Objective: The most common extraintestinal pathogen and infection site is uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), which causes urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC is also a common pathogen in bloodstream infections; in severe cases, it can lead to death. Although host and bacterial virulence factors have been demonstrated to be associated with UTI pathogenesis, the role of the related contributing factors in UTI and urinary source bacteremia is not yet fully understood. This study aimed to compare and analyze the factors contributing to urinary bacteremia in patients with UTI. Methods: A total of 171 E. coli strains collected from patients with UTI and urinary source bacteremia at Chiayi Christian Hospital were used. Phylogenetic groups and virulence factors were determined using PCR. Drug resistance patterns were determined using the disk diffusion assay. Results: Previous studies have demonstrated that fimbriae and papGII may be associated with first-step infections and severe UTIs, respectively. As expected, highly virulent E. coli strains (belonging to the phylogenetic B2 and D groups) were dominant in the bacteremic UTI (90%) and UTI (86.27%) groups. However, our results showed that the UTI group had a significantly higher prevalence of sfa/focDE (belonging to the S and FIC fimbriae) than the bacteremic UTI group (29.4% vs 12.5%; p=0.008). In the bacteremic group, we found that sfa/focDE was only detected in highly virulent strains. The bacteremic UTI group had a significantly higher prevalence of papGII (belonging to P fimbriae) than the UTI group (55.8% vs 37.3%; p=0.026). In addition, the P fimbriae gene cluster, including papC, papEF, and papGII, was predominant in highly virulent strains. Notably, our results show that multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains were significantly less virulent than non MDR strains. Conclusion: Taken together, our results provide insights into the contributing factors in patients with UTI and urinary bacteremia.

Biomacromolecules have attracted interest as spraying additives due to their degradability, renewability, and non-toxicity. However, microscopic mechanism of the biomacromolecules regulating the droplet behavior on fruits and vegetables is still unclear. In this study, konjac glucomannan (KGM) was used to improve the spraying efficiency and the fresh-keeping performance of tea polyphenols solution. KGM increased effective spreading ratio on hydrophilic surfaces and retention ratio of the main droplet on hydrophobic surfaces, thus improving spraying efficiency. Computational fluid dynamics and Brown dynamics simulations were implemented to investigate KGM behaviors during droplets colliding on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. Most KGM molecules extended and then collapsed in gradually weakened shear flow. Meanwhile, on the hydrophobic surface, most KGM molecules were continuously stretched by the unstable flow field. As the KGM extended, the kinetic energy of droplets converted into elastic energy stored in the KGM, promoting the stability of droplets on target surfaces and improving the spraying efficiency. The KGM molecular weight of 3.8 × 105 Da was optimal from the point of energy storage density. This study provides more understanding of the mechanism of biomacromolecules on spraying efficiency and guidance to develop biomass spraying additives for fruit and vegetable preservation.

Food packaging detection devices have attracted attention to optimize storage situations and reduce food spoilage. However, low-cost and highly sensitive multifunctional sensors for detecting both food freshness and packaging pressure are still lacking. In this study, a multifunctional sensor was developed consisting of a MXene coated alcohol-soluble polyurethane fiber network (MXene/APU) and composite biohydrogel films made of konjac glucomannan, chitosan, and blueberry anthocyanin (KCB). Based on the pressure sensitivity of MXene/APU and the color changes of KCB in response to pH values, the sensor can detect internal package bulging, external squeezing, and food deterioration. The pressure sensor shows a sensitivity of 1.16 kPa-1, a response time of 200 ms, a wide strain range of 1092%, and stability over multiple loops. The pressure sensor could detect human motion and identify surface morphologies. The excellent sensor performance was attributed to the porous structure and large specific surface area of microfiber networks, conductivity of MXene nanosheets, and protective effect of KCB films coated on the conductive membrane. Besides, the microfluidic blow-spinning method used to prepare microfiber networks showed the advantages of low energy consumption and high production efficiency. Based on the color changes of blueberry anthocyanin loaded in KCB films in response to pH, the sensor realized sensitive spoilage detection of food containing protein. This study provides a new multifunctional food packaging sensing device and a greater understanding of the optimization and application of related devices.

The complexity of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) including many interacting biological processes makes it difficult to find therapeutic biomarkers for treatment. Previous studies demonstrated that PSMG (proteasome assembly chaperone) family members regulate the degradation of abnormal proteins. However, transcript expressions of this gene family in LUAD still need to be more fully investigated. Therefore, we used a holistic bioinformatics approach to explore PSMG genes involved in LUAD patients by integrating several high-throughput databases and tools including The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and Kaplan-Meier plotter database. These data demonstrated that PSMG3 and PSMG4 were expressed at significantly higher levels in neoplastic cells than in normal lung tissues. Notably, increased expressions of these proteins were correlated with poor prognoses of lung cancer patients, which probably confirmed their fundamental roles in the staging of LUAD tumors. Meanwhile, it was also indicated that there were positive correlations between PSMG family genes and the immune response, metabolism of ubiquinone, cell cycle regulatory pathways, and heat shock protein 90 (HSP90)/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Wnt signaling. Experimental data also confirmed that the knockdown of PSMG4 in LUAD cell lines decreased cell proliferation and influenced expressions of downstream molecules. Collectively, this study revealed that PSMG family members are novel prognostic biomarkers for LUAD progression, which also provide new therapeutic targets of LUAD patients.

The outcomes for patients with NASH-related HCC after curative resection have not been clarified. This study compared the overall survival (OS), time-to-tumor recurrence (TTR), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) associated with NASH-related HCC and virus-related HCC after resection. Methods: Patients with HCC who underwent curative resection were retrospectively enrolled. Baseline characteristics, including disease etiologies and clinical and tumor features, were reviewed. The primary outcomes were OS, TTR, and RFS. Results: Two hundred and six patients were enrolled (HBV: n = 121, HCV: n = 54, NASH: n = 31). Of those with virus-related HCC, 84.0% achieved viral suppression. In both the overall and propensity-score-matched cohorts, those with NASH-related HCC experienced recurrence significantly earlier than those with virus-related HCC (median TTR: 1108 days vs. non-reached; p = 0.03). Through multivariate analysis, NASH-related HCC (hazard ratio (HR), 2.27; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.25-4.12) was independently associated with early recurrence. The unadjusted RFS rate of the NASH-related HCC group was lower than the virus-related HCC group. There was no difference in the OS between the two groups. Conclusions: NASH-related HCC was associated with earlier tumor recurrence following curative resection compared to virus-related HCC. Post-surgical surveillance is crucial for detecting early recurrence in patients with NASH-related HCC.

Breast cancer is one of the leading deaths in all kinds of malignancies; therefore, it is important for early detection. At the primary tumor site, tumor cells could take on mesenchymal properties, termed the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). This process is partly regulated by members of the cadherin (CDH) family of genes, and it is an essential step in the formation of metastases. There has been a lot of study of the roles of some of the CDH family genes in cancer; however, a holistic approach examining the roles of distinct CDH family genes in the development of breast cancer remains largely unexplored. In the present study, we used a bioinformatics approach to examine expression profiles of CDH family genes using the Oncomine, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis 2 (GEPIA2), cBioPortal, MetaCore, and Tumor IMmune Estimation Resource (TIMER) platforms. We revealed that CDH1/2/4/11/12/13 messenger (m)RNA levels are overexpressed in breast cancer cells compared to normal cells and were correlated with poor prognoses in breast cancer patients' distant metastasis-free survival. An enrichment analysis showed that high expressions of CDH1/2/4/11/12/13 were significantly correlated with cell adhesion, the extracellular matrix remodeling process, the EMT, WNT/beta-catenin, and interleukin-mediated immune responses. Collectively, CDH1/2/4/11/12/13 are thought to be potential biomarkers for breast cancer progression and metastasis.

Monkeypox virus (MPV) is a smallpox-like virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus of the family Poxviridae. Unlike smallpox with no animal reservoir identified and patients suffering from milder symptoms with less mortality, several animals were confirmed to serve as natural hosts of MPV. The reemergence of a recently reported monkeypox epidemic outbreak in nonendemic countries has raised concerns about a global outburst. Since the underlying mechanism of animal-to-human transmission remains largely unknown, comprehensive analyses to discover principal differences in gene signatures during disease progression have become ever more critical. In this study, two MPV-infected in vitro models, including human immortal epithelial cancer (HeLa) cells and rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) kidney epithelial (MK2) cells, were chosen as the two subjects to identify alterations in gene expression profiles, together with co-regulated genes and pathways that are affected during monkeypox disease progression. Using Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and MetaCore analyses, we discovered that elevated expression of genes associated with interleukins (ILs), G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), heat shock proteins (HSPs), Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and metabolic-related pathways play major roles in disease progression of both monkeypox-infected monkey MK2 and human HeLa cell lines. Interestingly, our analytical results also revealed that a cluster of differentiation 40 (CD40), plasmin, and histamine served as major regulators in the monkeypox-infected monkey MK2 cell line model, while interferons (IFNs), macrophages, and neutrophil-related signaling pathways dominated the monkeypox-infected human HeLa cell line model. Among immune pathways of interest, apart from traditional monkeypox-regulated signaling pathways such as nuclear factor- (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), and tumor necrosis factors (TNFs), we also identified highly significantly expressed genes in both monkey and human models that played pivotal roles during the progression of monkeypox infection, including CXCL1, TNFAIP3, BIRC3, IL6, CCL2, ZC3H12A, IL11, CSF2, LIF, PTX3, IER3, EGR1, ADORA2A, and DUOX1, together with several epigenetic regulators, such as histone cluster family gene members, HIST1H3D, HIST1H2BJ, etc. These findings might contribute to specific underlying mechanisms related to the pathophysiology and provide suggestions regarding modes of transmission, post-infectious sequelae, and vaccine development for monkeypox in the future.

BACKGROUND: Improper endotracheal tube (ETT) positioning is frequently observed and potentially hazardous in the intensive care unit. The authors developed a deep learning-based automatic detection algorithm detecting the ETT tip and carina on portable supine chest radiographs to measure the ETT-carina distance. This study investigated the hypothesis that the algorithm might be more accurate than frontline critical care clinicians in ETT tip detection, carina detection, and ETT-carina distance measurement. METHODS: A deep learning-based automatic detection algorithm was developed using 1,842 portable supine chest radiographs of 1,842 adult intubated patients, where two board-certified intensivists worked together to annotate the distal ETT end and tracheal bifurcation. The performance of the deep learning-based algorithm was assessed in 4-fold cross-validation (1,842 radiographs), external validation (216 radiographs), and an observer performance test (462 radiographs) involving 11 critical care clinicians. The performance metrics included the errors from the ground truth in ETT tip detection, carina detection, and ETT-carina distance measurement. RESULTS: During 4-fold cross-validation and external validation, the median errors (interquartile range) of the algorithm in ETT-carina distance measurement were 3.9 (1.8 to 7.1) mm and 4.2 (1.7 to 7.8) mm, respectively. During the observer performance test, the median errors (interquartile range) of the algorithm were 2.6 (1.6 to 4.8) mm, 3.6 (2.1 to 5.9) mm, and 4.0 (1.7 to 7.2) mm in ETT tip detection, carina detection, and ETT-carina distance measurement, significantly superior to that of 6, 10, and 7 clinicians (all P < 0.05), respectively. The algorithm outperformed 7, 3, and 0, 9, 6, and 4, and 5, 5, and 3 clinicians (all P < 0.005) regarding the proportions of chest radiographs within 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm error in ETT tip detection, carina detection, and ETT-carina distance measurement, respectively. No clinician was significantly more accurate than the algorithm in any comparison. CONCLUSIONS: A deep learning-based algorithm can match or even outperform frontline critical care clinicians in ETT tip detection, carina detection, and ETT-carina distance measurement.

PURPOSE: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of possible perioperative complications following all-inside anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Additional techniques and tips are proposed to prevent and manage complications. METHODS: Complications following all-inside ACLR performed between December 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively analysed. Altogether, 348 operations were performed and 275 patients were enrolled with a minimum 12-month follow-up period. Only semitendinosus autograft was utilised in most patients, and semitendinosus-gracilis autograft and allograft were used in five and 31 patients, respectively. Simultaneous meniscal repair, partial meniscectomy, and chondral surgery were performed in 29.5%, 21.1%, and 4.4% of patients, respectively. Complications were observed based on the patient's clinical condition, plain film, and magnetic resonance imaging. Clinical outcomes were assessed pre-operatively and at 12 months post-operatively, using the International Knee Documentation Committee form, Lysholm and Tegner activity scores, and KT1000 side-to-side difference. RESULTS: Intraoperative and post-operative complications developed in 65 patients (23.6%). The most common complication was cortical button malposition on the femoral side (19.3%). Intra-operative breakage of the retrograde drill was found in two cases (0.73%), with three cases (1.1%) of over-drilling with destruction of the outer cortex. Post-operatively, four (1.5%), 13 (4.7%), and 16 (5.8%) cases of infection, full-thickness re-rupture, and loss of extension, respectively, were recorded. Functional outcome scales showed significant post-operative improvement. CONCLUSION: Cortical button malposition was the most common but easily preventable complication. All-inside ACLR could be safe and promising after the suggested additional operative techniques and proper perioperative management which decrease complication rates and improve favourable outcomes.

BACKGROUND Excessive portal flow to an allograft was a key mechanism for small-for-size syndrome in living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Good outcomes in LDLT by graft inflow modulation (GIM) using a small graft were reported, but the effect on hepatic hemodynamics is undefined. This report summarizes our experience with GIM and compares the effects of splenic artery ligation (SAL) and splenectomy on hepatic hemodynamic changes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety-nine patients who underwent adult-to-adult LDLT from June 2014 to December 2020 were included in this study. GIM was performed in 36 patients (17 patients with SAL and 19 with splenectomy). RESULTS The GIM group had lower graft-to-recipient weight compared to the no-modulation group (median, 0.91% versus 1.04%, P=0.022). Initial portal venous flow (PVF) was higher in the GIM group (median, 311 versus 156 ml/min/100 g, P<0.001). After GIM, PVF decreased to 224 ml/min/100 g. One-year graft survival with GIM was 89.9%, and for the no-modulation group it was 86.6% (P=0.945). In the subgroup analysis, the efficacy of decompressing PVF was higher in the splenectomy subgroup (median, 14.3% versus 41.8%, P=0.002). CONCLUSIONS GIM was useful for grafts with high PVF. Splenectomy modulated excessive PVF more effectively than did SAL. Perioperative hepatic hemodynamic changes could assist surgeons in selecting different GIM strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Induction chemotherapy (IC) followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is recommended for larynx-preserving treatment of locally advanced hypopharyngeal cancer (LAHC). However, the conventional evaluation of response is not robust enough to predict the outcome of subsequent treatments. This study aimed to develop an imaging biomarker using changes in radiomic features in invasive tumor front (ITF) by IC to predict treatment outcome of subsequent CCRT in LAHC. METHODS: From 2006 to 2018, 59 computed tomography (CT) scan images before and after IC in patients with LAHC were used to contour the gross tumor volumes (GTVs). A total of 48 delta-volume radiomics features were acquired from the absolute spatial difference of GTVs (delta-GTV) before and after IC, conceptually representing a consistent portion of ITF. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO) was used to select features for establishing the model generating radiomic score (R score). RESULTS: A model including 5 radiomic features from delta-GTV to predict better progression-free survival (PFS) of patients receiving subsequent CCRT was established. The R score was validated with all datasets (area under the curve 0.77). Low R score (<-0.16) was associated with improved PFS (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The established radiomic model for ITF from radiomic features of delta-GTV after IC might be a potential imaging biomarker for predicting clinical outcome of subsequent CCRT in LAHC.

Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, wearing facemasks has become more important for healthcare workers. This study aimed to investigate and compare the influence of wearing N95 respirators and surgical masks for 8 h on physiological and psychological health. Sixty-eight healthcare workers were randomly assigned to the N95 respirator or surgical mask groups. Physiological parameters of participants were measured by Tensor Tip MTX at baseline and at the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th h of wearing the facemasks. The symptoms after wearing facemasks were also determined via the questionnaire. There were no significant changes in physiological parameters at most time checkpoints in both groups. Significant differences were observed in terms of heart rate at the 8th h, time trends (adjusted difference of least squares means were -8.53 and -2.01), and interaction of time and mask type between the two groups (p-value for interaction was 0.0146). The values of these physiological parameters were within normal ranges. The N95 respirator group had significantly higher incidences of shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, difficulty talking and fatigue that spontaneously resolved. In conclusion, healthcare workers who wore either N95 respirators or surgical masks during an 8 h shift had no obvious harmful effects on physiological and psychological health. Additionally, the N95 respirator group did not show a higher risk than the surgical mask group.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to arsenic (As)-containing pesticides was associated with an increased risk for Parkinson's disease (PD). Arsenic also induced in murine brains α-synuclein aggregates, a pathognomic feature of PD. OBJECTIVES: People living on farms irrigated with high As water in Taiwan are likely exposed to increased As. We addressed whether increased farm soil As levels correlate with an increased PD risk. METHODS: We used the information from several national surveys (1983-1986) on soil metal contents to study the relationships between soil metal contents and PD prevalence in Taiwan. PD prevalence (2009-2013) was calculated with a database from Taiwan's compulsory national health insurance. A patient is defined by a PD diagnosis and prescriptions of Levodopa in three or more office visits in twelve months. We used regression models to study the correlation between PD prevalence and soil metal contents. RESULTS: The PD prevalence ranged from 83 to 213 per one hundred thousand persons in different regions of Taiwan. Among the studied heavy metals, we found only As was significantly associated with the PD prevalence. The top three regions (Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan) in the PD prevalence list correspond exactly with the top three in soil As levels. Soil As levels and PD prevalence had a strong correlation (r = 0.75). CONCLUSION: PD prevalence is statistically correlated with farm soil As levels in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has instilled fear and stress among healthcare workers. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess work stress and associated factors among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 outbreak and to evaluate whether prior experience of treating severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) had a positive or negative influence on healthcare workers' stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey in a tertiary hospital in Kaohsiung City, in southern Taiwan. METHODS: The survey was conducted using an online self-administered questionnaire to measure the stress levels among healthcare workers from March 20 to April 20, 2020. The stress scales were divided into four subscales: worry of social isolation; discomfort caused by the protective equipment; difficulties and anxiety regarding infection control; and workload of caring for patients. RESULTS: The total stress scores were significantly higher among healthcare workers who were aged 41 or above, female, married, parents and nurses. Those with experience of treating SARS reported having significantly higher stress scores on the subscale measuring the discomfort caused by protective equipment and the workload of caring for patients. During the COVID-19 outbreak, frontline healthcare workers with experience of treating SARS indicated having higher stress levels regarding the workload of caring for patients than did non-frontline healthcare workers with no experience of treating SARS. CONCLUSIONS: Work experience from dealing with the 2003 SARS virus may have had a negative psychological impact on healthcare workers amidst the COVID-19 outbreak.

Hollow organ perforation can precipitate a life-threatening emergency due to peritonitis followed by fulminant sepsis and fatal circulatory collapse. Pneumoperitoneum is typically detected as subphrenic free air on frontal chest X-ray images; however, treatment is reliant on accurate interpretation of radiographs in a timely manner. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to have misdiagnoses made by emergency physicians who have insufficient experience or who are too busy and overloaded by multitasking. It is essential to develop an automated method for reviewing frontal chest X-ray images to alert emergency physicians in a timely manner about the life-threatening condition of hollow organ perforation that mandates an immediate second look. In this study, a deep learning-based approach making use of convolutional neural networks for the detection of subphrenic free air is proposed. A total of 667 chest X-ray images were collected at a local hospital, where 587 images (positive/negative: 267/400) were used for training and 80 images (40/40) for testing. This method achieved 0.875, 0.825, and 0.889 in sensitivity, specificity, and AUC score, respectively. It may provide a sensitive adjunctive screening tool to detect pneumoperitoneum on images read by emergency physicians who have insufficient clinical experience or who are too busy and overloaded by multitasking.

Since December 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic crisis has led to profound changes around the world with a lot of interdictions or constraints to travel outside one's own country. One of the major consequences has been the development of proximity tourism in outdoor spaces less conducive to the spread of the virus. From a study preceding this pandemic, this article seeks to better understand the experiences lived by domestic tourists when they visited protected natural parks in their country. Beyond the health risks, it analyses the dimensions and the influences of experiences lived in these parks by French domestic tourists (n = 500) using Pine and Gilmore's 4Es model (1999). From a literature on the tourism experiences for domestic tourists adapted to natural parks and a critical review on the use and validation of Oh et al.'s scale (2007) in tourism, a structural equation model and a nested SEM show the positive relationship between three dimensions of the 4Es on the arousal and memory outcomes. Theoretically and methodologically speaking, this study extends the 4Es model in the direction of low arousal and mundane experiences for domestic tourists in protected natural parks, and questions Oh, Fiore, and Jeoung (2007) scale through the number of items, the use of EFA and the removal of the aesthetics dimension. This research can help managers of protected natural parks adapt their domestic tourists' experience offer during health crisis by implementing specific marketing strategies for low arousal and mundane experiences with more outdoor activities and digital services.

BACKGROUND: The superiority of anatomic resection (AR) over non-anatomic resection (NAR) for very early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has remained a topic of debate. Thus, this study aimed to compare the prognosis after AR and NAR for single HCC less than 2 cm in diameter. METHODS: Consecutive patients with single HCC of diameter less than 2 cm who underwent curative hepatectomy between 1997 and 2017 were included in this retrospective study. RESULTS: In total, 159 patients were included in this study. Of these, 52 patients underwent AR (AR group) and 107 patients underwent NAR (NAR group). No significant differences were noted in recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) between the AR and NAR groups (P = 0.236 and P = 0.363, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that low preoperative platelet count and presence of satellite nodules were independent prognostic factors of RFS and OS. Wide surgical resection margin did not affect RFS (P = 0.692) in the AR group; however, in the NAR group, RFS was found to be higher with surgical resection margin widths ≥1 cm than with surgical resection margin widths <1 cm (P = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS: Prognosis was comparable between the NAR and AR groups for very early-stage HCC with well-preserved liver function. For better oncologic outcomes, surgeons should endeavor in keeping the surgical resection margin widths during NAR ≥1 cm.

Patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of adult onset, were found less than 9 years of life expectancy after onset. The disorders include bradykinesia and rigidity commonly seen in Parkinsonism disease and additional signs such as autonomic dysfunction, ataxia, or dementia. In clinical treatments, MSA poorly responds to levodopa, the drug used to remedy Parkinsonism disease. The exact cause of MSA is still unknown, and exploring a therapeutic solution to MSA remains critical. A transgenic mouse model was established to study the feasibility of human adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) therapy in vivo. The human ADSCs were transplanted into the striatum of transgenic mice via intracerebral injection. As compared with sham control, we reported significantly enhanced rotarod performance of transgenic mice treated with ADSC at an effective dose, 2 × 105 ADSCs/mouse. Our ex vivo feasibility study supported that intracerebral transplantation of ADSC might alleviate striatal degeneration in MSA transgenic mouse model by improving the nigrostriatal pathway for dopamine, activating autophagy for α-synuclein clearance, decreasing inflammatory signal, and further cell apoptosis, improving myelination and cell survival at caudate-putamen.

This study aimed to investigate the perceived work stress and its influencing factors among hospital staff during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Taiwan. A web-based survey was conducted at one medical center and two regional hospitals in southern Taiwan, targeting physicians, nurses, medical examiners, and administrators. The questionnaire included items on the demographic characteristics of hospital staff and a scale to assess stress among healthcare workers caring for patients with a highly infectious disease. A total of 752 valid questionnaires were collected. The hospital staff reported a moderate level of stress and nurses had a highest level of stress compared to staff in the other three occupational categories. The five highest stress scores were observed for the items "rough and cracked hands due to frequent hand washing and disinfectant use," "inconvenience in using the toilet at work," "restrictions on eating and drinking at work," "fear of transmitting the disease to relatives and friends," and "fear of being infected with COVID-19." Discomfort caused by protective equipment was the major stressor for the participants, followed by burden of caring for patients. Among participants who experienced severe stress (n = 129), work stress was higher among those with rather than without minor children. The present findings may serve as a reference for future monitoring of hospital staff's workload, and may aid the provision of support and interventions.
