RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), once an orphan disease, has gained increased interest world-wide. The most highly cited works in HS are from North America and Europe despite known phenotypic and epidemiological differences globally. Herein, we perform a bibliometric analysis to characterize HS publication trends in Asia and Australasia (AA) over the last decade. METHODS: PubMed database was searched to identify HS-related articles and were analyzed for senior authorship, country of origin, article topic, and study design. RESULTS: The search criteria yielded 163 articles from AA. Rapid increase in publications started in 2015 with 75% (123/163) of total articles published in the last half of the decade. Case reports/series were consistently the most published study type yearly and overall (49%, 80/163). Efforts were made to increase high level of evidence publications with both randomized controlled trials from Japan and Turkey including all Asian patients. China, Japan, and India were the leading publishing countries with Australia, Israel, and Turkey increasingly contributing in the last half of the decade. CONCLUSIONS: Advancements in HS research are encouraging with increases in publication numbers and diversity; however, more geographical diversity is needed in order to garner a better understanding of the disease and treatment options.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incarcerated population may have variable access to specialty care that may affect the detection and diagnosis of skin cancer. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to characterize skin cancers in the incarcerated population and determine time to treatment initiation (TTI) after biopsy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using data from a single-center referral hospital of incarcerated patients with biopsy-proven basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), or melanoma between January 2009 and December 2019. The main outcome measured was TTI after biopsy. RESULTS: One hundred thirteen patients, majority men (96.5%) and of Caucasian race (89.4%), were diagnosed and/or treated for 191 skin cancers. Of these 191 skin cancers, 118 were BCC (61.8%), 58 were SCC (30.4%), and 15 were melanomas (7.9%). The average TTI after biopsy for melanoma was 57 days (range: 21-136, median: 51, 95% confidence interval: 39.89-74.10) with an average Breslow depth of 1.57 mm. CONCLUSION: The average TTI of melanoma in the incarcerated population in this study was greater than 30 days, which may have increased mortality risk.

RESUMO

Millennial learners have educational needs and preferences that differ from those of prior generations. They prefer learning from online resources, appreciate interactive didactic sessions, and desire frequent feedback and guidance. Understanding and adapting to these learner attributes may allow for optimization of the educational environment for members of this generation. The following recommendations were developed to advance a dermatology residency program's curriculum to accommodate the modern learner. Although the efficacy of these teaching tips has yet to be fully established, they are grounded by theory and are evidence-informed. Medical educators who are able to employ these strategies are likely to be successful in teaching and engaging the millennial learner.

RESUMO

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has required dermatology residency programs to convert their learning environment largely to a virtual setting. The impromptu reliance on online lectures, videoconference didactics, and other digital educational resources during this time is welcomed by today's millennial generation of medical trainees and coincides with their learning preferences. Although hands-on direct patient care experiences are currently limited due to reservation of in-office visits for urgent care only, resident participation in teledermatology has permitted them to continue gaining valuable clinical training and may allow for enhanced evaluation of their performance in the future. Given the shown benefits of telemedicine and student preferences for online learning, incorporating these virtual technologies into the curriculum will be essential to advancing dermatology residency education.
