RESUMO

Children with intussusception can present with a wide variety of symptoms, including vomiting, fever, lethargy, and abdominal pain. The classic triad of abdominal pain, hematochezia, and palpable abdominal mass is seen in a few patients.• Early diagnosis of intussusception depends on a high level of clinical suspicion in any child with non specific abdominal findings followed by appropriate radiographic or ultrasonographic evaluation and confirmation with a contrast enema.• Abdominal radiography, although an appropriate component of the initial workup for gastrointestinal symptoms, lacks the sensitivity to reliably exclude the presence of intussusception.• Because ultrasonography is a safe, sensitive, and specific test for the diagnosis of intussusceptions, it should be performed early whenever there is clinical suspicion of intussusception.• Contrast enema is the gold standard for diagnosis and first-line treatment of intussusception. There is an increasing trend for pneumatic reduction of intussusception compared with hydrostatic reduction.Intravenous placement, fluid resuscitation, and notification of the pediatric surgeon should be completed before contrast enema.

RESUMO

The case presented herein is of an 8-year-old female with nine large brain abscesses of unknown etiology. One lesion was excised by craniotomy. Two days later, in view of impending brain herniation, the remaining eight abscesses were treated on an urgent basis by stereotactic aspiration. Immediate postoperative CT showed total disappearance of all lesions. This case demonstrates that some brain abscesses can be successfully treated utilizing a minimally invasive technique and aggressive antibiotic therapy, without necessitating surgical removal of abscess capsule, multiple aspirations, or implantation of an irrigation system.

RESUMO

Research indicates that breastfeeding provides a wide array of physical and psychological benefits to both mother and child. Breastfeeding is also a practical way for families, government and society to save money. Although breastfeeding rates in South Dakota mirror national rates, data shows that participants of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, especially American Indians, have much lower rates of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding may be particularly important in tribal communities because of its ability to alleviate health problems, such as infant mortality and diabetes, which are particularly devastating to American Indians. Economic benefits also can be measured to determine advantages to breastfeeding. The following article reviews the extensive benefits that breastfeeding can provide to American Indian women and their families.
