RESUMO

Background: Most maternal deaths occur during childbirth and after childbirth. This study was aimed at determining the trends of health facilities during delivery in Bangladesh, as well as their influencing factors. Methods: This study used secondary data from three Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICSs) in 2006, 2012-13, and 2019. The study's target sample was those women who gave birth in the last two years of the survey. A two-level logistic regression was applied to determine the effects on health facility delivery separately in these two survey points (MICSs 2012-13 and 2019). Results: The results show that the delivery of health facilities has increased by almost 37.4% in Bangladesh, from 16% in 2006 to 53.4% in 2019. The results of two-level logistic regression show that the total variation in health facility delivery across the community has decreased over recent years. After adding community variables, various individual-level factors such as women with secondary education (OR = 0.55 in 2012-13 vs. OR =0.60 in 2019), women from middle wealth status (OR = 0.49 in 2012-13 vs. OR = 0.65 in 2019), religion, and child ever born showed a strong relationship with health facility delivery in both survey years. At the community level, residents showed significant association only in the 2012-13 survey and indicated a 43% (OR = 1.43 for 2012-13) greater availability of health facilities in urban residences than in rural residences. Using media showed a highly significant connection with health facility delivery in both years as well as an increasing trend over the years in Bangladesh (OR = 1.19 in 2012-13 vs. OR = 1.38 in 2019). However, division, prenatal care, and skilled services all contribute greatly to increasing the delivery of health facilities in Bangladesh. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that policymakers need to pay attention to individual and community-level factors, especially women's education, poverty reduction, and adequate prenatal care provided by well-trained caregivers.

RESUMO

Aquafoods are diverse and rich in containing various health functional compounds which boost natural immunity. In this manuscript, the contents of biofunctional compounds such as vitamins, minerals, protein and amino acids, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and pigments, etc. in various aquafoods like fishes, molluscs, crustaceans, seaweeds etc. are reported. The functional roles of those compounds are also depicted which enhance the immunecompetence and immunomodulation of the consumers. This paper provides an account of the recommended daily dietary intake level of those compounds for human. Those compounds available in aquafoods are recommended as they fight against various infectious diseases by enhancing immunity. Available reports on the bioactive compounds in aquafoods reveal the immunity boosting performances which may offer a new insight into controlling infectious diseases.

RESUMO

This paper reports the effects of four popular cooking methods viz. grilling, boiling, frying, and microwaving on the proximate and nutritional compositions of freshwater mud eel (FWME) muscle. The moisture content of raw FWME muscle was 74.45%, which was similar in boiled products but lower in grilled, fried, and microwaved products (p ≤ .05). The protein content in raw and cooked FWME muscles varied between 14.49% and 21.28%. There were found 20 different fatty acids in FWME muscle of which palmitic acid was the most abundant one with an amount of 26.51%-29.70% in raw and cooked FWME muscles. FWME muscle contained a substantial amount of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, ranging from 7.54% to 13.7%. However, the thermal effects during cooking decreased the ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid contents. There were seven essential and eight nonessential amino acids available in FWME muscle; among the essential amino acids, lysine content was the highest. Raw and cooked FWME were very rich in calcium, between 794.52 mg/100 g and 883.24 mg/100 g muscle. Among the studied heavy metals, Pb content was the highest. However, all the heavy metal contents were within acceptable limits determined by health risk assessment, that is, target hazard quotient and target cancer risk.

RESUMO

Bacterial ß-1,3-1,4-glucanase (BG) is an endoglucanase that hydrolyzes linear ß-glucans containing ß-1,3 and ß-1,4 linkages, such as barley ß-glucans. In this study, a BG gene was transformed into the food-grade plasmid pNZ8149 and successfully expressed in Lactococcus lactis NZ3900 using the nisin-controlled gene expression system. To facilitate extracellular secretion, the signal peptide Usp45 was added during vector construction. A histidine tag was also added for affinity purification. BG was extracellularly secreted and was also present in the cells in soluble form. N-terminal amino acid residue analysis of secreted BG revealed that the Usp45 peptide was removed. The optimum temperature and pH for both intracellular and extracellular BG were 40 °C and 6, respectively. The enzyme kinetic parameters, Vmax, Km, kcat, and kcat/Km, of extracellular BG were 1317.51 µmol min-1, 1.97 mg ml-1, 588.54 s-1, and 298.26 ml s-1∙mg-1, respectively. There was no significant difference in the enzyme kinetic parameters of intracellular and extracellular BG. The growth pattern of transformed L. lactis NZ3900 in ß-glucan-containing liquid medium confirmed ß-glucan degradation by BG. The transformed strain degraded ß-glucans, produced gluco-oligosaccharide, and produced lactic acid. The strain and expression system constructed in this study could be applied to industrial fields requiring BG produced in food-grade lactococcal secretory expression system.

RESUMO

The immunomodulatory effects of Monascus-fermented Saccharina japonica extract on anti- and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene expression of THP-1 cells were evaluated. Extracts of fermented samples showed higher phenolic, flavonoid, protein, and reducing sugar contents than unfermented one. Fermented samples were rich in many bioactive compounds determined by GC-MS analyses and showed cell viability greater than 85% in MTS assay. Regarding the anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory activities of the different samples, Q-PCR analyses revealed that IL-10 gene expression in THP-1 cells was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in cells treated with the SjMp or SjMk sample than those treated with the unfermented sample. Cells treated with the SjMp extract or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher relative gene expression of IL-4 cytokine than cells treated with SjMk or SjU extracts. The relative gene expression of IFN-α was higher in cells treated with SjMp followed by LPS, SjMk, and SjU. TGF-ß expression was higher in LPS-stimulated cells followed by SjMk and other samples. Cells treated with SjMp exhibited significantly higher pro-inflammatory (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and NF-κB) cytokine gene expression than cells treated with SjU. These results revealed that extracts from S. japonica fermented with Monascus spp. regulate cytokine gene expression. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
