Thirty years of research on animal virus diseases performed in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology.

The results of a 30-year research activity in the field of animal virus diseases performed in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology are briefly reviewed. Investigations referred to swine pest, fowl pest, Newcastle disease, fowl pox, sheep pox, Aujeszky's disease, Rubarth virus, foot-and-mouth disease, chlamydial infections, etc. Mention is made of the preparations obtained for the specific prophylaxis of most of these diseases.

Specific prophylaxis of enzootic chlamydial ovine abortion.

A vaccine against chlamydial ovine abortion was prepared according to an original method and experimentally applied to more than 500,000 animals in large breeding units. The vaccine induced a considerable seroconversion (as demonstrated by complement fixation tests) and reduced by 3--5 times the damage due to chlamydioses. Vaccination of primiparous ewes, followed by 2--3 annual revaccinations, gave good results, conferring resistance on the vaccinated animals.

[Vascular rickettsiosis]. / Les rickettsioses vasculaires.

The authors discuss the problem of rickettsial and para-rickettsial etiopathogeny of some types of angiopathies earlier characterized by a febrile state. They are especially interested in vasculopathies occurring in endemia areas. The disease may involve the entire vascular system and the pathogenic agent remains in the mid membranes and in the adventitia, as can be seen by seriologic and anatomo-pathologic tests. There are diffuse or nodular lymphoblastic infiltrations (pan-vascular condition). The authors also demonstrate that treatment with higher tetracyclines (Reverin) is absolutely advised, and draw attention to the need to do systematic seriologic research on all patients hospitalized for cardio-vascular diseases.

Investigations on some antigenic relationships between different human, mammalian and avian Chlamydia strains.

Serological investigations were performed in order to establish the antigenic relationships between three Chlamydia strains: T44(subgroup A), T13 and Q18 (subgroup B). By using monospecific mouse immune sera a certain degree of antigenical relationships was made evident and the strains could be typed by microagglutination and microimmlnofluorescence reactions. Similar results were obtained by seroneutralization with hyperimmune sera prepared in the rooster. Complement fixation proved to be a group-specific reaction unable to reveal significant differences between the strains studied, not even with monospecific mouse sera. The antigenic relationships established between strains T44 (trachoma) and T13 (psittacosis) suggest the existence features common to subgroup A and B Chlamudia strains. The importance of typing Chlamudia strains with a view to specific prophylaxis is emphasized.

Cellular transformation in vitro induced by herpes simplex virus (HSV). Note III. Oncogenicity of some HSV-2-transformed cell lines.

At high in vitro passage levels HSV-2-transformed hamster and rat cell lines were oncogenic for the homologous animals, inducing fusocellular or round-cell sarcomas. The cell lines obtained by in vitro cultivation of the tumors were free of infectious virus.
