Anatomy, the study of human structure, is foundational to medicine. Its language has a long history, with contributions from authors hailing from diverse cultures and countries, adhering to various scientific traditions, speaking different languages, and practicing medicine across a wide gamut of specialties. The resultant disparity in terms provides challenges both for students in learning and for interdisciplinary communication. We report here on a user-friendly look-up web site, "AnatomicalTerms.info" that links a Terminologica Anatomica term to alternative terms in usage: synonyms, polysemes, eponyms, homonyms, and terms in other languages. Accompanying open-source definitions are generated with the help of "Definition Machine" software, that supports creating the most concise and accessible definitions for anatomical terms, eschewing superfluous description, thus reducing cognitive load of learners of anatomy looking up terms. AnatomicalTerms.info is a readily accessible online source for both the authoritative and alternatively used terms that can accurately cross-reference and/or disambiguate anatomical structures across disciplinary and cultural divides. As such, it can serve as a useful educational and clinical resource that is also flexibly open to additions and expansion as anatomical and clinical needs dictate.

Ectopic liver tissue is an exceedingly rare anomaly in which the hepatic tissue is present extrahepatic site and has no connection to the true liver. Most cases of ectopic liver tissue were asymptomatic and discovered by an accident during abdominal surgery or autopsy. Case presentation: Case 1 involved a 52-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital due to an abdominal grip in the right hypochondrium and epigastrium for 1 month. The patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. During the gross examination, a well-circumscribed brownish nodule with a smooth outer surface, located at the fundus region was found. Case 2 involved a 40-year-old man with 2 months history of epigastric pain radiating to the right shoulder. Calculus chronic cholecystitis was diagnosed by ultrasound. The patient undergoes elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A gross inspection showed a small nodule attached to the serosa of the gallbladder. Microscopically, both cases revealed ectopic liver tissue. Clinical discussion: Ectopic liver tissue is an uncommon entity that occurs during the embryological development of the liver and can be found below and above the diaphragm, especially the gallbladder. Histologically, it usually has the normal architecture of the liver. Although ectopic liver tissue is an exceptional finding, pathologists should be aware of it because it has a high risk of transformation into malignancy. Conclusion: Hepatic choristoma is a rare failure of embryological liver development. It should be removed when recognized and examined histologically to rule out malignancy.

The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of all comparative studies that evaluated the surgical outcomes between bilateral axillo-breast approach-robotic thyroidectomy (BABA-RT) and transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT). The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were screened until July 2022. The Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies for Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool was used to evaluate study quality. The data were summarized as mean difference (MD) or risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) in a fixed-effects or random-effects model. Five comparative observational studies met the inclusion criteria comprising 923 patients (TORT = 408 and BABA-RT = 515). The study quality varied and included low (n = 4) and moderate (n = 1) risk of bias. There was no significant difference between both groups regarding the mean operative time (MD = 19.98 min, 95% CI [-11.33, 51.28], p = 0.21), mean hospital stay (MD = -0.14 days, 95% CI [-0.66, 0.38], p = 0.60), mean number of retrieved lymph nodes (MD = 0.42, 95% CI [-0.16, 0.99], p = 0.16), and rate of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RR = 0.39, 95% CI [0.13, 1.19], p = 0.10). However, the TORT group had significantly reduced mean postoperative pain score (MD = -0.39, 95% CI [-0.51, -0.26], p < 0.001) and lower rate of hypocalcemia (RR = 0.08, 95% CI [0.02, 0.26], p < 0.001) than the BABA-RT group. TORT and BABA-RT have comparable surgical outcomes. Both methods are largely safe and effective when patients are carefully chosen. However, TORT appears to offer better results regarding postoperative pain and hypocalcemia. Further clinical trials with extended follow-up periods are needed to confirm our findings.

Procedures involving the small saphenous vein (SSV) can result in sural nerve (SN) damage due to the proximity of the two structures. The relationship between the SN and SSV has previously been described in cadaveric studies with limited scope on surface landmarks. This study investigates the relationship between the SN and SSV in vivo through ultrasound. Transverse/short-axis ultrasound scans of 128 legs (64 healthy participants) were taken by a single observer using a GE Logiq e ultrasound system with a 5-13 Hz linear transducer (GE Logiq 12L-RS). The SN was identified and traced from the lateral malleolus to the popliteal fossa noting its course and proximity to the SSV. The distance between the SN and SSV was measured at points representing the distal 50% and 25% of the total leg length (the distance between the medial tibial condyle and the inferior edge of the medial malleolus). The SN and SSV were visualized in all participants regardless of BMI and atypical anatomical relationship were noted in 20.3%. The SN pierced the fascia in the distal 25.9% ± 5.3% of the total leg length. The distance between the SN and SSV was 4.06 ± 1.8 mm and 3.4 ± 1.4 mm in the distal 50% and 25% points of the total leg length, respectively. There was no significant effect of sex or body side. The SSV is a viable option for multiple vein harvest. Ultrasound visualization can be a beneficial tool for delineating variations of the SN in relation to SSV prior to surgery. Clin. Protocol advocates the use of rigid cervical collars (RCCs) in head trauma patients as they are at risk of concomitant cervical spine injury. Literature has shown RCCs to be a potential cause of venous outflow obstruction, changing internal jugular vein (IJV) cross-sectional area (CSA), and raising intracranial pressure (ICP). This study aims to investigate the effects of applying a RCC, for a period of four hours, on the dimensions of the IJV, in healthy participants. Seventeen participants (nine male, eight female) took part in this study. Circumference and CSAs of the IJV were measured bilaterally by a single observer using a GE LOGIQ e ultrasound system. Measurements were taken pre-RCC application, immediately after, every hour over four hours, and five minutes postcollar removal. The CSA of the IJV was 8.3 ±6.0 mm2 pre-RCC application. The CSA of the IJV doubled (18.92 ±10.55 mm2 ) after four hours and decreased back to 9.36 ±6.8 mm2 five minutes postcollar removal. The circumference of the IJV was 17.29 ±6.03 mm pre-RCC application, increasing to 20.34 ±5.59 mm by the end of the fourth hour and returning to 16.14 ±5.16 mm five minutes postcollar removal. Related-samples Friedman's ANOVA test showed statistically significant differences for both left and right CSAs and circumferences of the IJV measured across the four hours (P-value<0.05). Ultrasound assessment of CSA of the IJV may correlate with changes in ICP. Further studies may provide insight into the effects of collar design, and guide future trauma protocol to minimize intracranial pressure fluctuations. Clin. The ulnar nerve (UN) was classically described as supplying most of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, and the cutaneous innervation of the ulnar one and half digits, by dividing into superficial sensory and deep motor branches in Guyon's canal. Variations of this pattern have been reported in the literature. This study investigated the cutaneous distribution of the UN in the palm following the dissection of 144 cadaveric hands. The UN was examined and the distances from branching points of the superficial branch to the proximal edge of the pisiform were measured. The UN bifurcated (80.4%) into one deep trunk and one superficial trunk, which further divided distally into the proper digital (PDN) and common digital (CDN) nerves or trifurcated (19.6%) into one deep trunk, a PDN and a CDN in Guyon's canal. It received fibers from the median nerve in four cases and from the dorsal branch of the UN in six cases. A classification scheme based on the nerves contributing to the sensory innervation of the ulnar side of the palm was suggested. Understanding the cutaneous distribution of the UN in the palm and appreciating possible communicating branches can help clinicians to assess hand pathologies better and avoid injuries during surgical interventions.

The sensory distribution in the dorsum of the hand was investigated in 150 formalin-fixed hands with the aim of outlining the most common innervation pattern of the superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN), dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve (DBUN) and the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LABCN). Although variable, the most common pattern found was SBRN innervation to the dorsal surface of the lateral 2½ digits and DBUN innervation to the dorsal surface of the medial 2½ digits. Dual innervation due to communicating branches or nerves overlapping was found in 41 cases. All-radial supply to the dorsum of the hand was found in ten cases. The LABCN was closely associated, and occasionally overlapped, with the SBRN. There were significant differences in the sensory distribution of the dorsum of the right and left hands of the same cadaver. The sensory distribution in the dorsum of the hand is variable; however, understanding the most common innervation pattern and appreciating the possible variations to this pattern is important to avoid errors in interpretation of conduction velocity studies, misdiagnosis of nerve pathology signs and symptoms and inappropriate treatments.
