RESUMO

Year-round conditioning specifically designed for basketball has reached a high level of sophistication over the past several decades. There is growing evidence that it can contribute to improved performance and reduced injury. The major components of conditioning for basketball have been identified as anaerobic power (stages I and II), aerobic power, muscular strength/power/endurance, and flexibility. The concept of year-round conditioning uses the principles of periodization in work and rest to achieve peak performance and avoid injury. There are unique problems associated with the various levels of competition that require diligent monitoring on the part of the coach to maximize physical condition and avoid overtraining.

RESUMO

In brief Acute thigh compartment syndrome is a rare but limb-threatening condition that can result when an athlete sustains a thigh contusion. Early diagnosis is imperative; cardinal findings Include pain, thigh distension, decreased knee range of motion, neurovascular impairment, and elevated compartment pressures. Treatment consists of surgical decompression. An early rehabilitation program can restore range of motion, mobility, and sports skills.

RESUMO

In brief: The symptoms of bone tumors can be mistaken for those of overuse injuries or muscle strains or sprains. Such a missed diagnosis not only raises medicolegal questions, but can delay necessary, prompt treatment. This article presents four cases of bone tumors originally thought to be sports- related injuries. The authors stress the need for follow-up and for diagnostic tests to minimize the risk of incorrect diagnoses.
