Context: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is chronic, scarring disease of the oral cavity. Cytokines and growth factors produced by inflammatory cells play a major role in its pathogenesis. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) application, which has an anti-inflammatory, was used to determine the improvement in mouth opening. Aims: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of laser photobiomodulation (PBM) in OSMF treatment. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients who were diagnosed with OSMF after obtaining consent form and ethical clearance were included. LLLT was applied for 4 cycles for 15 s each in the left and right buccal mucosa. Therapy was done on day 0, 3, 7, and 15 and measurements were done immediately after each LLLT application. Patients were recalled after 1, 3, and 6 months from the commencement of the therapy for follow-up measurements. Results: The mean increase in mouth opening following application of LLLT from day 0 to day 15 was 9.91 ± 3.34, and day 1-6 months was 14.29 ± 6.82, which was statistically significant. Conclusions: The study shows significant improvements in the mouth opening of the OSMF patient during treatment and postoperatively. Thus, our study confirms LLLT can be used as one of the modality in OSMF management.

Quantum dots have now become the most important candidates and widely exploited as promising architectures for use as diagnostic and imaging agents in biomedicine and as semiconductors in the electronics industry. This article emphasizes on the aqueous synthesis of water soluble CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots with L-cysteine and mercaptopropionic acid as capping agent and their observed properties have been compared. The biocompatibility of the assynthesized quantum dots have also been analyzed through the cytotoxicity study using MTT assay. The structural, morphological and optical properties of these quantum dots have been examined through X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The capping of L-cysteine and mercaptopropionic acid on the quantum dots has been confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD results demonstrated the formation of hexagonal wurtzite structure for L-cysteine and cubic zinc blende structure for mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots. From the optical measurements, it is observed that there is a considerable increase in the photoluminescence intensity of L-cysteine capped quantum dots than MPA. The HRTEM images revealed the narrow size distribution and in addition, L-cysteine capped quantum dots were found to be more biocompatible than mercaptopropionic acid capped quantum dots which would provide new opportunities for applications in bioimaging and biolabelling.

RESUMO

This article provides summary data regarding tea production in Assam, India. Questionnaires were completed by tea producers and focus group discussions undertaken with tea workers. These data are presented for the four main tea growing regions of the state (Cachar, North Bank, South Bank and Upper Assam). Tables detail tea production characteristics of the tea plantations for both large- (> 10 ha) and small- (< 10 ha) holders. Figures provide supplementary information for research by Biggs et al. [1] regarding fertilizer application, landscape management strategies, healthcare provisioning and educational facilities within plantations, as well as detailing the livelihood dimensions of tea workers. The questions posed to producers are also included. For further context underpinning the research for which these data were collated, see 'The tea landscape of Assam: multi-stakeholder insights into sustainable livelihoods under a changing climate' by Biggs et al. [1].

Antimicrobial peptides (AMP's) protect epithelial surfaces including epididymis against pathogens and play a key role in orchestrating various defensive responses. Recently, we have identified one such AMP, rabbit epididymal hemoglobin-ß subuit (REHbßP) from the epididymal fluid of rabbit, Oryctologus cuniculus. The demonstration of a protective role of REHbßP in epididymal epithelial cells (EPEC's) led us to investigate: (1) the identification of LPS interactive domain in REHbßP, and (2) whether the REHbßP of rabbit origin mediates vaginal cellular immune responses of another species (human). HeLa-S3, human vaginal epithelial cells (hVECs) were exposed to LPS or the LPS-stimulated cells treated with REHbßP or neutral peptide, nREHbßP. Effect of LPS and cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1α) and chemokines (IL-8, MCP-1) levels was determined in the culture supernatants. In response to the LPS, hVECs synthesized these mediators and the levels were significantly higher than controls. This enhancing effect was ameliorated when the LPS-induced hVECs were treated with REHbßP. Similar results were obtained on NF-κB protein and hBD-1 mRNA expression. Confocal microscopy studies revealed that REHbßP attenuated the LPS-induced internalization of E. coli by macrophages. The chemotaxis studies performed using Boyden chamber Transwell assay, which showed elevated migration of U937 cells when the supernatants of LPS-induced hVECs were used, and the effect was inhibited by REHbßP. REHbßP was found to be localized on the acrosome of rabbit spermatozoa, suggesting its role in sperm protection beside sperm function. In conclusion, REHbßP may have the potential to develop as a therapeutic agent for reproductive tract infections (RTI's).
