RESUMO

A physics-based deep learning (DL) method termed Phynet is proposed for modeling the nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers totally independent of the ground truth. The presented Phynet is a combination of a handcrafted neural network and the nonlinear Schrödinger physics model. In particular, Phynet is optimized through physics loss generated by the interaction between the network and the physical model rather than the supervised loss. The inverse pulse propagation problem is leveraged to exemplify the performance of Phynet when in comparison to the typical DL method under the same structure and datasets. The results demonstrate that Phynet is able to precisely restore the initial pulse profiles with varied initial widths and powers, while revealing a similar prediction accuracy compared with the typical DL method. The proposed Phynet method can be expected to break the severe bottleneck of the traditional DL method in terms of relying on abundant labeled data during the training phase, which thus brings new insight for modeling and predicting the nonlinear dynamics of the fibers.

RESUMO

A governing equation of the six-wave fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) for the power and phase difference evolution of the six interacting waves is deduced. To optimize the gain of the six-wave FOPA, a multivariate stochastic optimization algorithm, i.e., the genetic algorithm (GA), is applied. The effect of pump depletion on the gain characteristic of the six-wave FOPA is emphasized and the effect of the fiber length, the wavelength, and the power of two pumps on bandwidth, flatness, and magnitude of the gain spectrum has also been studied. A broader and flatter six-wave FOPA gain is obtained by adopting optimum design parameters, which theoretically provide a uniform gain of 65 dB with 0.3 dB uniformity over a 110 nm bandwidth for the six-wave FOPA.

RESUMO

Al-silicate fibers have excellent manufacturing quality. Unfortunately, high-Yb doping concentration may be limited by severe losses induced by photodarkening phenomenon. In this paper we demonstrate for the first time that Al-silicate Yb-doped fibers with high-inversion and doping concentration above 1 wt% can be successfully used by implementing a simple optical bleaching scheme. A co-injection into the active fiber of a few mW of light at around 550 nm wavelength successfully eliminates almost all photodarkening induced losses. We demonstrate operation at above 90% of the pristine output power level in several lasers with up to 30% Yb ions in the excited state. These results may allow using Yb-doped Al-silicate fibers with doping level increased by one order of magnitude. Finally, we provide a comprehensive picture of main parameters affecting photobleaching performance and, to the best of our knowledge, we report the first quantitative measurement of the Ytterbium excited state absorption cross-section in the visible range.

RESUMO

In this Letter, the lifetime temporal reduction in ytterbium-doped aluminosilicate fibers due to pump-induced photodarkening (PD) has been reported. A linear correlation between lifetime reduction at equilibrium state and equilibrium losses due to the PD phenomenon was demonstrated. A squared-law dependence between lifetime reduction and dopant concentration (percent by weight) suggests a possible correction term for the rate equations system which allows improving its accuracy. Finally, a quenching effect was also observed for different pump power levels in order to find the corresponding lifetime value for different inversion levels. The quantitative analysis allows determination of the PD quenching term in the laser rate equations system to properly model a laser device that may be affected by this process.

RESUMO

In this work, the influence of photodarkening (PD) and photobleaching (PB) on the lasing features of the ytterbium-doped aluminosilicate fiber lasers is examined. Simultaneous PD and PB with 633 nm irradiation was monitored at the lasing wavelength of 1070 nm and compared with individually caused PD and PB effects. The variation of laser threshold and slope efficiency was reported. By analyzing the laser performances it was found that the ratio of excess loss at 633 and 1070 nm is expected to be less than 20. In addition, considerable mitigation of the PD with 633 nm light irradiation is demonstrated.

RESUMO

We report on an extensive investigation of photodarkening in Yb-doped silica fibers. A set of similar fibers, covering a large Yb concentration range, was made so as to compare the photodarkening induced losses. Careful measurements were made to ensure equal and uniform inversion for all the tested fibers. The results show that, with the specific set-up, the stretching parameter obtained through fitting has a very limited variation. This gives more meaning to the fitting parameters. Results tend to indicate a square law dependence of the concentration of excited ions on the final saturated loss. We also demonstrate self-similarity of loss evolution when experimental curves are simply normalized to fitting parameters. This evidence of self-similarity also supports the possibility of introducing a preliminary figure of merit for Yb-doped fiber. This will allow the impact of photodarkening on laser/amplifier devices to be evaluated.

RESUMO

The present work describes photodarkening from the viewpoint of cooperative luminescence. The temporal evolution of both effects was measured simultaneously by means of ytterbium doped aluminosilicate fibers for concentrations up to 1.8 wt% Yb3+. The quadratic dependence of photodarkening and cooperative luminescence versus dopant concentration was observed. The change in the photodarkening and cooperative luminescence mutual dynamics for highly and low doped fibers is ascribed to a different ion number which forms the cluster. Cooperative luminescence is proved to be a natural probe for photodarkening since it provides new pieces of information and contributes to the photodarkening mechanism description.

RESUMO

In this paper we calculated, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the cross relaxation parameter of Tm(3+) ions in tellurite glasses over a wide range of concentrations: from 0.36 mol% up to 10 mol%. A new measurement approach based on emission spectra monitoring is proposed. This method is very simple and allows to measure even very highly doped samples. The obtained values of cross-relaxation parameter show a linear dependence with respect to dopant concentration over the full investigated interval, suggesting a dipole-dipole interaction process. The measured slope is 1.81x10(-17) cm(3) s(-1) mol%(-1).

RESUMO

We describe an efficient erbium-doped waveguide amplifier insensitive to output power variation by means of optical gain clamping. Output power suitable for metro applications and gain flatness over full C-band are demonstrated. We also show that this technology is suitable for transparent WDM ring network. In fact the possible recirculation of amplified spontaneous emission noise or laser power leaking from mirrors will not impact the device performance making robust to transients for next generation reconfigurable WDM ring networks.

RESUMO

Optical waveguide writing is demonstrated by means of a diode-pumped cavity-dumped Yb:glass femtosecond laser oscillator with a pulse energy of 270 nJ at a 166-kHz repetition rate. Waveguides realized on an Er:Yb-doped phosphate glass are almost perfectly mode matched to standard single-mode fibers at 1.55 microm and show a 1.2-dB net gain in a standard telecommunications amplifier setup. Waveguide writing with a compact femtosecond laser oscillator is an important step toward introducing this technique into an industrial context.

RESUMO

A fiber-coupled tunable Er-Yb:glass minilaser is presented with output power of 40 mW. The laser can be stepwise tuned in single-frequency operation from 1530 to 1560 nm by compressing a fiber Bragg grating that provides selective feedback. Constant output power (fluctuation < 0.8 dB) over the full tuning range is demonstrated. The relative intensity noise spectrum was measured to be < 150 dB/Hz for frequencies > 2 MHz.

RESUMO

A comparison between the use of the fringe-side and the frequency-modulation methods to frequency stabilize diode-pumped Tm-Ho:YAG lasers against linear absorption lines of CO2 near 2.1 microm is reported. Frequency stability was evaluated by monitoring of the beat signal between two independently stabilized Tm-Ho:YAG systems. Frequency instability levels of approximately 20 and approximately 400 kHz for 1-s integration time were achieved by the frequency-modulation and fringe-side methods, respectively.
