RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the extent of agreement between the findings of ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the assessment of anterior disc displacement (ADD), with or without reduction, and to assess the sensitivity, specificity and the accuracy of the US examination in establishing diagnosis. Fifty-two temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in 52 patients with chronic TMJ pain were examined by US and MRI with respect to ADD, with, and without reduction of the TMJ. The level of agreement between US and MRI findings was evaluated. The sensitivity, specificity, and the accuracy of US were found to be respectively 91%, 16% and 82% in the assessment of ADD; 70%, 38% and 57% in ADD with reduction; 50%, 89% and 76% in ADD without reduction. The findings of both methods were in agreement with each other. US method is fairly sensitive especially in detecting ADD, and it is very reliable in determining the absence of ADD without reduction. However, it was not found to be as quite effective in demonstrating ADD whether it was with or without reduction.

RESUMO

This study examined the effects of vascular bundle implantation into a bone graft. Vascularized and nonvascularized autografts, allografts, and xenografts were placed inside defects in the proximal tibia in rabbits. Evaluation using radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, bone scintigraphy, and microscopy showed autografts fused more rapidly than allografts and xenografts, and the majority of the vascularized grafts were incorporated completely. Autografts emerged as the gold standard. These findings indicate vessel implantation enhances and accelerates vascularization, new bone formation, and incorporation in autografts, allografts, and xenografts.

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the dispersed or nondispersed form of the extruded disk material (EDM) on the neurological status and surgical outcomes in Hansen thoracolumbar intervertebral disk disease Type I (IVDD-I). Medical records of 40 dogs with IVDD-I were reviewed, including neurologic status on admission, findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intraoperative findings, and surgical outcomes. In MRI evaluations, EDM was on the right in 16, on the left in 18, and centrally in 6 cases; in all cases, findings were confirmed by surgery. Extruded disk material was localized and classified as dispersed disk (DD) or nondispersed disk (NDD) according to its dispersion in the epidural space on MRI. Twenty-five dogs had DD and 15 had NDD on both MRI and surgery. There was no significant difference between DD and NDD in preoperative neurological status and surgical outcomes (P > 0.05).
