RESUMO

Within this work, we demonstrate in-situ alignment of the easy axis single-crystal magnetic particles inside a polymer matrix using fused filament fabrication. Two different magnetic materials are investigated: (i) Strontium hexaferrite inside a PA6 matrix, fill grade: 49 vol% and (ii) Samarium iron nitride inside a PA12 matrix, fill grade: 44 vol%. In the presence of the external alignment field, the strontium hexaferrite particles inside the PA6 matrix can be well aligned with a ratio of remnant magnetization to saturation magnetization in an easy axis of 0.7. No significant alignment for samarium iron nitride could be achieved. The results show the feasibility to fabricate magnets with arbitrary and locally defined easy axis using fused filament fabrication since the permanent magnets (or alternatively an electromagnet) can be mounted on a rotatable platform.

RESUMO

We report two effects that lead to a significant reduction of the switching field distribution in exchange spring media. The first effect relies on a subtle mechanism of the interplay between exchange coupling between soft and hard layers and anisotropy that allows significant reduction of the switching field distribution in exchange spring media. This effect reduces the switching field distribution by about 30% compared to single-phase media. A second effect is that due to the improved thermal stability of exchange spring media over single-phase media, the jitter due to thermal fluctuation is significantly smaller for exchange spring media than for single-phase media. The influence of this overall improved switching field distribution on the transition jitter in granular recording and the bit error rate in bit-patterned magnetic recording is discussed. The transition jitter in granular recording for a distribution of Khard values of 3% in the hard layer, taking into account thermal fluctuations during recording, is estimated to be a = 0.78 nm, which is similar to the best reported calculated jitter in optimized heat-assisted recording media.

RESUMO

We derive a hierarchy of stochastic evolution equations for pure states (quantum trajectories) for open quantum system dynamics with non-Markovian structured environments. This hierarchy of pure states (HOPS) is generally applicable and provides the exact reduced density operator as an ensemble average over normalized states. The corresponding nonlinear equations are presented. We demonstrate that HOPS provides an efficient theoretical tool and apply it to the spin-boson model, the calculation of absorption spectra of molecular aggregates, and energy transfer in a photosynthetic pigment-protein complex.

RESUMO

Magnetization reversal processes in Co/Pt multilayers prepared on nanoperforated templates are probed by magnetization relaxation measurements. The signature of pinning controlled domain wall movement as expected for percolated media is identified. This contrasts with the nucleation-type reversal mechanism of a Co/Pt reference film prepared on a smooth substrate. A zero field energy barrier of 93kBT is determined by fluctuation field measurements and is elucidated by micromagnetic calculations using the nudged elastic band method. This value is sufficiently large to qualify the material as a promising percolated medium.

RESUMO

We present a study on the magnetization reversal in Co/Pt multilayer films with an out-of-plane easy axis of magnetization deposited onto substrates with densely distributed perforations with an average period as small as 34 nm. Deposition of magnetic Co/Pt multilayers onto the nanoperforated surface results in an array of magnetic nanodots surrounded by a continuous magnetic film. Following the evolution of the magnetic domain pattern in the system, we suggest that domain walls are pinned on structural inhomogeneities given by the underlying nanoperforated template. Furthermore, a series of micromagnetic simulations was performed in order to understand the modification of the pinning strength of domain walls due to the magnetic interaction between nanodots and the surrounding film. The results of the simulations show that magnetic exchange coupling between the nanodots and the surrounding film strongly influences the pinning behavior of the magnetic domain walls which can be optimized to provide maximal pinning.

RESUMO

The deposition of Co/Pd multilayer films onto self-assembled particle arrays with particle sizes down to 50 nm leads to pronounced curvature-induced physical properties. Unlike in classical nanosystems, the so-formed single caps on top of the spherical particles exhibit a radial symmetric anisotropy orientation across their surface. Its impact on the magnetization reversal process was analyzed experimentally for different particle sizes and compared to micromagnetic simulations, offering new opportunities in the functionalization of magnetic nanostructures.

RESUMO

In ambient field studies conducted with aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS), individual particle mass spectra commonly contain ion peaks at mass/charge (m/z) 86, 101, 102, and 118. Particles with mass spectra containing these peaks show a strong correlation with high relative humidity and low temperatures. In an effort to identify these peaks, a series of smog chamber studies were conducted probing the chemistry of secondary and tertiary alkylamines. Specifically, in separate studies, trimethylamine, di- and triethylamine, and di- and tripropylamine were reacted in a 1 m3 Teflon outdoor smog chamber with naturally occurring levels of gas phase oxidants in ambient air. The aerodynamic sizes and individual mass spectra of the resulting aerosol particles were acquired continuously using aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS). Both oxidation and acid-base reactions between amines and acids commonly present in the atmosphere (i.e., nitric and sulfuric acid) appear to play roles in the formation and chemistry of organic nitrogen-containing particle phase species. Ion peaks in the individual particle mass spectra indicate the presence of alkyl ammonium salts, as well as other tentatively identified organic N-containing compounds formed by oxidation processes. Also, for the first time, tertiary alkylamine-N-oxides have been identified as alkylamine oxidation products in the aerosol particle phase. Smog chamber reactions involving triethylamine produce ATOFMS mass spectra with similar ion peak combinations as those observed in the spectra of particles commonly detected in ambient and vehicular source characterization studies. The results of this study suggest that amine chemistry involving gas-to-particle conversion and photooxidation processes may play a significant role in particle formation in regions with high amine concentrations.

RESUMO

Naloxone has recently been reported to be of benefit in the treatment of central nervous system ischemia. To study the effect of naloxone in an experimental stroke model, we subjected 40 awake monkeys to middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion 2 weeks after the placement of a MCA ligature by a transorbital technique. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was monitored with stereotactically placed H2 electrodes, and the neurological course was serially recorded. Infarct size was determined 2 weeks after MCA occlusion. Twenty animals served as control and received no naloxone; 10 of these underwent permanent occlusion, and 10 underwent 4-hour MCA occlusion. In 25 treatment animals, naloxone was administered in three different intravenous dosages: (a) naloxone, 2-mg/kg bolus 20 minutes postocclusion and 2 mg/kg/hour X 4 hours, in 10 animals with permanent MCA occlusion; (b) naloxone, 10-mg/kg bolus 20 minutes postocclusion and 10 mg/kg/hour X 4 hours, in 10 animals with 4-hour MCA occlusion; and (c) naloxone, 20-mg/kg bolus, in 5 animals with various neurological deficits. MCA occlusion typically produced a moderate deficit: hemiparesis, hemianopsia, and facial paresis. In most instances, naloxone in the 2- and 10-mg/kg dose regimens produced little or no change in the neurological function. CBF decreased after MCA occlusion and was unaffected by naloxone in most cases. Infarct size was not significantly different between the control and treated groups. However, the 20-mg/kg dose consistently produced a nonfunctional, transient increase in total body motor tone in normal and hemiparetic animals. Naloxone did not significantly improve useful neurological function, CBF, or infarct size in an experimental primate stroke model.

RESUMO

The effect of mannitol on focal cerebral ischemia in cynomolgus monkeys was studied. After the implantation of a snare ligature about the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) and of deep electrodes for measurement of cerebral blood flow, unanesthetized animals underwent 4-hour MCA occlusion. Ten monkeys were untreated, and 12 animals received mannitol (1.2 g/kg i.v.) 20 minutes after occlusion. The preocclusion and postocclusion deep hemispheric cerebral blood flows (mean CBFs) were similar in the treated and untreated groups. Occlusion produced an average decrease in flow of about 50% in both groups. In the mannitol-treated group the mean CBF of 30.0 fell to 15.8 ml/100 g/minute, and in the untreated group the mean CBF of 29.5 fell to 12.5 ml/100 g/minute. Several animals showed increased CBF after mannitol treatment, and there was an average 21% increase in CBF in the mannitol group after treatment, but this was not a statistically significant difference from the untreated group. With regard to clinical status, there was no significant difference between the mannitol group and the untreated group after MCA occlusion. In individual animals, mannitol treatment caused no significant improvement. Two weeks after occlusion, brains were evaluated for infarct size; there was no significant difference between the mannitol and the untreated groups. In this study, treatment with mannitol (1.2 g/kg) 20 minutes after MCA occlusion failed to modify significantly the mean hemispheric CBF, clinical status, or the pathological effects of 4-hour focal cerebral ischemia.
