RESUMO

AIM: We aimed to investigate the changes in the self-efficacy of patients with breast cancer (BC) during adjuvant chemotherapy. DESIGN: A longitudinal study was conducted. METHODS: One hundred thirty patients with BC who underwent postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy at a medical centre in northern Taiwan were evaluated using self-efficacy survey tools before the first (T1), second (T2) and last (T3) cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. The independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient and generalized estimating equation were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The self-efficacy measures of patients with BC were significantly higher at both T2 and T3 than at T1 (p < 0.001). Religious beliefs and changes in self-efficacy showed a significant correlation (p = 0.04). These findings will facilitate timely interventional measures to improve self-efficacy in patients with maladaptive behaviours, alleviate psychological distress and reduce the risk of future disease recurrence.

RESUMO

This study analyzes the association between social support and depression symptoms of inpatients with major depressive disorder. A total of 160 inpatients were recruited from the acute psychiatric ward of a medical center in northern Taiwan between July 1, 2015, and December 31, 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple linear regression and multiple linear regression. Our results reveal that patient depression level is significantly associated with gender, age, marital status, education, occupation and number of admissions due to depression. Social support is significantly associated with marital status and number of admissions due to depression. The depression symptoms of the patients were significantly and negatively associated with overall perceived social support and perceived social support from family, friends and a significant other. These results could serve as a reference for the clinical practice of clinical specialists and argue for the inclusion of social support as an intervention for patients with depression.

RESUMO

Postpartum depression has become an important topic of concern in recent years. However, very few studies on the causes of postpartum depression exist, and the effects of prenatal sleep disorders on the development of postpartum depression among pregnant women have not been elucidated. This study aimed to understand the association between prenatal sleep disorders and postpartum depression. The National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan (between 2000 and 2010) was used to assess the effects of prenatal sleep disorder on the risk of postpartum depression using Cox regression analyses. Prenatal sleep disorder in pregnant women increased the risk of developing postpartum depression (the risk in the sleep disorder cases was 5.359-fold increased compared with control cases). In addition, regardless of postpartum week (≤ 6 weeks, 6-12 weeks, or > 12weeks), the risk of developing postpartum depression in pregnant women with prenatal sleep disorders were increased, by 5.461-fold (P < 0.001), 3.490-fold (P = 0.010), and 3.416-fold (P = 0.015), respectively, compared with pregnant women without sleep disorders. Pregnant women with prenatal sleep disorders exhibited increased risks of developing postpartum depression. For pregnant women with prenatal sleep disorder, postpartum intervention measures should be provided as early as possible to reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression.

RESUMO

The study purpose was to examine the validities and reliabilities of the Chinese-versions Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale (Attitudes Scale) and Caregiving Behaviors Scale for End-of-Life Patients and Families (Behaviors Scale). The scales were tested in a convenience sample of 318 nurses with ≥6 months work experience at three hospitals. Cronbach's alphas of the Attitudes and Behaviors Scales were .90 and .96, respectively. Each scale had Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin index >.85 and Bartlett's test of sphericity >4000 ( p < .001). Attitudes Scale loaded on three factors: respecting and caring for dying patients and families, avoiding care of the dying, and involving patients and families in end-of-life care. The Behaviors Scale loaded on two factors: supporting dying patients and families, and helping families cope with grief. Factor loadings for both scales were ≥.49. Both Attitudes and Behaviors Scales are reliable and valid for evaluating nurses' attitudes and caregiving behaviors for the dying.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Both psychiatric symptoms and the side effects of medication significantly affect patients with schizophrenia. These effects frequently result in a sedentary lifestyle and weight gain, which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. PURPOSE: This study developed an aerobic dance program for patients with schizophrenia and then evaluated the effect of this program on health-related fitness outcomes. METHODS: An experimental research design was used. Sixty patients with schizophrenia were recruited from a daycare ward and rehabilitation center at a psychiatric hospital in Taiwan. Paticipants were assigned randomly into an experimental group, which received the 8-week aerobic dance program intervention, and a control group, which received no intervention. All of the participants were assessed in terms of the outcome variables, which included bodyweight, body mass index, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance. These variables were measured before the intervention (pretest) as well as at 8 weeks (posttest) and 12 weeks (follow-up) after the intervention. This study used a generalized linear model with a generalized estimating equation method to account for the dependence of repeated measurements and to explore the effects of the intervention on health-related fitness outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-six participants were in the experimental group, and 28 were in the control group. Significant between-group differences were observed at posttest and in the follow-up for all of the health-related fitness outcomes with the exception of muscular endurance. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study suggests that an 8-week aerobic dance program may be an effective intervention in patients with schizophrenia in terms of improving bodyweight, body mass index, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance for a period of at least 4 months. Furthermore, although muscular endurance was postively affected during the short-term period, the benefits did not extend into the follow-up examination. On the basis of these findings, aerobic dance is recommended as a nonpharmacological intervention for patients with schizophrenia who are in daycare or rehabilitation settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The treatment and care of demented elderly represents a major medical and social issue in Taiwan. Many empirical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of applying multi-sensory environment therapy to improve mood symptoms and reduce disturbed behavior frequencies among this population. While the technique has been widely applied in various clinical settings in the West, a study focusing on the treatment efficacy of multi-sensory environment therapy has yet to be conducted in Taiwan. PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the treatment efficacy of multi-sensory environment therapy on psychological and behavioral symptomatology among elderly patients with dementia. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study recruited 20 study participants from a nursing home in northern Taiwan. Treatment and control groups were arranged to contain 10 cases each. Participants were stratified by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score before random assignment to one of the two groups. The treatment group received a total of 24 sessions of multi-sensory environment therapy for 12 weeks. The control group received routine nursing home care. Researchers assessed treatment outcomes by comparing Neuropsychiatry Inventory (NPI) scores at baseline, week 6, and week 12, respectively. RESULTS: The experimental group showed a significant improvement over the control group on the NPI item "Motor Disturbance" at week 6. The experimental group scored significantly better than the control group on overall NPI score and on NPI items "Irritability or Liability" and "Motor Disturbance" after completion of the 12-week treatment regimen. CONCLUSIONS: Multi-sensory environment therapy helps improve behavioral and emotional symptoms in elderly patients with dementia. This technique may offer the potential to both improve the life quality of this population and reduce caretaker burdens.
