RESUMO

The goal of this study is to investigate patterns that emerge in brain and heart signals in response to external stimulating image regimes. Data were collected from 84 subjects of ages 18-22. Subjects viewed a series of both neutrally and negatively arousing pictures during 2-min and 18-s-long segments repeated nine times. Both brain [electroencephalogram (EEG)] and heart signals [electrocardiogram (EKG)] were recorded for the duration of the study (ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 h) and analyzed using nonlinear techniques. Specifically, the fractal dimension was computed from the EEG to determine how this voltage trace is related to the image sequencing. Our results showed that subjects visually stimulated by a series of mixed images (a randomized set of neutrally or negatively arousing images) had a significantly higher fractal dimension compared to subjects visually triggered by pure images (an organized set of either all neutral or all negatively arousing images). In addition, our results showed that subjects who performed better on memory recall had a higher fractal dimension computed from the EEG. Analysis of EKG also showed greater heart rate variability in subjects who viewed a series of mixed images compared to subjects visually triggered by pure images. Overall, our results show that the healthy brain and heart are responsive to environmental stimuli that promote adaptability, flexibility, and agility.

Although it has been suggested that many effects of emotion on memory are attributable to attention, in the present study we addressed the hypothesis that such effects may relate to a number of different factors during encoding or postencoding. One way to look at the effects of emotion on memory is by examining the emotion-induced memory trade-off, whereby enhanced memory for emotional items often comes at the cost of memory for surrounding background information. We present evidence that this trade-off cannot be explained solely by overt attention (measured via eyetracking) directed to the emotional items during encoding. Participants did not devote more overt attention to emotional than to neutral items when those items were selectively remembered (at the expense of their backgrounds). Only when participants were asked to answer true/false questions about the items and the backgrounds--a manipulation designed to affect both overt attention and poststimulus elaboration--was there a reduction in selective emotional item memory due to an increase in background memory. These results indicate that the allocation of overt visual attention during encoding is not sufficient to predict the occurrence of selective item memory for emotional items.

Using a rapid serial visual presentation task, the authors examined how the emotional valence of a word affected young and older adults' abilities to detect another word that closely followed it in temporal proximity. Both age groups detected neutral words better when such words followed a positive or negative arousing word rather than a neutral arousing word. These results suggest that emotion influences attention in a similar fashion for young and older adults. Despite evidence that older adults can sometimes show a "positivity effect" in memory, we found no evidence of increased attention toward positive words for older adults.
