the addicted brain.

Serratia liquefaciens strain S1 was isolated from mixed greens and sequenced with short-read Illumina MiSeq technology and long-read MinION technology. Hybrid sequence assembly generated a complete single circular chromosome and two extrachromosomal contigs, which together encoded 5,098 proteins, 85 tRNAs, and 22 rRNAs.
