RESUMO

Men who have sex with men and people living with HIV are disproportionately affected in the 2022 multi-country monkeypox epidemic. The smallpox vaccine can induce cross-reactive antibodies against the monkeypox virus (MPXV) and reduce the risk of infection. Data on antibodies against MPXV induced by historic smallpox vaccination in people with HIV are scarce. In this observational study, plasma samples were collected from people living with and without HIV in Shenzhen, China. We measured antibodies binding to two representative proteins of vaccinia virus (VACV; A27L and A33R) and homologous proteins of MPXV (A29L and A35R) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We compared the levels of these antibodies between people living with and without HIV. Stratified analyses were performed based on the year of birth of 1981 when the smallpox vaccination was stopped in China. Plasma samples from 677 people living with HIV and 746 people without HIV were tested. A consistent pattern was identified among the four antibodies, regardless of HIV status. VACV antigen-reactive and MPXV antigen-reactive antibodies induced by historic smallpox vaccination were detectable in the people born before 1981, and antibody levels reached a nadir during or after 1981. The levels of smallpox vaccine-induced antibodies were comparable between people living with HIV and those without HIV. Our findings suggest that the antibody levels against MPXV decreased in both people living with and without HIV due to the cessation of smallpox vaccination.

RESUMO

D-Galactose derivatives, including galactosyl-conjugates and galactose-upgrading compounds, provide various physiological benefits and find applications in industries such as food, cosmetics, feed, pharmaceuticals. Many research on galactose derivatives focuses on identification, characterization, development, and mechanistic aspects of their physiological function, providing opportunities and challenges for the development of practical approaches for synthesizing galactose derivatives. This study focuses on recent advancements in enzymatic biosynthesis of galactose derivatives. Various strategies including isomerization, epimerization, transgalactosylation, and phosphorylation-dephosphorylation were extensively discussed under the perspectives of thermodynamic feasibility, theoretical yield, cost-effectiveness, and by-product elimination. Specifically, the enzymatic phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cascade is a promising enzymatic synthesis route for galactose derivatives because it can overcome the thermodynamic equilibrium of isomerization and utilize cost-effective raw materials. The study also elucidates the existing challenges and future trends in enzymatic biosynthesis of galactose derivatives. Collectively, this review provides a real-time summary aimed at promoting the practical biosynthesis of galactose derivatives through enzymatic catalysis.

BACKGROUD: The genus Mesorhizobium is shown by phylogenomics to be paraphyletic and forms part of a complex that includes the genera Aminobacter, Aquamicrobium, Pseudaminobacter and Tianweitania. The relationships for type strains belong to these genera need to be carefully re-evaluated. RESULTS: The relationships of Mesorhizobium complex are evaluated based on phylogenomic analyses and overall genome relatedness indices (OGRIs) of 61 type strains. According to the maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on concatenated sequences of 539 core proteins and the tree constructed using the bac120 bacterial marker set from Genome Taxonomy Database, 65 type strains were grouped into 9 clusters. Moreover, 10 subclusters were identified based on the OGRIs including average nucleotide identity (ANI), average amino acid identity (AAI) and core-proteome average amino acid identity (cAAI), with AAI and cAAI showing a clear intra- and inter-(sub)cluster gaps of 77.40-80.91% and 83.98-86.16%, respectively. Combined with the phylogenetic trees and OGRIs, the type strains were reclassified into 15 genera. This list includes five defined genera Mesorhizobium, Aquamicrobium, Pseudaminobacter, Aminobacterand Tianweitania, among which 40/41 Mesorhizobium species and one Aminobacter species are canonical legume microsymbionts. The other nine (sub)clusters are classified as novel genera. Cluster III, comprising symbiotic M. alhagi and M. camelthorni, is classified as Allomesorhizobium gen. nov. Cluster VI harbored a single symbiotic species M. albiziae and is classified as Neomesorhizobium gen. nov. The remaining seven non-symbiotic members were proposed as: Neoaquamicrobium gen. nov., Manganibacter gen. nov., Ollibium gen. nov., Terribium gen. nov., Kumtagia gen. nov., Borborobacter gen. nov., Aerobium gen. nov.. Furthermore, the genus Corticibacterium is restored and two species in Subcluster IX-1 are reclassified as the member of this genus. CONCLUSION: The Mesorhizobium complex are classified into 15 genera based on phylogenomic analyses and OGRIs of 65 type strains. This study resolved previously non-monophyletic genera in the Mesorhizobium complex.

AIM: To explore the mediating role of psychological capital between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour among Chinese nurses. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: In December 2021, online surveys were delivered among nurses from 37 hospitals in Anhui Province by convenience sampling approach. The data was collected using the Chinese version of the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, Nurse Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Nurse Innovative Behaviour Scale. The structural equation model and bootstrap test examined the mediating role of psychological capital between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour. RESULTS: 3495 Chinese nurses from 37 Anhui Province hospitals participated in this study. The mean item score of authentic leadership was 3.25 (SD 0.83), psychological capital was 4.85 (SD 0.89), and innovative behaviour was 2.82 (SD 0.84). Authentic leadership perceived by nurses, psychological capital, and innovative behaviour were statistically significant and positively correlated with each other (r = 0.524 ~ 0.806, p < 0.01). Psychological capital significantly mediated the association between authentic leadership and innovative behaviour (ß = 0.449, p < 0.001), and its mediating effect accounted for 76.75% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: Results suggest the importance of developing nurse managers' authentic leadership to foster nurses' psychological capital and innovation behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: Oxidative stress is pivotal in advancing diabetic nephropathy (DN). Salvianolic acid B (SAB), derived from Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae, exhibits renoprotective effects. However, the mechanisms underlying its action in DN are not fully elucidated. This study explores SAB's protective effect on DN, focusing on its antioxidative properties in glomerular mesangial cells. METHODS: The renoprotective effects of various SAB dosages on DN rats were assessed by evaluating kidney tissue pathological alterations through hematoxylin and eosin, periodic acid-Schiff, Masson, TUNEL staining, and kidney function through biochemical detection. Cell counting kit-8 and lactate dehydrogenase cytotoxicity assays were utilized to evaluate the viability of high glucose (HG)-induced HBZY-1 cells treated with various SAB dosages. Oxidative stress and inflammation levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. The Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3)/Forkhead box transcription factor O1 (FOXO1) pathway was examined through Western blot and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: SAB mitigated kidney histopathological alterations and function and cell apoptosis in DN rats at various dosages. It enhanced the activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase while decreasing reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels both in vivo and in vitro. SAB also suppressed the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α) and the expression of collagen IV and fibronectin in HG-induced HBZY-1 cells. Furthermore, SAB activated the SIRT3/FOXO1 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that SAB may alleviate oxidative stress in DN both in vivo and in vitro, potentially through the activation of the SIRT3/FOXO1-mediated signaling pathway. This study provides initial insights into the possible antioxidative and renoprotective effects of SAB, indicating its potential utility as a therapeutic agent for DN.

BACKGROUND: Caring behavior among nurses would have an impact on patient outcomes. External organizational job resources and personal internal psychological resources are correlated to nurses' caring behavior. Authentic leadership and psychological capital were shown to be correlated with nurses' caring behavior in previous studies. However, the relationships among the three are nevertheless unclear. This study aimed to examine if psychological capital could act as a mediator between nursing managers' authentic leadership and nurses' caring behavior. METHODS: In December 2021, a total of 3,662 nurses were recruited from 37 hospitals in Anhui Province, China. They filled out online surveys, including general demographic information, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and the Caring Behavior Inventory. Structural Equation Modeling and the bootstrapping procedure were used to examine the mediating role of psychological capital. RESULTS: The scores of authentic leadership, psychological capital, and caring behavior of 3,495 nurses were 52.04 ± 13.24, 96.89 ± 17.78, and 104.28 ± 17.01, respectively. Psychological capital significantly mediated the relationship between authentic leadership and nurses' caring behavior (ß = 0.378, p < 0.001, 95% confidence interval: 0.350 ~ 0.402), which made up 78.75% of the total impact (0.480). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggested that nursing managers should develop an authentic leadership style, which can effectively improve nurses' caring behaviors toward patients in clinical practice. Meanwhile, nursing leaders should strengthen nurses' psychological evaluation and training, and promote nurses' caring behavior in clinical settings.

Background: With the early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in China, the demographics of treatment-naïve people living with HIV (PLWH) are moving closer to those of the general population, which is characterized by a gradual increase in metabolic indicators. However, the epidemic trends of overweight and obesity over the past decade in treatment-naïve PLWH ready to initiate ART have not yet been investigated. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 12,135 consecutive treatment-naïve PLWH ready to initiate ART in Shenzhen, using data retrieved from the China National Free Antiretroviral Treatment Program database from 2014 to 2020. The chi-square test was used to examine the trends of overweight and obesity between age groups, and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the association of overweight and obesity with hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Results: During the 7-year study period, 12,135 treatment-naïve PLWH ready to initiate ART were included, among whom 1,837 (15.1%) were overweight and 388 (3.2%) were obese. The prevalence of overweight rose from 11.4 to 17.3% (Z = -4.58, P for trend <0.01) and that of obesity from 2.0% to 4.2% (Z = -6.45, P for trend <0.01) from 2014 to 2020. The annual prevalence of overweight was the highest in the age group of participants >35 years compared to prevalence in other age groups during the period 2014-2020. Compared with those who were not overweight or obese, PLWH who were overweight or obese were more likely to have hyperglycemia (aOR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.37-2.49 for overweight; aOR 2.68, 95% CI: 1.62-4.44 for obesity), higher ALT level (aOR 2.70, 95% CI: 2.33-3.13 for overweight; aOR 3.85, 95% CI: 2.93-5.05 for obesity), higher TG levels (aOR 1.89, 95% CI 1.63-2.19 for overweight; aOR 2.56, 95% CI 1.97-3.32 for obesity), and lower HDL levels (aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.44-1.95 for overweight; aOR 2.06, 95% CI 1.54-2.77 for obesity). Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in treatment-naive PLWH increased steadily from 2014 to 2020 in Shenzhen. Overweight and obese in treatment-naive PLWH ready to initiate ART were associated with dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. Public health authorities should take proactive steps to address these issues by implementing targeted screening, intervention programs including lifestyle modifications, and integrated healthcare services.

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation between legumes and rhizobia makes a great contribution to the terrestrial ecosystem. The successful symbiosis between the partners mainly depends on the nod and nif genes in rhizobia, while the specific symbiosis is mainly determined by the structure of Nod factors and the corresponding secretion systems (type III secretion system; T3SS), etc. These symbiosis genes are usually located on symbiotic plasmids or a chromosomal symbiotic island, both could be transferred interspecies. In our previous studies, Sesbania cannabina-nodulating rhizobia across the world were classified into 16 species of four genera and all the strains, especially those of Rhizobium spp., harboured extraordinarily highly conserved symbiosis genes, suggesting that horizontal transfer of symbiosis genes might have happened among them. In order to learn the genomic basis of diversification of rhizobia under the selection of host specificity, we performed this study to compare the complete genome sequences of four Rhizobium strains associated with S. cannabina, YTUBH007, YTUZZ027, YTUHZ044 and YTUHZ045. Their complete genomes were sequenced and assembled at the replicon level. Each strain represents a different species according to the average nucleotide identity (ANI) values calculated using the whole-genome sequences; furthermore, except for YTUBH007, which was classified as Rhizobium binae, the remaining three strains were identified as new candidate species. A single symbiotic plasmid sized 345-402 kb containing complete nod, nif, fix, T3SS and conjugal transfer genes was detected in each strain. The high ANI and amino acid identity (AAI) values, as well as the close phylogenetic relationships among the entire symbiotic plasmid sequences, indicate that they have the same origin and the entire plasmid has been transferred among different Rhizobium species. These results indicate that S. cannabina stringently selects a certain symbiosis gene background of the rhizobia for nodulation, which might have forced the symbiosis genes to transfer from some introduced rhizobia to the related native or local-condition-adapted bacteria. The existence of almost complete conjugal transfer related elements, but not the gene virD, indicated that the self-transfer of the symbiotic plasmid in these rhizobial strains may be realized via a virD-independent pathway or through another unidentified gene. This study provides insight for the better understanding of high-frequency symbiotic plasmid transfer, host-specific nodulation and the host shift for rhizobia.

The tendency of the Omicron variant to rapidly became the dominant SARS-CoV-2 strain and its weaker virulence than other strains worldwide has prompted many countries to adjust their public health strategies. This work summarizes all appropriate clinical interventions to reduce the public health burden caused by COVID-19 according to guidelines from the World Health Organization and 10 countries, i.e., the United States of America (USA), India, France, Germany, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom (UK), and China. Five stages of COVID-19 were identified: asymptomatic infection and mild, moderate, severe, and critical illness. Most guidelines recommend antivirals starting with mild cases for those from Germany and India. Since more drugs are being developed and are becoming available to COVID-19 patients, guidelines are increasingly being updated with new pharmacological intervention strategies. Thus, a global view needs to be adopted to provide helpful options and precise treatment strategies during the lasting fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clinical diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) poses a challenge. The Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) has displayed greater sensitivity at diagnosing tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance compared to the Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert). However, whether Ultra is able to facilitate an auxiliary diagnosis of TB in patients with an HIV-TB co-infection remains unclear. Accordingly, the current study evaluated the use of Ultra in patients with an HIV-TB co-infection by summarizing relevant studies. The sensitivity and specificity of Ultra and Xpert at diagnosing patients with an HIV-TB co-infection have been summarized and compared. The performance of Ultra in diagnosing extrapulmonary tuberculosis was also summarized. Although a large-cohort, multi-center study needs to be conducted to assess Ultra's ability to detect TB in AIDS patients in the future, the current evidence supports the use of Ultra for the assessment of patients with an HIV-TB co-infection.

Two new lignans (1-2) and a new octaketide (12), together with twenty-nine known compounds (3-11, 13-32) were isolated and identified from the aerial part of Pogostemon cablin. Their chemical structures were revealed mainly through NMR and MS data. The absolute configuration of 1 and 2 was deduced by comparing its experimental CD with the calculated ECD spectra. The inhibitory activities of the isolated compounds on LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells were investigated. At a concentration of 25 µM, compounds 1 and 11 showed approximately equal NO inhibitory effects to that of aminoguanidine.

On the basis of determining isoelectric point of algae residue protein obtained from Scenedesmus dimorphus, this study investigated the effects of pH values, ratio of liquid to solid, extraction temperature and time on protein extraction rates, and assessed the nutritional value of protein extracted from microalgae residues. The results from orthogonal experiments revealed the optimum conditions for extracting proteins from algal residues (pH: 12; liquid-to-solid ratio: 40 mL/g; extraction temperature: 45 ℃; extraction time: 140 min). It was observed that under the optimal conditions, the protein extraction rate was 40.13%. Essential amino acids account for 44.3% of the proteins obtained from algal residues. The content of anti-nutritional factors in algal residues was significantly reduced, and the digestibility of algal residue proteins was higher than the digestibility of algal powder. This indicated that algal residues could be an ideal source of proteins for humans.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the evolution of blood lipids and compare the risk of dyslipidemia between antiretroviral-naive people living with HIV who received tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), lamivudine (3TC), and efavirenz (EFV) (TDF + 3TC + EFV) and those who received coformulated elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide (E/C/F/TAF). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 2343 antiretroviral-naive people living with HIV who initiated TDF + 3TC + EFV or E/C/F/TAF. A propensity score matching method was used to compare longitudinal changes of blood lipids between the 2 groups. RESULTS: By using 1:3 matching ratio, we included 253 and 91 matched patients in TDF + 3TC + EFV group and E/C/F/TAF group, respectively. The levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were higher in E/C/F/TAF group than those in TDF + 3TC + EFV group at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months (Wilcoxon test, all Ps < 0.05), except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol at 9 and 12 months. The cumulative rates of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and high LDL-C in PLWH with normal lipid levels in E/C/F/TAF group were higher than those in TDF + 3TC + EFV group (hypercholesterolemia, 59.7% vs 21.5%, P < 0.001; hypertriglyceridemia, 69.5% vs 46.3%, P < 00.001; and high LDL-C, 41.5% vs 14.2%, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed treatment with E/C/F/TAF was associated with a significantly higher risk of hypercholesterolemia [adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 4.12; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.65 to 6.41], hypertriglyceridemia (adjusted HR, 1.69; 95% CI: 1.18 to 2.43), and high LDL-C (adjusted HR, 4.60; 95% CI: 2.66 to 7.97). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that treatment with E/C/F/TAF resulted in higher risks of dyslipidemia compared with TDF + 3TC + EFV.

(-)-α-Bisabolol (BIS) is a sesquiterpene alcohol derived mostly from Matricaria recutita L., which is a traditional herb and exhibits multiple biologic activities. BIS has been reported for treatment of skin disorders, but the effect of BIS on anti-atopic dermatitis (AD) remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of BIS on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD in BALB/c mice and the underlying mechanism in Bone Marrow-Derived Mast Cells (BMMCs). Topical BIS treatment reduced AD-like symptoms and the release of interleukin (IL)-4 without immunoglobulin (Ig)-E production in DNCB-induced BALB/c mice. Histopathological examination revealed that BIS reduced epidermal thickness and inhibited mast cells in the AD-like lesions skin. Oral administration of BIS effectively and dose-dependently suppressed mast-cell-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. In IgE-mediated BMMCs, the levels of ß-hexosaminidase (ß-hex), histamine, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were reduced by blocking the activation of nuclear factor-қB (NF-қB) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) without P38 mitogen activated protein (P38) and extracellular regulated protein kinases (Erk1/2). Taken together, our experimental results indicated BIS suppresses AD by inhibiting the activation of JNK and NF-κB in mast cells. BIS may be a promising therapeutic agent for atopic dermatitis and other mast-cell-related diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy and its effect on serum levels of tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α), interleukin 1ß(IL-1ß), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) between short needling (close-to-bone needling) and conventional acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with blood stasis obstruction. METHODS: A total of 68 KOA patients with blood stasis obstruction were randomized into a short needling group (34 cases, 3 cases dropped off) and a conventional acupuncture group (34 cases, 3 cases dropped off). The same acupoints (Dubi [ST 35], Neixiyan [EX-LE 4], Binzhong [Extra], Liangqiu [ST 34], etc. on the affected side) were selected in the two groups. In the short needling group, short needling technique was adopted, the needles were slowly inserted and the needle bodies were shaken, thus gradually penetrated to the bone. In the conventional acupuncture group, conventional acupuncture was adopted, the needles were penetrated to the muscle. After qi-arrival, Dubi (ST 35) and Neixiyan (EX-LE 4), Zusanli (ST 36) and Liangqiu (ST 34) were connected with CMNS6-1 electronic acupuncture instrument, with disperse-dense wave, 2 Hz/10 Hz in frequency, the current intensity was based on patients' feeling, the needles were retained for 30 min, at the same time, the knee joint was irradiated for 30 min with a special electromagnetic wave apparatus in the two groups. Once every other day, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) score, knee joint pain visual analogue scale (VAS) score, inflammatory response related indexes (serum TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6 and PGE2) and knee joint ultrasound were observed,and the clinical effect was evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment,the pain, stiffness, function scores and total scores of WOMAC were decreased as compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), except for the pain score, the changes of above scores in the short needling group were greater than the conventional acupuncture group (P<0.05). After treatment, the VAS scores, serum levels of TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6, PGE2 and knee joint synovium thickness, intra-articular effusion were decreased as compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), the levels of TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6 in the short needling group were lower than the conventional acupuncture group (P<0.05). The total effective rate in the short needling group was 87.1% (27/31), which was superior to 83.9% (26/31) in the conventional acupuncture group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Short needling could improve the knee joint function, relieve the pain and inflammatory response, improve the knee joint synovium inflammatory response, reduce the knee joint intra-articular effusion for KOA patients, its effect is better than conventional acupuncture.

Monkeypox has a very prominent regional epidemic. It has been confined to Western and Central African countries. Sporadic cases found in countries outside Africa generally have a history of sojourn in endemic areas. However, the recent multinational outbreak of monkeypox cases in Europe in early May 2022 has revealed a changing epidemiological trend, those confirmed cases had no sojourn history in endemic areas and with a high proportion of cases involving men who have sex with men (MSM). Among the MSM cases, many of them presented atypical clinical manifestations of monkeypox and with other sexually transmitted diseases co-infection. Combined with the high social interactivity in this community, there is likely a higher risk of monkeypox transmission in this population. Establishing an infectious disease surveillance system, maintaining highly vigilant regarding the transmission of monkeypox in MSM, and responding promptly are necessary and effective measures to contain the outbreak.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of continuous care with improved insulin injection techniques on patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled patients with diabetes mellitus. They were randomly assigned to a control or observation group. Patients in the control group received conventional continuous nursing. Patients in the observation group were given optimized insulin injection education and continuous nursing on the same basis as the conventional nursing used in the control group. Blood glucose-related outcomes, knowledge of insulin injections and adverse events were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 96 patients with diabetes mellitus were enrolled in the study (n = 48 per group). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of sex, age and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Compared with the control group, continuous care combined with optimized insulin injection techniques significantly reduced blood glucose target time, fasting blood glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose and HbA1c. The proportions of patients reporting a subcutaneous mass, insulin leakage and hypoglycaemic events were significantly lower in the observation group; and pain scores were significantly reduced compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous care and optimization of insulin injection techniques can help patients achieve better diabetes-related outcomes.Study Registration Number: ChiCTR2200057166.

Hepatitis B virus genotype C (HBV/C) is one of the most prevalent HBV strains worldwide, especially in the Western Pacific and the South-East Asia. However, the origin and evolutionary timescale of HBV/C remains largely unresolved. We analyzed the evolutionary rate and molecular clock phylogeny of 101 full-genome HBV/C sequences sampled globally using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach. We inferred the spatiotemporal dynamics of the HBV/C worldwide by the Bayesian Stochastic Search Variable Selection (BSSVS). We found that the estimated mean evolution rate of the HBV/C genotype full-genome was 4.32 × 10-5 subs/site/year (95% highest posterior density 3.02 × 10-6 - 8.97 × 10-5). Phylogeographic reconstruction was able to identify a single location for the origin of the global HBV/C in Australia around A.D. 715. The subgenotype C4 diverged earliest and mainly circulated in Australia, C1 mainly in Southeast Asia, C2 mainly in East Asia and C3 in Remote Oceania. The effective number of HBV infection presented a rapid exponential increase between the 1760s and 1860s followed by a maintained high level until now. Our study, for the first time, provides an estimated timescale for the HBV/C epidemic, and brings new insight to the dispersal of HBV/C in humans globally. Based on the continuous presence of a highly effective viral population, this study provides further evidence of the challenge from a population-based molecular level to eliminate HBV by 2030, and calls for a concerted effort from policy makers, health providers, and society in the globalized world.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a frequent causative agent of post-pneumonectomy empyema-associated broncho-pleural fistula (BPF) and it has a high mortality rate. In recent years, the therapeutic potential of bacteriophage therapy has recognized anew as antimicrobial resistance increases globally. Studies are increasingly reporting the efficacy and safety of bacteriophage therapy for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. However, the clinical efficacy of bacteriophage therapy in empyema has seldom been studied. The current study reports the authors' experience with bacteriophage therapy for a 68-year-old Chinese man who suffered BPF-associated empyema and pneumonia caused by carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa. A personalized lytic pathogen-specific two-phage preparation was administered to the patient continuously for 24 days in combination with conventional antibiotics. The treatment was well-tolerated, resulting in clearance of the pathogen and improvement of the clinical outcome. This experience shows that a combined conventional antibiotic treatment with bacteriophage therapy may be effective at alleviating a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection in BPF-associated empyema.

Chamaecrista mimosoides is an annual herb legume widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia and Africa. It may have primitive and independently-evolved root nodule types but its rhizobia have not been systematically studied. Therefore, in order to learn the diversity and species affinity of its rhizobia, root nodules were sampled from C. mimosoides plants growing in seven geographical sites along the coast line of Shandong Peninsula, China. A total of 422 rhizobial isolates were obtained from nodules, and they were classified into 28 recA haplotypes. By using multilocus sequence analysis of the concatenated housekeeping genes dnaK, glnII, gyrB, recA and rpoB, the representative strains for these haplotypes were designated as eight defined and five candidate novel genospecies in the genus Bradyrhizobium. Bradyrhizobium elkanii and Bradyrhizobium ferriligni were predominant and universally distributed. The symbiotic genes nodC and nifH of the representative strains showed very similar topology in their phylogenetic trees indicating their co-evolution history. All the representative strains formed effective root nodules in nodulation tests. The correlation between genospecies and soil characteristics analyzed by CANOCO software indicated that available potassium (AK), organic carbon (OC) and available nitrogen (AN) in the soil samples were the main factors affecting the distribution of the symbionts involved in this current study. The study is the first systematic survey of Chamaecrista mimosoides-nodulating rhizobia, and it showed that Chamaecrista spp. were nodulated by bradyrhizobia in natural environments. In addition, the host spectrum of the corresponding rhizobial species was extended, and the study provided novel information on the biodiversity and biogeography of rhizobia.
