RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of commercial mouth rinses on color, roughness, sorption (SR), and solubility (SL) of resin composites. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Disc-shaped specimens (stage I: 6 mm × 2 mm; stage II: 10 mm × 1.5 mm) were made from the following resin composites (n=10): conventional nanofilled (Filtek Z350XT, 3M Oral Care), conventional nanohybrid (Luna, SDI), bulk-fill nanofilled (Filtek One Bulk-Fill, 3M Oral Care), and bulk-fill nanohybrid (Aura Bulk-Fill, SDI) exposed to distilled water (control), blue mouth rinse without alcohol (Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint, Colgate-Palmolive), or blue mouth rinse with alcohol and essential oil (Listerine Tartar Control, Johnson & Johnson). In stage I, tests were performed at the baseline, and after the immersion in solution time points to evaluate coordinates of the CIEL*a*b* system (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*), general color change (ΔEab, ΔE00, and ΔSGU), and surface roughness (Ra). In stage II, SR and SL were evaluated (ISO 4049:2019) after immersion in the solutions for 7 days. The results were evaluated by generalized linear models (Ra, SR), Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests (color, SL), with α = 0.05. RESULTS: There were no significative differences for Ra between the solutions. Both mouth rinses promoted significantly negative ΔL* (Luna), Δa* (Filtek One Bulk-fill), and Δb* (all materials except conventional nanofilled resin composite). Mouth rinse without alcohol promoted significantly negative Δa* on all resin composites tested. Both mouth rinses promoted higher ΔEab and ΔE00 for bulk-fill resin composites compared to control. Mouth rinse with alcohol caused higher ΔSGU for bulk-fill nanofilled resin composite. It also promoted greater SR in all the resin composites compared with mouth rinse without alcohol and higher SR in nanohybrid resin composites compared with control. Both mouth rinses promoted higher SL values in Luna and differed significantly from control. CONCLUSIONS: The physical properties were manufacturer dependent and mediated by mouth rinses. The mouth rinses promoted color changes in the resin composites, pointing out that bulk-fill resin composites were more affected by these effects, especially when the mouth rinse contained essential oil and alcohol.

The aim of this in vitro study was to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate the microleakage of Class II cavities restored with a methacrylate-based composite (Filtek Z250, 3M ESPE) or silorane-based composite (Filtek LS, 3M ESPE), varying the application of an intermediary base, using a low-viscosity composite resin (Filtek Z350 Flow, 3M ESPE) or resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) (Vitrebond, 3M ESPE) and no intermediary base (control groups). Sixty cavities were prepared on the proximal surfaces of bovine teeth and were randomly divided according to the experimental groups (n=10). Following the restorative procedures and thermocycling, the samples were immersed in methylene blue for two hours. The qualitative evaluation was made using a stereomicroscope, whereby two observers analyzed the infiltration level of the dye within the tooth/filling. Microleakage scores among the groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney test (p≤0.05). The samples were then ground and the powder was prepared for quantitative analysis in an absorbance spectrophotometer. The results were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance and the Tukey test (p≤0.05). Results from the quantitative analysis showed that LS presented higher values of microleakage than did Z250. There was a significant difference between both composites concerning the intermediary materials, with the lowest values obtained using RMGIC as an intermediary base. Results from the qualitative analysis showed that there were no statistically significant differences between composites; however, there were significant differences for both composites concerning the intermediary materials, with the lowest values obtained using RMGIC as an intermediary. It is possible to conclude that using RMGIC as an intermediary base provided lower microleakage, indicating better sealing of the tooth-restoration interface.

Germinal-vesicle-breakdown (GVBD) was induced if a 132,000-g supernatant of Tetrahymena thermophila homogenates was injected into Xenopus oocytes. Using this induction of GVBD as a bioassay system, a GVBD-inducing substance was purified from the Tetrahymena by ultra-filtration, liquid chromatography, and electroelution from a band on native-PAGE gel. Proteins eluted from the single band on the native-PAGE gel induced GVBD in the absence of oocyte protein synthesis. This band resolved into two bands on SDS-PAGE: 60 and 112 kDa. The 60 kDa protein was the active fraction inducing GVBD. Immunoprecipitation of the 60 kDa protein prevented the GVBD-inducing activity, supporting the conclusion that the 60 kDa protein is the GVBD-inducing substance. An immunoblot with anti-60 kDa monoclonal antibody and PSTAIR antibody showed that p13suc1-beads could remove cdc2 homologues from T. thermophila supernatant but could not remove the GVBD-inducing activity. The 60-kDa protein appeared at the same time as micronuclear division and disappeared at the beginning of the macronuclear division during synchronous cell division. The cyclic appearance of the 60-kDa protein in the T. thermophila cell cycle suggests that this protein has a cell cycle function.

Nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate, CAS 55-63-0, NTG) administered with an oral spray may be more effective in relieving anginal pain than sublingual tablets especially when the patient's mouth is dry. In this study, the effect of a NTG oral spray (Myocor Spray) on exercise-induced angina was compared with that of a sublingual tablet in relation to the oral dryness. In 17 patients with effort angina, graded bicycle exercise was performed twice at an interval of one week. Exercise was discontinued upon the onset of moderate anginal pain. Immediately after exercise, the oral dryness was evaluated by touching the tip of the tongue with a blotting paper for a moment. Then, 0.3 mg of NTG was administered by either a squirt of spray or a sublingual tablet in a randomized crossover fashion. Exercise results were reproducible between two exercise tests. According to the extent of the wet area of the blotting paper, the subjects were divided into two groups. In 7 patients of the wet group, the remission times of chest pain and ST segment depression were not significantly different by the formulation of NTG. In 10 patients of the dry group, however, both chest pain and ST depression more rapidly recovered with use of the oral spray (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05, respectively). These results strongly suggest that the NTG oral spray is superior to the sublingual tablet in relieving anginal attacks, when the oral wetness is decreased.

RESUMO

The alkaloid composition of regenerated plants from DUBOISIA MYOPOROIDES R. Br. (Solanaceae) callus was determined at various stages of development. Anabasine, nornicotine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine, which are main alkaloids in leaves of the mother plant, were analysed. The main alkaloids were not detected in the leaves of regenerated plantlets at the early stage of development, but eventually the alkaloid spectrum approached that of the mother plant at the later stage; on the way, various alkaloid spectra were found. Qualitative and quantitative differences between regenerated plantlets and seedlings with respect to alkaloid distribution were discussed.

The anticancer drugs, like 5-Fluorouracil, which are believed to interfere with enzyme protein synthesis in the exocrine cells of pancreas were administered intravenously to fifteen patients with various pancreatic diseases. The improvement of clinical symptoms and the diminution of serum and urinary amylase levels were observed in four cases with acute pancreatitis and two cases with chronic relapsing pancreatitis. The postoperative complications, namely the formation of pancreatic fistula and the rupture of pancreaticojejunostomy, or the aggravation of concomitant pancreatitis were not observed in three cases with benign surgical pancreatic diseases and six cases with pancreatic carcinoma. Furthermore, the diminution of amylase and protein output of pancreatic juice from canulae inserted into pancreatic ducts were observed.
