RESUMO

PURPOSE: To present the results of cataract surgery with IOLs implantation complicated by posterior capsule tear. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 38 eyes of 38 patients with cataract, operated on between August 1993 and May 1994 were examined. In all cases posterior capsule tear occurred during surgery but the IOLs were supported by the residual capsule or, when the tear was large, by the residue of the anterior capsule with haptics being placed in the ciliary sulcus. RESULTS: Useful visual acuity was achieved in 78% of the eyes. The main complications observed in post-operative period were increase of intraocular pressure in 11 eyes, dislocation of IOL in 4 and dyscoria in 24 eyes. CONCLUSION: The applied surgical technique seems to be very useful in cases of posterior capsule tear but in each case the surgeon must decide what is the best for the eye: anterior or posterior chamber IOL.

RESUMO

The study was aimed at comparison of chemiluminescence of granulocytes during their incubation with suspensions of Pseudomonas strains isolated from various sources. The study was performed on 136 strains isolated from clinical material. The results were correlated with resistance of these bacteria to bactericidal activity of serum and their ability to produce proteolytic enzymes. It was found that strains isolated from blood and pus weakly activate granulocytes in contrary to bacteria isolated from urine and feces. Ability to pronounced activation of granulocytes was without relation to susceptibility of a given strain to action of serum. But it correlated negatively with ability to production of proteolytic enzymes. These observations indicate existence of relation between characteristics of strain and type of clinical material from which it was isolated.

RESUMO

The material consisted of 141 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from various sources and derived from children treatment in the Institute of Pediatrics. Adherence properties of these strains were tested by application of an own micromethod with application of 96 well titration plates. Proteolytic activity was investigated by means of gel radial diffusion with application of caseine and elastin as substrates. It was established that reverse correlation of adherence and proteolytic activity exists.

RESUMO

136 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were tested for human serum bactericidal effect. Hundred (73%) of clinical isolates were resistant and 36 (27%) were effectively killed by human (undiluted or even 1000 times diluted) serum. Fifty six out of 136 (41.1%) had proteolytic activity and parallelly were resistant to bactericidal activity of normal human serum. Among serum susceptible strains only 6 out of 136 (4.4%) had proteolytic activity.

RESUMO

An excellent correlation between the integrating plate (IP) and the photoacoustic methods for measuring aerosol light absorption has been found for airborne graphitic carbon in diesel vehicle exhaust. However, the regression coefficient depends on the orientation of the Teflon membrane filter during the IP analysis. With the collected particulates between the filter and the integrating plate, the IP response is 1.85 times that for the filter reversed. In either case the response ratio of the IP method to the photoacoustic method is >1.0, i.e., 2.43 vs 1.30. The IP calibration is also probably dependent on the nature of the filter medium.
