RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Although benign tumours are thought to be relatively uncommon in the orofacial region, the incidence differs according to the country. The purpose of this study was to systematically analyse the incidence of benign tumours of maxillofacial region within the Libyan population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 405 cases of benign tumours reported at the Faculty of Dentistry, Arab Medical Science University, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya between 1991 and 2007 were analysed. RESULTS: Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (35.1%) was the most common. Among the non-odontogenic tumours, there were 85 cases of fibrous and adipose tissue origin (33%), 66 cases of bone tumours (26%), 51 cases of epithelial tumours (20%), 37 cases of vascular origin (14%) and 18 neurogenic (7%). CONCLUSION: In comparison with other international studies, the incidence of benign tumours of orofacial region is relatively lower in Libyan population. The results of the study were more consistent with those from Turkey than other African and European countries.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of orofacial tumors and tumor like lesions in Libyan children and adolescents, and compare our findings with reports in the literature. METHODS: A total of 213 cases of tumors and tumor like lesions were seen in patients aged 18 years and less during a period of 17 years. RESULTS: There were 8 cases (3.7%) of malignant tumors in our study, 35 cases (16.4%) of benign odontogenic tumors and 170 cases (89%) of benign tumors and tumor like lesions of orofacial region were seen in this study. orofacial tumors are not uncommon among the Libyan children and adolescents. CONCLUSION: A slightly lower incidence of malignant tumors was observed as a result of the less number of cases of Burkitt's lymphoma, in comparison to other reports from Africa.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of trauma victims of age 60 years and older who required maxillofacial intervention. The study analyses the pattern of injuries and the various factors that predict the treatment plan of these patients. A retrospective study was carried out in 1820 trauma patients who reported to the Sri. Ramachandra Dental College and Hospital and required maxillofacial intervention, over a period of 5 years (October 2000 and September 2005). Of the total trauma victims, 185 patients were found to be aged 60 years more. In the majority of the patients, the injury was due to road traffic accidents (79.4%). Males (72.4%) sustained more injuries than females (27.6%). Soft tissue injuries were seen in 49.1% of the patients, while 14% had mandibular fractures. People in their early 60s were injured more often than their older counterparts. The findings of this study highlight the present situation with regard to maxillofacial trauma in patients aged 60 years and older and its management in this part of the country.

RESUMO

We describe the pattern of mandibular fractures in Chennai, and confirm that, as in most other large cities, the main cause is road traffic accidents.

RESUMO

We reviewed the medical records of 2748 patients treated for maxillofacial injuries at Sri Ramachandra Medical and Dental College and Hospital between January 1999 and December 2005. 1332 (42%) had soft tissue injuries, 1176 (37%) had mid face fractures, and 512 (16%) had mandibular fractures. Most patients with midface fractures had fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary region 422 (36%), while fractures of the parasymphyseal region were more common in the mandible 156 (31%). Most patients were in the 21-30 year-old age group, and the male:female ratio was 3.7:1. Road crashes, particularly involving motorcycles, accounted for 1710 (62%), with a high prevalence during the month of September and on Saturdays.
