RESUMO

Edible films are thin films frequently manufactured using natural bioresources and are employed in food packaging to safeguard food quality. This research prepared edible films from renewable biomass consisting of Belitung taro tuber starch (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) and incorporated sorbitol as a plasticizer, carboxymethyl cellulose as a reinforcing agent, and moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera) as an antioxidant. The physicochemical characteristics of the resulting edible films were examined. The most favorable treatment was identified in an edible film containing 3% (v/v based on the total volume of 100 mL) of moringa leaf extract. This exhibited a tensile strength of 6.86 N/mm2, percent elongation of 73.71%, elasticity of 9.37×10-3 kgf/mm2, water absorption of 349.03%, solubility of 93.18%, and water vapor transmission speed of 3.18 g/h m2. Its shelf life was five days at ambient temperature. The edible film was found to have 135.074 ppm of half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) based on the antioxidant analysis of inhibition concentration (IC50) value measurements, and was classified as having moderate antioxidant activity. Additionally, the biodegradability assessment revealed that the edible films degraded within 14 days. Based on this data, it can be deduced that adding moringa leaf extract enhances the physicochemical and functional characteristics of the film. These edible films can be used as substitutes for nonrenewable and nonbiodegradable packaging materials.

RESUMO

The remarkable optical properties and strong biocompatibility of carbon dots make them highly promising for applications in biochemical sensing and environmental testing. These carbon dots possess a surface that is easily modifiable. In this study, carbon dots have been successfully synthesized and modified by the addition of N and B dopants using the microwave method, along with the functionalization of their surface functional groups with bovine serum albumin (BSA). The maximum fluorescence intensity of N, B-CDs is observed at 462 nm when excited at a wavelength of 352 nm. N, B-CDs have a spherical size with a diameter ranging from 2 to 6 nm, confirmed by UV-Vis absorption spectra and the presence of functional groups in the FT-IR absorption patterns. BSA-functionalized N, B-CDs as the fluorescent probe demonstrate great potential as a sensor for Pb(II) ions in water, with a very low detection limit of 1.05 µg/L. This research could contribute to the development of fluorescence nanosensors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long coronavirus disease (COVID) is a complex and multifaceted health condition with a range of severe symptoms that can last for weeks or even months after the acute phase of the illness has passed. Employing social network analysis (SNA) can rapidly provide significant health information to communities related to long COVID. This study aimed to identify the key themes, most influential users, and overall sentiments in the Twitter discourse on long COVID. METHODS: Data were collected from a Twitter search with the specific keywords "long COVID" from December 1, 2022, to February 22, 2023, using NodeXL Pro. Visualizations, including network graphs and key influencers, were created using Gephi, and sentiment analysis was conducted with Azure Machine. RESULTS: In total, 119,185 tweets from 94325 users were related to long COVID. Top influencers include medical professionals, researchers, journalists, and public figures, with news media platforms as primary information sources; the most common hashtag was #longCOVID, indicating that it is a significant issue of concern among the Twitter community. In the sentiment analysis, most tweets were negative. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of critically evaluating information shared by influential users and seeking out multiple sources of information when making health-related decisions. In addition, it emphasizes the value of examining social media conversations to understand public discourse on long COVID and suggests that future researchers could explore the role of social media in shaping public perceptions and behaviors related to health issues. Strategies for enhancing scientific journal engagement and influence in online discussions are discussed as well.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The pandemic increased pressure on healthcare services and forced limited care in all health facilities to ensure the care of all patients. Telepharmacy appears as an alternative to the remote pharmacy practice approach through information and communication technologies, but there are no comprehensive tools to measure pharmacists' knowledge, perception, and readiness to implement telepharmacy. This study developed and validated a questionnaire version of the Knowledge, Perceptions, and Readiness of Telepharmacy (KPR-TP) for pharmacists. METHODS: The KPR-TP assessed three domains: knowledge, perception, and readiness. Its factor structure, reliability, and validity were assessed using 7730 pharmacists from 34 Indonesian provinces. The validity of the model's three-factor structure was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach's alpha and composite reliability were used to validate the consistency of our factors, whereas convergent and discriminant validity established significant relationships between them. RESULTS: The goodness-of-fit index indicated that the model was economical and reasonable. Furthermore, the correlation between the three domains revealed a significant positive relationship. KRP-TP is a viable instrument for assessing pharmacists' perceptions of telepharmacy in Indonesia. CONCLUSION: Overall, we discovered that our questionnaire contains critical constructs for assessing a pharmacist's knowledge, perception, and level of readiness to implement telepharmacy. This study will help pharmacists identify appropriate strategies for skill improvement.

RESUMO

Traumatic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability in young adults. Previous studies have suggested that neuroinflammatory process involves the overexpression of interleukin 6 (IL-6); however, data on the predictive ability of IL-6 is limited and conflicting in traumatic head injury patients. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of plasma IL-6 as a predictor of outcome in head injury patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted between June and December 2020 among traumatic head injury patients admitted to Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Demographic, clinical data, and IL-6 level were collected and measured on admission. The outcome was assessed by the Glasgow outcome scale extended (GOSE) in the first- and third-month of post-injury. A total of 50 traumatic brain injury patients were recruited of which 54% were male, 64% had mild head injury, 82% had leukocytosis, and 60% had non-bleeding head CT scan. The mean of IL-6 level was 79.32 pg/mL while the GOSE scores ranged from 1 (death) to 8 (upper good recovery). Early IL-6 level (<24 hours post-injury) was significantly correlated with worse outcome in traumatic head injury, though the correlation strength was moderate (p<0.001; r=-0.42). As a predictor, IL-6 yielded the area under curve (AUC) value of 93.5% (p<0.001) and a cut-off point of 46.33 pg/mL. The sensitivity and specificity of this predictor were 87.5% and 95.24%, respectively. In conclusion, early IL-6 level can be used as a predictor for traumatic head injury. Nevertheless, further multi-center study with a bigger sample size is needed to confirm this finding.

RESUMO

A simple and sensitive colorimetric sensor for nickel(II) ions has been successfully prepared by immobilizing α-furil dioxime reagent in the sol-gel matrix with a solid supporting filter paper medium. The sensor was developed using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursors with 4 days aging time, the mole ratio of water: precursor was 4:1, and reagent concentration at 0.10%. The sensor was quantified by utilizing the Red (R), Green (G), and Blue (B) values of the colors that were successfully displayed after the detection process. The RGB value is confirmed by the Euclidean Distance (ED) equation to determine the optimum conditions. There was no observed degree of leaching in plain sight, and the result of leaching investigation by the double dyeing method did not show any significant change. The linear range was 0.10 to 2.8 ppm with an R2 of 0.9964. The values of LOD and LOQ were 0.1 ppm and 0.4 ppm, respectively. In addition, the sensor was free from interfering species and had a percent recovery around 90 to 110%.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microplastics on Spirulina sp., the pigment phycocyanin in Spirulina sp., and the effect of Spirulina sp. on the degradation of PE and PP plastic. The interaction of Spirulina sp. with microplstic (PE and PP) was conducted by adding the microplastic (500 mg/500 mL, with a size of 0.5-1 mm2) to microalgae culture. The optical density was measured for 30 days to determine the growth of Spirulina sp. Harvesting was performed to obtain dry Spirulina sp biomass. Phycocyanin was obtained through extraction by mixing 0.1 g dry Spirulina sp. biomass with 25 ml of 1% CaCl2 in an ultrasonic water bath at 50 kHz, 300 W at 30 °C for 15 min. The results showed that the growth rate of Spirulina sp significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with treatment of PE (SP + PE) (0.0228/day) and PP (Sp + PP) (0.0221/day), compared to the control (Sp-Control) (0.0312/day). Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses of Spirulina sp. biomass with the addition of PE and PP revealed surface damage of Spirulina sp. cells and loss of carboxyl groups from proteins in Spirulina sp. at wavelengths of 1397-1450 cm-1. In addition, Spirulina sp. had decreased the intensity of amine and amide groups from proteins at wavelengths of 3280, 1637, and 1537 cm-1 in the microplastic treatment. The phycocyanin yield and protein content in Spirulina sp. control were 19.69% and 0.147%, respectively, which decreased by 10.7% and 0.121%, respectively, with PE treatment and by 8.7% and 0.108%, respectively, with PP treatment. Moreover, the investigation of PE and PP treated by Spirulina sp showed more significant changes of functional group indicated by the formation of hydroxyl (3286 cm-1), carbonyl (1700 cm-1), ester (1750 cm-1) and primary alcohol (1085 cm-1). The results of the EDX microplastic analysis showed a decrease in carbon in PE (1.62%) and PP (1.08%). These FTIR and EDX analysis also proved that microplastic has experienced degradation when treated by Spirulina sp cell culture.

RESUMO

Highly sensitive solid-phase colorimetry for nickel ion was demonstrated using an improved reflection colorimeter equipped with a coaxial optical-fiber cable. The nickel complex with α-furil dioxime was collected on a small-size membrane filter embedded in a disposable syringe filter unit. The leading edge of the optical-fiber cable was connected to the syringe filter unit via a Luer-lock fitting, and the color intensity of the sample on the filter was evaluated accurately. The detection limit was 0.8 ng in 2.5 mL of the complex solution (0.3 µg L-1). This improved configuration is applicable to highly sensitive on-site analysis without expensive instruments nor high laboratory skills.

RESUMO

Lime is one of the most commonly consumed medicinal plants in Indonesia, which must be dried to preserve its quality, but mostly by using traditional, ineffective drying method. Therefore, this study aims to investigate lime drying process a hybrid solar drying method. The hybrid solar dryer consisted of a solar dryer and Liquefied Petroleum Gas as the supplementary heater. The drying process was conducted until there was no significant weight decrease, with the drying temperature of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C. Thin-layer modeling and quality analysis were also conducted. The experimental results indicated that 5 h was required to sufficiently dry the lime at 80 °C, while drying at 40 °C took 24 h to finish. The drying rate curve of lime suggested that lime drying mostly happened during the falling-rate period. Moreover, the average efficiency of the hybrid solar dryer ranged from 5.36% to 38.61%, which increased with temperature. From the 10 thin-layer drying models used, the Wang and Singh model was the most suitable to describe the drying behavior of lime. The effective diffusivity values of the limes and the activation energy value during hybrid solar drying were within their respective acceptable range for agricultural products. However, as the drying temperature was increased from 40 to 80 °C, the total phenolic content and vitamin C content decreased, from 87.3 to 27.8 mg GAE/100 g dry limes and 0.118 to 0.015 ppm, respectively. It can be concluded that hybrid solar dryer is able to sufficiently dry the lime, with acceptable drying time and dryer efficiency, although using high drying temperature will decrease the quality of dried lime. Further modifications and improvements to the hybrid solar dryer are required to maximize the quality of dried lime while still maintaining fast and effective drying process.
