OBJECTIVES: Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a core procedure used to regenerate bone defects. The aim of the study was to investigate the adherence of Candida albicans on six commercially available polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes used in GBR procedures and the subsequent clinical consequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six commercially available PTFE membranes were tested. Two of the membranes had a textured surface and the other four a plane, nontextured one. C. albicans (ATCC 24433) was cultured for 24 h, and its cell surface hydrophobicity was assessed using a modified method. C. albicans adhesion to membrane discs was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: C. albicans was found to be hydrophobic (77.25%). SEM analysis showed that C. albicans adherence to all membranes examined was characterized by patchy, scattered, and small clustered patterns except for one nontextured membrane with a most rough surface in which a thick biofilm was observed. Real-time PCR quantification revealed significantly greater adhesion of C. albicans cells to PTFE membranes than the control membrane (p ≤ .001) with the membranes having a textured surface exhibiting the highest count of 2680 × 104 cells/ml compared to the count of 707 × 104 cells/mL on those with a nontextured one (p ≤ .001). One membrane with nontextured surface, but with most rough surface was found to exhibit the highest count of 3010 × 104 cells/ml (p ≤ .05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that C. albicans adhesion on membranes' surfaces depends on the degree of surface roughness and/or on the presence of a texture. Textured PTFE membranes and/or membranes high roughness showed significantly more adhered C. albicans cells. These findings can impact the surgeon's choice of GBR membrane and postoperative maintenance.

The tropical and subtropical regions of the world support the growth of the Indian plant Moringa oleifera. It usually goes by the name drumstick tree or horseradish tree and thrives in warm climates. The leaves of the M. oleifera tree are now frequently used as nutrients and nutraceuticals due to their availability of various minerals. While having only very minor antinutritional effects, the leaves are abundant in many beneficial compounds. A recent review of the bioactive components and activity of moringa leaves has focused on both in vivo and in vitro studies. Drumstick leaves have antidiabetic qualities, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antibacterial qualities among other health benefits. Phytochemicals, in addition to minerals and vitamins, are abundant in this vegetable. The majority of these effects, according to a review in the literature, are mostly brought on by the presence of carotenoids, glucosinolates, and phytochemicals. As a value-added component in the production of wholesome meals, moringa is becoming more popular. Despite extensive research into locating and quantifying these advantageous elements in drumstick leaves, bioavailability and bioaccessibility studies were carried out. Beneficial photochemicals are absorbed and digested through incredibly intricate processes that involve several physicochemical and physiological interactions. Therefore, the biological impact of food may be attributed to its various metabolites that can access particular areas of action rather than its original substances. This body of literature offers the most recent findings in scientific research on the bioavailability, health advantages, nutritional profiles, and bioactive activities of moringa leaves as they relate to their use in a range of food products. Drumsticks are frequently used as a food element that promotes health because of their potent protection against a variety of ailments and the presence of environmental pollutants.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are critical in interpreting sensorimotor activities for predicting body movements. However, their efficacy in identifying intralimb movements, such as the dorsiflexion and plantar flexion of the foot, remains suboptimal. This study aims to explore whether various EEG signal quantities can effectively recognize intralimb movements to facilitate the development of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) devices for foot rehabilitation. This research involved twenty-two healthy, right-handed participants. EEG data were collected using 21 electrodes positioned over the motor cortex, while two electromyography (EMG) electrodes recorded the onset of ankle joint movements. The study focused on analyzing slow cortical potential (SCP) and sensorimotor rhythms (SMR) in alpha and beta bands from the EEG. Five key features-fourth-order Autoregressive feature, variance, waveform length, standard deviation, and permutation entropy-were extracted. A modified Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) including Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) algorithms was developed for movement recognition. These were compared against conventional machine learning algorithms, including nonlinear Support Vector Machine (SVM) and k Nearest Neighbourhood (kNN) classifiers. The performance of the proposed models was assessed using two data schemes: within-subject and across-subjects. The findings demonstrated that the GRU and LSTM models significantly outperformed traditional machine learning algorithms in recognizing different EEG signal quantities for intralimb movement. The study indicates that deep learning models, particularly GRU and LSTM, hold superior potential over standard machine learning techniques in identifying intralimb movements using EEG signals. Where the accuracies of LSTM for within and across subjects were 98.87 ± 1.80 % and 87.38 ± 0.86 % respectively. Whereas the accuracy of GRU within and across subjects were 99.18 ± 1.28 % and 86.44 ± 0.69 % respectively. This advancement could significantly benefit the development of BCI devices aimed at foot rehabilitation, suggesting a new avenue for enhancing physical therapy outcomes.

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are available in a wide variety of sequences, view planes, and magnet strengths. A necessary preprocessing step for any automated diagnosis is to identify the MRI sequence, view plane, and magnet strength of the acquired image. Automatic identification of the MRI sequence can be useful in labeling massive online datasets used by data scientists in the design and development of computer aided diagnosis (CAD) tools. This paper presents a deep learning (DL) approach for brain MRI sequence and view plane identification using scans of different data types as input. A 12-class classification system is presented for commonly used MRI scans, including T1, T2-weighted, proton density (PD), fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences in axial, coronal and sagittal view planes. Multiple online publicly available datasets have been used to train the system, with multiple infrastructures. MobileNet-v2 offers an adequate performance accuracy of 99.76% with unprocessed MRI scans and a comparable accuracy with skull-stripped scans and has been deployed in a tool for public use. The tool has been tested on unseen data from online and hospital sources with a satisfactory performance accuracy of 99.84 and 86.49%, respectively.

The aim of the in vitro study was to asses the effect of hyaluronate in conjunction with bovine derived xenografts on the viability, proliferation on day 4, 7 and 10, expression of early osteogenic differentiation marker Alkaline phosphatase on day 14 and 21, collagen, calcium deposition on day 14, 21 and 28 and cellular characteristics, as assessed through live cell image analysis, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, in primary human osteoblasts compared to three bovine xenografts without hyaluronate. All experiments were performed in triplicates. Data were compared between groups and timepoints using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Bonferroni post hoc test were further used for multiple comparison between groups (p < .05) An increase in cell viability (p < .05) and enhanced ALP activity was observed in all xenografts. Specimens containing hyaluronate showed a highest significant difference (23755 ± 29953, p < .0001). The highest levels of calcium (1.60 ± 0.30) and collagen (1.92 ± 0.09, p < .0001) deposition were also observed with hyaluronate loaded groups. The osteoblasts were well attached and spread on all xenograft groups. However, a higher number of cells were observed with hyaluronate functionalized xenograft (76.27 ± 15.11, (p < .0001) in live cell image analysis and they migrated towards the graft boundaries. The biofunctionalization of xenografts with hyaluronate improves their in vitro performance on human osteoblasts. This suggests that hyaluronate might be able to improve the bone regeneration when using such xenografts.

RESUMO

This study presents a brief account of the seminal works on aeroelastic tailoring for aerospace applications. Tailoring using advanced composites is a revolutionary process in the ever-evolving realm of aerospace design. The rapid growth in scientific knowledge and research necessitates the consolidation of the latest research and technological advancements every few years. The current work is part of this process. The major portion of the study covers the latest developments and state-of-the-art research in this century, with a special focus on the last ten years. However, a brief account of the historical background, the theoretical foundation, and a few seminal works from the later part of the previous century and the early part of this century have also been included to form a comprehensive starting point for new researchers entering the field of aeroelastic tailoring and to assist them in identifying the directions of their future endeavours. A critical evaluation of different research contributions, including their advantages, limitations, and prospects for future work, has been presented. Emphasis has been laid on flutter mitigation and aeroelastic optimization for passive aeroelastic control. New material and structural technologies (like curvilinear fibres, tow steering, functional grading, thickness distributions, selective reinforcing, additive manufacturing, and unconventional structural configurations), and novel tailoring optimization techniques (like lamination parameters, blending constraints, active aeroelastic wing design, shape functions, surrogate modelling, reduced order modelling, uncertainty quantification, matrix perturbation theory, modal-strain-energy analyses, and multiple indigenous optimization algorithms) have been identified as active research areas and prospective enabling tools for future work. The challenges faced in the full-scale employment of aeroelastic tailoring include quick, robust, and cost-effective optimization to cater for all design variables and constraints, experimental validation of new methodologies, certification of new material and structural configurations through relevant bodies and standards and gaining the confidence of industrialists for investment in technologies with a few highly focused areas of applications.

CONTEXT: Compared with the relatively benign effects of increased subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume is a causal risk factor for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In rodents, increased VAT volume and triglyceride density and ectopic lipid accumulation in kidneys and liver have been induced by alterations in the gut microbiome. However, few studies have characterized these relationships in humans. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tissue triglyceride content of VAT and SAT, liver, kidneys, and pancreas in male and female adults and assess associations with markers of glucose tolerance, serum insulin, and lipids and characteristics of the gut microbiome. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study of healthy human adults (n = 60) at a clinical research center. Body mass index (BMI), body composition, and oral glucose tolerance were assessed. Microbiome analysis was conducted on stool samples using 16S rRNA v3 amplicon sequencing. The triglyceride content of VAT, SAT, liver, kidney and pancreas were determined by assessing proton density fat fraction (PDFF) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: Higher VAT PDFF and the ratio of VAT to SAT PDFF were related to higher BMI, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, plasma triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. A higher VAT PDFF and VAT to SAT PDFF ratio were associated with lower alpha diversity and altered beta diversity of the gut microbiome. Differences in VAT were associated with higher relative abundance of the phylum Firmicutes, lower relative abundance of the phylum Bacteroidetes, and enrichment of the bacterial genera Dorea, Streptococcus, and Solobacterium. CONCLUSION: VAT PDFF measured with MRI is related to impaired glucose homeostasis, dyslipidemia, and differences in the gut microbiome, independently of the total body fat percentage.

Pancreas transplantation alone (PTA) is a ß cell replacement option for selected patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus; concerns have been raised regarding deterioration in kidney function (KF) after PTA. This retrospective multicenter study assessed actual impact of transplantation and immunosuppression on KF in PTA recipients at three Transplant Centers. The primary composite endpoint 10 years after PTA was >50% eGFR decline, eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 , and/or receiving a kidney transplant (KT). Overall, 822 PTA recipients met eligibility. Median baseline and 10-year eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m2 ) were 76.3 (58.1-100.8) and 51.3 (35.3-65.9), respectively. Primary composite endpoint occurred in 98 patients (53.5%) with 45 experiencing a >50% decrease in eGFR by 10 years post-transplant, 38 eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 49 requiring KT. KF declined most significantly within 6 months post-PTA, more often in females and patients with better preserved GFR up to 5 years with 11.6% kidney failure at 10 years. Patient survival and death-censored graft survival were both 68% at 10 years with overall graft thrombosis rate 8%. KF declined initially after PTA but stabilized with further slow progression. In conclusion, prospective intervention studies are needed to test renal sparing interventions while gathering more granular data.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy in adults occurring in a background of cirrhosis. Peritoneal dissemination of HCC is an unusual presentation with an incidence of 2%-16%. Peritoneal metastasis of an unruptured HCC is extremely uncommon. Despite low yield, ascitic fluid cytology serves as a valuable tool for diagnostic evaluation in a patient of cirrhosis with suspicion of malignant transformation. We present a rare case scenario in an elderly female with cirrhosis where the diagnosis of peritoneal metastasis was established on ascitic fluid cytology and confirmed by immunocytochemistry. This report illustrates the unique clinical presentation of an unruptured HCC with its cytological features and a brief review of literature.

PURPOSE: The study aims to investigate the mediating roles of leadership identification and organizational identification linking abusive supervision to employees' turnover intention. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using a self-administer survey design, data were collected from 229 nursing workforce employed in hospitals located in Karachi. FINDINGS: The research findings show that abusive supervision has a considerably positive influence on turnover intention. The findings also show that abusive supervision negatively affects nurses' leadership identification and organizational identification. Leadership identification and organizational identification were found to be negatively related to nurses' turnover intention. Finally, leadership identification and organizational identification were found to parallelly mediate the relationship between abusive supervision and turnover intention. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This study helped uncover the previously unknown parallel mediating mechanism of organizational identification and leadership identification. Additionally, abusive supervision was found to negatively affect employees' leadership identification.

Membranes have been used for treating periodontal defects and play a crucial role in guided bone regeneration applications. Nano graphene oxide have been exploited in tissue engineering due to its biomechanical properties. Its composite formulations with hydroxyapatite and chitosan with controlled degradation could aid in becoming part of a surface layer in a functionally graded membrane. The aim of the study was to synthesize chitosan and composite formulations of nano graphene oxide, hydroxyapatite and chlorhexidine digluconate using solvent casting technique and to characterize the physiochemical, mechanical, water vapor transmission rate (barrier), degradation and antimicrobial potential of the membranes. Altogether four different membranes were prepared (CH, CCG, 3511 and 3322). Results revealed the chemical interactions of hydroxyapatite, chitosan and nanographene oxide due to inter and intra molecular hydrogen bonding. The tensile strength of 3322 (33.72 ± 6.3 MPa) and 3511 (32.06 ± 5.4 MPa) was higher than CH (27.46 ± 9.6 MPa). CCG showed the lowest water vapor transmission rate (0.23 ± 0.01 g/h.m2) but the highest weight loss at day 14 (76.6 %). 3511 showed a higher drug release after 72 h (55.6 %) Significant biofilm growth inhibition was observed for all membranes. 3511 showed complete inhibition against A. actinomycetemcomitans. Detailed characterization of the synthesized membranes revealed that 3511 composite membrane proved to be a promising candidate for use as a surface layer of membranes for guided bone regeneration of periodontal lesions.

The etiology of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma (MM) is still obscure as are the processes that enable the progression of MGUS to MM. Understanding the unique vs. shared transcriptomes can potentially elucidate why individuals develop one or the other. Furthermore, highlighting key pathways and genes involved in the pathogenesis of MM or the development of MGUS to MM may allow the discovery of novel drug targets and therapies. We employed STARGEO platform to perform three separate meta-analysis to compare MGUS and MM transcriptomes. For these analyses we tagged (1) 101 MGUS patient plasma cells from bone marrow samples and 64 plasma cells from healthy controls (2) 383 MM patient CD138+ cells from bone marrow and the 101 MGUS samples in the first analysis as controls (3) 517 MM patient peripheral blood samples and 97 peripheral blood samples from healthy controls. We then utilized Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) to analyze the unique genomic signatures within and across these samples. Our study identified genes that may have unique roles in MGUS (GADD45RA and COMMD3), but also newly identified signaling pathways (EIF2, JAK/STAT, and MYC) and gene activity (NRG3, RBFOX2, and PARP15) in MGUS that have previously been shown to be involved in MM suggesting a spectrum of molecular overlap. On the other hand, genes such as DUSP4, RN14, LAMP5, differentially upregulated in MM, may be seen as tipping the scales from benignity to malignancy and could serve as drug targets or novel biomarkers for risk of progression. Furthermore, our analysis of MM identified newly associated gene/pathway activity such as inhibition of Wnt-signaling and defective B cell development. Finally, IPA analysis, suggests the multifactorial, oncogenic qualities of IFNγ signaling in MM may be a unifying pathway for these diverse mechanisms and prompts the need for further studies.

Objectives: C5 inhibitors such as eculizumab and ravulizumab are the first-line treatment in the management of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). However, some patients develop novel symptoms as part of their treatment with eculizumab, and the disease is termed as eculizumab refractory PNH. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review on the available treatment modalities for the management of eculizumab refractory PNH. Methods: Two authors independently searched two databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A total of 70 studies were obtained: 4 out 70 studies were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Results: Four studies were found to meet the inclusion criteria of our study. Two studies were published in 2021 and two studies were published in 2020. All four studies were multicenter clinical trials. Two studies were phase III clinical trials, one study was a phase II clinical trial, and one study was a phase I clinical trial. Two studies were about pegcetacoplan, one was about danicopan, and one was about iptacopan. Conclusion: Based upon the findings of our systematic review, we recommend an individualized treatment plan based on the mechanism of eculizumab refractoriness and the mechanism of PNH breakthrough. This recommendation is subject to the available resources and clinical expertise available at different hospitals. More studies using study designs such as randomized controlled trials comparing multiple drugs should be performed to accurately assess the different medications and aid in designing guidelines of the management of eculizumab refractory PNH. PURPOSE: To synthesise and characterise nanosilver sodium fluoride (NSSF) and assess the effect of applying this formulation in vitro on artificially demineralised root dentin lesions, compared with the application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF), sodium fluoride (NAF) or no treatment, in terms of mechanical, chemical and ultrastructural properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: NSSF was prepared using 0.5 wt% chitosan solution. On 40 extracted human molars, the buccal aspect of the cervical thirds of roots were prepared and divided into 4 groups of 10 each: control (no treatment), NSSF, SDF and NaF (n = 10). The specimens were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface and cross-sectional microhardness and nano-indentation tests were performed to determine the mineral and carbonate content, microhardness, and nanohardness, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the differences between the different treatment groups for the set parameters using parametric and non-parametric tests. Tukey's and Dunnet's T3 post-hoc tests were further used for multiple comparisons between groups (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The control group (no treatment) was found to have statistically significantly lower mean scores for surface and cross-sectional microhardness compared with all other test groups (NaF, NSSF and SDF) (p < 0.05). Spearman's rank correlation test showed statistically insignificant differences between the mineral-to-matrix ratio (M:M) and carbonate content of all groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of root lesions with NSSF yielded comparable results to SDF and NaF under in-vitro conditions.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial Gram-negative pathogen that often displays multidrug resistance. Discovering new antibiotics against A. baumannii has proven challenging through conventional screening approaches. Fortunately, machine learning methods allow for the rapid exploration of chemical space, increasing the probability of discovering new antibacterial molecules. Here we screened ~7,500 molecules for those that inhibited the growth of A. baumannii in vitro. We trained a neural network with this growth inhibition dataset and performed in silico predictions for structurally new molecules with activity against A. baumannii. Through this approach, we discovered abaucin, an antibacterial compound with narrow-spectrum activity against A. baumannii. Further investigations revealed that abaucin perturbs lipoprotein trafficking through a mechanism involving LolE. Moreover, abaucin could control an A. baumannii infection in a mouse wound model. This work highlights the utility of machine learning in antibiotic discovery and describes a promising lead with targeted activity against a challenging Gram-negative pathogen.

Introduction: Globally, urothelial bladder carcinoma is a disease which carries a poor prognosis. There are various treatment modalities for urothelial bladder carcinoma with intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy being the most efficacious intravesical therapy and the treatment of choice for patients with carcinoma in situ. A number of chemotherapeutic drugs are also available for the management of Ta/T1 tumors such as mitomycin C and epirubicin. However, relapse and progression is quite common. The optimal management of patients with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive disease remains to be a challenge. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review on the treatment modalities available for the management of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive carcinoma in situ and urothelial bladder carcinoma in patients who are ineligible or decline radical cystectomy. Methods: Two authors independently searched three databases on the treatment modalities available for the management of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive carcinoma in situ and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive urothelial bladder carcinoma. Results: The systematic search resulted in 15 studies. We recommend the use of intravesical CG0070 adenovirus or hyperthermic intravesical chemotherapy mitomycin C in patients with carcinoma in situ only disease. In patients with carcinoma in situ ± Ta/T1 disease, we recommend the use of intravesical radiofrequency-induced chemohyperthermia or electromotive drug administration of mitomycin C. In patients who have Ta/T1 disease, we recommend the use of either hyperthermic intravesical chemotherapy epirubicin or electromotive drug administration mitomycin C followed by chemohyperthermia mitomycin C. If any of these second line therapies fail, an alternative regimen would be a combination of gemcitabine, cabazitaxel, and cisplatin. Conclusion: This recommendation is subject to the available resources and clinical expertise available in different hospitals. More studies using study designs such as randomized controlled trials comparing multiple drugs with larger sample sizes and regular follow-up intervals should be performed to accurately assess the different medications and aid in designing guidelines to guide the management of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive non-muscle invasive intravesical bladder cancer.

To formulate a dental bleaching agent with strawberry extract that has potent bleaching properties and antimicrobial efficacy. Enamel specimens (3 × 3 × 2 mm3) were prepared. Quaternary Ammonium Silane (CaC2 enriched) was homogenized with fresh strawberries: Group 1: supernatant strawberry (10 g) extract < Group 2: supernatant strawberry (10 g) extract + 15%HA (Hydroxyapatite) < Group 3: supernatant strawberry (10 g) extract + 15% (HA-2%k21) < Group 4: supernatant strawberry (20 g) extract only (20 g strawberries) < Group 5: supernatant strawberry (20 g) extract + 15% HA < Group 6: supernatant strawberry (20 g) extract + 15% (HA-2%K21) < Group 7: In-office Opalescence Boost 35%. Single-colony lactobacillus was examined using confocal microscopy identifying bacterial growth and inhibition in presence of bleaching agents using 300 µL aliquot of each bacterial culture. Images were analysed by illuminating with a 488 nm argon/helium laser beam. Colour difference (∆E00) was calculated using an Excel spreadsheet implementation of the CIEDE2000 colour difference formula and colour change measured between after staining and after bleaching. Scanning electron microscope was used to image specimens. Raman spectra were collected, and enamel slices were used for STEM/TEM analysis. HPLC was used for strawberry extract analysis. Nano-indentation was performed and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Antioxidant activity was determined along with molecular simulation. hDPSCs were expanded for Alamar Blue Analysis and SEM. Mean colour change was significantly reduced in group 1 compared to other groups (p < 0.05). CLSM showed detrimental effects of different strawberry extracts on bioflms, especially with antimicrobial (p < 0.05). Groups 1, 2 and 3 showed flatter/irregular surfaces with condensation of anti-microbial in group 3. In strawberry specimens, bands predominate at 960 cm-1. HPLC determined the strawberry extracts content. Molecular simulation verified interaction between calcium and polyphenol components. XPS peak-fitted high-resolution corresponding results of Ca2p3/2 and Ca2p1/2 for all k21 groups. Combination of 10 g strawberry extract supernatant and 15% (hydroxyapatite 2%k21) improved the whiteness and provided additional antimicrobial potential. The novel strawberry extract and antimicrobial based dental formulation had immediate bleaching effect without promoting significant changes in enamel morphology.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability and the surface roughness of a bulk-fill composite flow (SDR® Plus) by comparison to an ORMOCER-based composite (Ceram.x® Universal SphereTEC™) in order to confirm the validity of using SDR® Plus in the anterior region and to allow the prediction of its long-term results. Material and Methods: 35 composite specimens of the same shade (A2), thickness (2mm) and shape of both types of composite were prepared. The specimens were cured and polished according to the manufacturer's instructions. The initial shade of the specimens was measured using a calibrated EasyShade spectrophotometer. The initial surface roughness of the specimens was measured by AFM. Afterwards, the specimens were subjected to an accelerated aging procedure through thermo-cycling, a coffee stain challenge and brushing to simulate two years in the oral environment. The shade and surface roughness of the specimens were measured again after the accelerated aging procedure. Results: The mean ΔE was significantly larger than 3.368 in Ceram.x® group (-p-value<0.001) and SDR® Plus group (-p-value<0.001). The mean surface roughness has significantly increased for both groups after aging with no significant difference between the two groups. It however remained clinically acceptable. Conclusions: SDR® Plus and Ceram.x® showed similar surface roughness when subjected to the same testing conditions. Concerning the color stability, both composites displayed noticeable discoloration, with higher ΔE values registered for Ceram.x®.
