RESUMO

ZnO-CaF2-P2O5 glasses doped with different concentrations of V2O5 (ranging from 0 to 1.0 mol %) were prepared. The prepared bio glasses are soaked in SBF for duration of 2, 3, 7 and 10 days in separate plastic containers and then kept in incubator maintained at body temperature 36.5 °C. The influence of valence states of vanadium ions (V4+/V5+) with respect to the structural aspects by means of FTIR and Raman Spectra, elastic properties by means of relevant parameters, the thermal stability by means of DTA studies and other spectroscopic properties by using OA and ESR studies are studied. The raise in wavenumber and comparative areas of the two absorption bands corresponding to electronic transitions 2B2g → E2g, 2B2g → 2B1g respectively in optical absorption spectra of these CZPV glasses clearly indicate that vanadium ions have octahedral co-ordination with tetragonal compression due to modifier action of V2O5in the glass network. The optical absorption and ESR studies have revealed that vanadium ions exist in V4+ states. The characteristic temperatures of these prepared glasses obtained from DTA curves explain modifications taking place in the structure of glass network. The structural changes are explained with the aid of FTIR and Raman studies. The bio active nature of the titled glasses is evident from dissociation and pH studies by SEM &EDS of these glasses before and after immersion into SBF.

Catheter fracture with subsequent embolization is a well known but a potentially serious late complication of central venous catheter placement. Central venous catheters are frequently implanted for the purpose of chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition. Most common vein used for the placement of central venous catheter is subclavian vein. According to case reports, catheter placed in subclavian vein is vulnerable for fracture and is often preceded by the "pinch-off sign", first described by Aikten and Minton. It is due to shearing forces between the clavicle and first rib. Broken catheter frequently embolises to Right atrium, Right Ventricle, Inferior vena cava, Pulmonary arteries and rarely into Coronary sinus. Migration to Coronary sinus is very uncommon and only 5 cases are reported in the literature as of now. We are presenting an unusual case where chemoport catheter severed and lodged partly in coronary venous sinus and partly in right ventricle taking a "U "shape. Fragment was successfully retrieved percutaneously using a snare after straightening it with a pigtail catheter. Though majority of patients deny symptoms however, some do have symptoms or complications. Catheter fragment can lead to arrhythmias, thrombosis, infection and perforation. Thrombosis of coronary sinus is a life threatening complication. Regular follow up with Chest x ray may recognize the fracture and embolization much earlier. In almost all cases the migrated portion can be retrieved safely percutaneously without recourse to surgery.

RESUMO

Management of giant intracranial aneurysms presents unique challenges to the neurosurgical team. Various techniques such as adenosine-induced hypotension, rapid ventricular pacing, and inducing deep hypothermia are described in the literature to effect circulatory arrest for the successful obliteration of giant aneurysms. We describe a novel technique of induced hypotension for clipping a giant aneurysm by using an inflatable balloon across the main pulmonary artery with a successful outcome. This technique has not been described earlier in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a vaccine-preventable acute disease. We report the results of a phase 2/3 trial of JENVAC, a Vero cell-derived vaccine developed using an Indian strain of JE virus (JEV). METHODS: JENVAC was administered in 2 doses 28 days apart, and immunogenicity was compared to that from a single dose of SA-14-14-2, the only approved JE vaccine and regimen at the time in India. RESULTS: After both the doses, seroconversion and seroprotection were >90% for JENVAC. For SA-14-14-2, seroconversion and seroprotection were 57.69% and 77.56%, respectively, on day 28 and 39.74% and 60.26%, respectively, on day 56. The geometric mean titers at day 28 and day 56 were 145.04 and 460.53, respectively, for JENVAC and 38.56 and 25.29, respectively, for SA-14-14-2. With a single dose of JENVAC, seroprotection titers lasted at least 12 months in >80% of the subjects. Following receipt of 2 doses, 61.17% of subjects retained seroprotection titers at 24 months, and immunogenicity criteria were higher than that for SA-14-14-2 at 12, 18, and 24 months each. Sera from JENVAC subjects neutralized JEV genotypes I, II, III, and IV equally well. Adverse events were not significantly different between the 2 vaccines. CONCLUSIONS: JENVAC elicits long-lasting, broadly protective immunity. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: CTRI/2011/07/001855.

Barium-gadolinium-titanate (BaGd2 Ti4 O12) powder ceramics doped with rare-earth ions (Eu(3+) and Tb(3+)) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. From the X-ray diffraction spectrum, it was observed that Eu(3+) and Tb(3+):BaGd2 Ti4 O12 powder ceramics are crystallized in the form of an orthorhombic structure. Scanning electron microscopy image shows that the particles are agglomerated and the particle size is about 200 nm. Eu(3+) - and Tb(3+) -doped BaGd2 Ti4 O12 powder ceramics were examined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. Emission spectra of Eu(3+)-doped BaGd2 Ti4 O12 powder ceramics showed bright red emission at 613 nm ((5)D0 →(7)F2) with an excitation wavelength λ(exci) = 408 nm ((7)F0 → (5)D3) and Tb(3+):BaGd2 Ti4 O12 ceramic powder has shown green emission at 534 nm ((5)D4 → (7)F5) with an excitation wavelength λ(exci) = 331 nm (((7)F6 → (5)D1). TL spectra show that Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions affect TL sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the association of osteocalcin with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and assess the role of adiponectin in these relationships. METHODS: This study comprised 98 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic women (51 pre-menopausal and 47 post-menopausal) and 102 age and BMI matched controls (53 pre-menopausal and 49 post-menopausal). Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). RESULTS: Osteocalcin was significantly positively correlated with adiponectin in both pre-menopausal (p = 0.0026) and post-menopausal diabetic women (p = 0.0357). Significant negative association between osteocalcin and HOMA-IR was observed only in pre-menopausal diabetic women (p = 0.0019), but the association was partially reduced (p = 0.0219) after additional adjustment for adiponectin. Adiponectin slightly attenuated the inverse association between osteocalcin and presence of type 2 diabetes in both pre- and post-menopausal women. CONCLUSION: The protective action of osteocalcin against the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in women may be partially mediated through up-regulation of adiponectin secretion.

RESUMO

Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by downward displacement of the tricuspid valve, atrialization of right ventricle, enlarged right atrium with tricuspid regurgitation, or stenosis. It is often associated with atrial septal defect (ASD) or patent foramen ovale with right to left shunt. It has a varied clinical presentation and can manifest as cyanosis, ventricular, or supraventricular arrhythmias and recurrent episodes of congestive heart failure. We describe the anesthetic management of a female patient with Ebstein's anomaly who had right frontal lobe abscess due to paradoxical embolism for decompressive craniotomy.

Direct regeneration from explants without an intervening callus phase has several advantages, including production of true type progenies. Axillary bud explants from 6-month-old sugarcane cultivars Co92061 and Co671 were co-cultivated with Agrobacterium strains LBA4404 and EHA105 that harboured a binary vector pGA492 carrying neomycin phosphotransferase II, phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (bar) and an intron containing beta-glucuronidase (gus-intron) genes in the T-DNA region. A comparison of kanamycin, geneticin and phosphinothricin (PPT) selection showed that PPT (5.0 mg l(-1)) was the most effective selection agent for axillary bud transformation. Repeated proliferation of shoots in the selection medium eliminated chimeric transformants. Transgenic plants were generated in three different steps: (1) production of putative primary transgenic shoots in Murashige-Skoog (MS) liquid medium with 3.0 mg l(-1) 6-benzyladenine (BA) and 5.0 mg l(-1) PPT, (2) production of secondary transgenic shoots from the primary transgenic shoots by growing them in MS liquid medium with 2.0 mg l(-1) BA, 1.0 mg l(-1) kinetin (Kin), 0.5 mg l(-1) alpha-napthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 5.0 mg l(-1) PPT for 3 weeks, followed by five more cycles of shoot proliferation and selection under same conditions, and (3) rooting of transgenic shoots on half-strength MS liquid medium with 0.5 mg l(-1) NAA and 5.0 mg l(-1) PPT. About 90% of the regenerated shoots rooted and 80% of them survived during acclimatisation in greenhouse. Transformation was confirmed by a histochemical beta-glucuronidase (GUS) assay and PCR amplification of the bar gene. Southern blot analysis indicated integration of the bar gene in two genomic locations in the majority of transformants. Transformation efficiency was influenced by the co-cultivation period, addition of the phenolic compound acetosyringone and the Agrobacterium strain. A 3-day co-cultivation with 50 micro M acetosyringone considerably increased the transformation efficiency. Agrobacterium strain EHA105 was more effective, producing twice the number of transgenic shoots than strain LBA4404 in both Co92061 and Co671 cultivars. Depending on the variety, 50-60% of the transgenic plants sprayed with BASTA (60 g l(-1) glufosinate) grew without any herbicide damage under greenhouse conditions. These results show that, with this protocol, generation and multiplication of transgenic shoots can be achieved in about 5 months with transformation efficiencies as high as 50%.

The silk glands of mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori are endoreplicating tissues in which the genomic DNA undergoes multiple rounds of replication without mitosis and nuclear division. In the absence of normal mitotic division, the cell cycle essentially alternates between the G1 and S phases. Cyclin E is crucial for the G1/S transition in both mitotic and endoreplicating cycles. We have cloned and characterized cyclin E (cyclin box) from B. mori, which is nearly identical to the Drosophila cyclin E box except for an insertion of 21 amino acids. Two distinct cyclin E transcripts (1.7 and 2.1 kb) were detected in the silk-gland cells of B. mori and in the B. mori-derived embryonic cell line, BmN. Using anti Cyclin E antibodies two protein bands of 52 and 44kDa were detected in silk glands and BmN cells at comparable levels. Both BmN- and the silk-gland cells showed the presence of the interacting kinase Cdk2. Transcripts of the mitotic cyclin, cyclin B, were barely detectable in the endoreplicating silk-gland cells and amounted to only 4-7% of that seen in the mitotically dividing BmN cells. The near absence of cyclin B transcripts and the abundant expression of cyclin E in the silk glands correlate well with the alternation of only G1 and S phases without the intervening mitosis in these cells.
