Introduction: Learning through perceptual training using the Gabor patch (GP) has attracted attention as a new vision restoration technique for myopia and age-related deterioration of visual acuity (VA). However, the task itself is monotonous and painful and requires numerous training sessions and some time before being effective, which has been a challenge for its widespread application. One effective means of facilitating perceptual learning is the empowerment of EEG alpha rhythm in the sensory cortex before neurofeedback (NF) training; however, there is a lack of evidence for VA. Methods: We investigated whether four 30-min sessions of GP training, conducted over 2 weeks with/without EEG NF to increase alpha power (NF and control group, respectively), can improve vision in myopic subjects. Contrast sensitivity (CS) and VA were measured before and after each GP training. Results: The NF group showed an improvement in CS at the fourth training session, not observed in the control group. In addition, VA improved only in the NF group at the third and fourth training sessions, this appears as a consolidation effect (maintenance of the previous training effect). Participants who produced stronger alpha power during the third training session showed greater VA recovery during the fourth training session. Discussion: These results indicate that enhanced pretraining alpha empowerment strengthens the subsequent consolidation of perceptual learning and that even a short period of GP training can have a positive effect on VA recovery. This simple protocol may facilitate use of a training method to easily recover vision.

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in hemodialysis patients (HPs). As a food source, fish contains both CVD-preventive and CVD-promoting fatty acids; however, there is no consensus on fish consumption as a preventive measure for CVD in HPs. This single-center longitudinal cohort study aims to assess the impact of fish intake frequency (FIF) per week on CVD in Japanese HPs. Methods: Upon the initiation of the study, 148 HPs were evaluated to determine the FIF, and blood samples were analyzed. These patients were then monitored for 6 years.The relationships between each FIF and blood sampling data, CVD-specific survival (CSS), and new CVD-free survival (nCFS) were statistically calculated using Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Results: During the observation period, 65 deaths were reported, 16 of which were attributed to CVD. Further, 53 patients developed new CVD onset, and no association was found between the FIF and blood sampling data. Based on the Kaplan-Meier survival curves, there was a significant difference in the CSS probability rates at 72 months between patients with an FIF of ≥4 (0.719, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.530-0.842) and those with an FIF of ≤3 (0.930, 95% CI: 0.851-0.968) (p < 0.01). However, the nCFS probability at 72 months did not significantly differ between patients with an FIF of ≥4 and those with an FIF of ≤3. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression showed that an FIF of ≥4 (hazard ratio: 3.64, 95% CI: 1.22-10.9, p = 0.02) was an independent predictor of CSS, but not of nCFS. Conclusions: It was suggested that a higher FIF in HPs might be one of the risks for developing CVD with increased mortality.

Structural polysaccharide nanocrystals (NCs) including cellulose nanocrystal have attracted attention. In order to broaden the range of application of the NCs, we can take advantage of their original characteristics by establishing simple and reasonable processing methods. We here demonstrate a micropatterning of animal cellular adhesion by inkjet printing of aqueous dispersions of cytocompatible chitinous NCs onto cellophane films. We display how to regulate the deposition form and two-dimensional shape of the chitinous NC micromoldings using a research inkjet printer. Adhesive capability of mouse fibroblasts onto the chitinous substrates was greatly improved by alkali deacetylation. The deacetylated products remained rod-like nanostructures, but the original chitin crystal form changed to that of chitosan by an intensive deacetylation. The adhered cells could be recovered glycolytically. The chitinous micropatterning substrates can be utilized for biomedical applications such as controlling of cellular shapes, precise monitoring molecular events in biochemistry, and drug screening.

This study identified factors related to the satisfaction with collaborative problem solving efforts and investigated the differential effects of these factors. In Study 1, a total of 240 university students participated in research. The research was a qualitative data analysis of group members' descriptions of their collaborative problem solving experiences. The results suggested that satisfaction was determined by a number of factors, especially changes in self-cognition, changes in others' cognition, and inclusion of the other in the self. In Study 2, the differential effects of each factor related to task conditions were examined. The factor of changes in self-cognition and inclusion of the other in the self influenced satisfaction, regardless of the task condition. In a well-defined task, group and personal performance were increasing members' satisfaction. For an ill-defined task, trust of the other members was increasing members' satisfaction. We concluded that satisfaction with collaborative problem solving was influenced by not only task performance, but also emotional and cognitive factors.
