RESUMO

Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. While new therapeutic modalities have been available for Alzheimer's disease, there is currently no effective treatment for VaD. We encountered two cases with VaD who recovered their cognitive function to normal levels after ventriculoatrial shunt (VA shunt). Both cases complained cognitive impairment shortly after cerebral infarctions. Their brain images showed ventricular dilatation without the findings of disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus, which is regarded as characteristic for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Both cases were initially diagnosed as VaD by board neurosurgeons. However, since they showed positive response to lumbar tap test, VA shunts were performed. Both cases recovered their cognitive function to normal level. Their excellent cognitive outcomes after VA shunts indicate that many iNPH patients with lacunar infarcts may possibly be misdiagnosed as VaD.

Objective: Carotid artery stenting embolic protection devices offer various options, among which distal filter protection is the simplest and easiest to handle. However, compared to balloon protection systems, distal filter protection has more embolic complications. Therefore, we explored the risk factors of distal filter protection, intending to achieve a safer carotid artery stenting. This retrospective study was conducted to identify prognostic factors following carotid artery stenting with only distal filter protection from July 2010 to June 2021. Methods: Information on patient background, procedures and devices, and complications was collected using medical records. The data pertaining to 187 patients were analyzed after excluding the data of patients in whom other protection devices (8 cases) were used. We used FilterWire EZ as the first choice for embolic protection device and SpiderFX when the patients had difficult-to-cross lesions. Results: The patients' mean age was 71.9 ± 6.9 years, and 72 (38.5%) were symptomatic. Symptomatic (odds ratio: 2.02, p = 0.035) and difficult-to-cross lesions (odds ratio: 3.63, p = 0.0013) were factors independently associated with symptomatic complications. Conclusion: This retrospective single-center study established independent prognostic factors for carotid artery stenting with distal filter protection. For patients with symptomatic lesions and severe stenosis or bends that are difficult to pass through, it is necessary to be careful when performing carotid artery stenting with distal filter protection.

Over half of the pharmaceutical industry's capital investments are related to the purification of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Thus, a cost-effective purification process with a highly concentrated solution is urgently required. In addition, the purification process should be nonthermal because most APIs and their intermediates are temperature-sensitive. This study investigated a high-degree concentration organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) membrane process. A polyketone-based thin-film composite hollow fiber membrane with a polyamide selective layer on the bore surface was used as the OSFO membrane to achieve a high tolerance for organic solvents and an effective concentration. MeOH, sucrose octaacetate (SoA), and 2M polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400)/MeOH solution were used as the solvent, model API, and a draw solution (DS), respectively. OSFO was performed at room temperature (23 ± 3 °C). Consequently, the 11 wt% SoA/MeOH solution was concentrated to 52 wt% without any SoA leakage into the DS. To our knowledge, there are no studies in which up to a 5 wt% concentration by OSFO has been demonstrated. However, the final feed solution contained 17 wt% PEG-400. This study demonstrates the promising potential of OSFO for pharmaceutical pre-concentration and the technical problems that need to be solved for social implementation.

PURPOSE: Observation is the first management option in asymptomatic meningiomas, but when an enlargement or mass effect is observed, surgery is indicated. This study is aimed at exploring risk factors for complications and recurrence after surgery for asymptomatic meningioma. We also examined the impact of preoperative tumor embolization, which is considered controversial. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 109 patients with primary asymptomatic meningiomas surgically treated at our institute between April 2007 and March 2021. Patients who only had headaches as a nonspecific complaint were included in the asymptomatic group. Complications, time to recurrence, and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) score were the endpoints of the study. Risk factors for complications and recurrence were explored. Moreover, the effect of the resection on nonspecific headaches was also explored. RESULTS: The permanent postoperative complication rate related to the surgical procedure was 1.8%. Of the total, 107 patients (98.2%) with asymptomatic meningiomas who were surgically treated achieved a GOS score of 5 1 year after the operation. Preoperative headache was present in 31 patients and improved postoperatively in 21 patients. Multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard model showed that preoperative tumor embolization with > 80% resolution of tumor staining (p < 0.001) was negatively related to recurrence, whereas age (p = 0.046) and Simpson grade IV resection (p = 0.041) were positively related to recurrence. CONCLUSION: Although surgery for asymptomatic meningiomas can, in many cases, be safe, it is not free of complications Thus, surgical intervention for asymptomatic meningiomas should be considered cautiously. However, more than half the patients with headaches showed improvement. Simpson grade IV resection cases should be assessed for recurrence, and preoperative tumor embolization might be effective in controlling recurrence.

α-Lactalbumin is an essential protein with multiple roles in physiological and the nutritional functionalities, such as diabetic prevention, blood pressure stabilization, and cancer cell inhibition. In the present work, polyethersulfone (PES)-based membranes were developed by incorporating Pluronic F127 and carbon nanotubes with single- and multi-walled dimensions (Sw-Cnts and Mw-Cnts) as additives. The resulting membranes were evaluated for use in the filtration of α-lactalbumin protein solution. Four series of membranes, including PES pristine membrane, were fabricated via the phase inversion process. The characteristics of the membrane samples were analyzed in terms of morphology, membrane surface hydrophilicity and roughness, and surface chemistry. The characterization results show that the incorporation of additive increased the surface wettability by reducing the surface water contact angle from 80.4° to 64.1° by adding F127 and Mw-Cnt additives. The highest pure water permeability of 135 L/(m2·h·bar) was also exhibited by the PES/F127/Mw-Cnt membrane. The performance of the modified membranes was clearly better than the pristine PSF for α-lactalbumin solution filtration. The permeability of α-lactalbumin solution increased from 9.0 L/(m2·h·bar) for the pristine PES membrane to 10.5, 11.0 and 11.5 L/(m2·h·bar) for membranes loaded with Pluronic F127, Sw-Cnts, and Mw-Cnts, respectively. Those increments corresponded to 17, 22, and 28%. Such increments could be achieved without altering the α-lactalbumin rejections of 80%. Remarkably, the rejection for the membrane loaded with Sw-Cnts even increased to 89%.

Recently, the demand for the recovery of valuable solutes from organic solvents/water mixtures has increased in various fields. Furthermore, due to the abundance of heat-sensitive valuable solutes, the demand for non-heated concentration technologies has increased. In this study, the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) using hydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes was investigated to confirm the possibility of recovering valuable solutes from organic solvents/water mixtures as a non-heated process. The DCMD with 1000 ppm NaCl aqueous solution achieved 0.8 kg/m2·h of vapor flux and >99.9% of NaCl retention, even at feed and coolant temperatures of 25 and 10 °C, respectively. Furthermore, when DCMD was conducted under various conditions, including feed temperatures of 25, 35 and 45 °C, and organic solvent concentration of 15, 30 and 50 wt%, using ethanol/water and acetonitrile/water mixtures containing 1000 ppm NaCl. A surfactant was also used as a valuable solute, in addition to NaCl. As a result, it was found that the total vapor flux increased with increasing temperature and concentration of organic solvents, as the partial vapor pressure of the organic solvents increased. Additionally, no solute leaked under any condition, even when the surfactant was used as a valuable solute.

Polydopamine has been widely used as an additive to enhance membrane fouling resistance. This study reports the effects of two-step dopamine-to-polydopamine modification on the permeation, antifouling, and potential anti-UV properties of polyethersulfone (PES)-based ultrafiltration membranes. The modification was performed through a two-step mechanism: adding the dopamine additive followed by immersion into Tris-HCl solution to allow polymerization of dopamine into polydopamine (PDA). The results reveal that the step of treatment, the concentration of dopamine in the first step, and the duration of dipping in the Tris solution in the second step affect the properties of the resulting membranes. Higher dopamine loadings improve the pure water flux (PWF) by more than threefold (15 vs. 50 L/m2·h). The extended dipping period in the Tris alkaline buffer leads to an overgrowth of the PDA layer that partly covers the surface pores which lowers the PWF. The presence of dopamine or polydopamine enhances the hydrophilicity due to the enrichment of hydrophilic catechol moieties which leads to better anti-fouling. Moreover, the polydopamine film also improves the membrane resistance to UV irradiation by minimizing photodegradation's occurrence.

Biofouling on the membrane surface leads to performance deficiencies in membrane filtration. In this study, the application of ginger extract as a bio-based additive to enhance membrane antibiofouling properties was investigated. The extract was dispersed in a dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) solvent together with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to enhance biofouling resistance of the resulting membrane due to its antibiotic property. The concentrations of the ginger extract in the dope solution were varied in the range of 0-0.1 wt %. The antibacterial property of the resulting membranes was assessed using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. The results show an inhibition zone formed around the PVDF/ginger membrane against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrating the efficacy of the residual ginger extract in the membrane matrix to impose the antibiofouling property. The addition of the ginger extract also enhanced the hydrophilicity in the membrane surface by lowering the contact angle from 93° to 85°, which was in good agreement with the increase in the pure water flux of up to 62%.

This paper reports the fabrication of polyethersulfone membranes via in situ hydrogen peroxide-assisted polymerization of dopamine. The dopamine and hydrogen peroxide were introduced into the dope solution where the polymerization occurred, resulting in a single-step additive formation during membrane fabrication. The effectivity of modification was evaluated through characterizations of the resulting membranes in terms of chemical functional groups, surface morphology, porosity, contact angle, mechanical strength and filtration of humic acid solution. The results confirm that the polydopamine was formed during the dope solution mixing through peroxide-assisted polymerization as proven by the appearance of peaks associated OH and NH groups in the resulting membranes. The presence of polydopamine residual in the membrane matric enhances the pore properties in terms of size and porosity (by a factor of 10), and by lowering the hydrophilicity (from 69° to 53°) which leads to enhanced filtration flux of up to 217 L/m2 h. The presence of the residual polydopamine also enhances membrane surface hydrophilicity which improve the antifouling properties as shown from the flux recovery ratio of > 80%.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) have many advantages, such as producing methane gas for energy generation and little excess sludge. However, membrane fouling is a serious problem because the foulant, which causes the membrane to foul, may get rejected by the membrane and accumulate in the reactor, resulting in an acceleration of membrane fouling. However, there is no information related to a change in the foulant concentration in an AnMBR. Therefore, we examined the changes in the foulant concentration in the reactor, related to membrane fouling in an AnMBR. For the influent, reactor solution, and effluent, the concentration of each component of the foulant was analyzed by using a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector (LC-OCD). It was found that fouling in the AnMBR was closely related to the components in the reactor, and the main foulant of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was biopolymers (BPs). BP accumulated in the reactor because of a high rejection by the UF membrane. However, once the BP accumulated in the reactor was biodegraded, the concentration of BP decreased with time even under a high organic loading rate of 1.9kg TOC/m3/day.

OBJECTIVE: Calprotectin is a heterocomplex of S100A8 and S100A9 and is mainly secreted from neutrophils, monocytes, and chondrocytes in inflammatory condition. Calprotectin binds to RAGE and TLR4 and induces the expression of proinflammatory chemokines and cytokines in various cells. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to gingival inflammation and alveolar bone resorption. Calprotectin levels in gingival crevicular fluid of periodontitis patients are higher than healthy patients. In the present study, the effects of S100A8 and S100A9 on the expressions of proinflammatory cytokines and bone metabolism-related factors in mouse osteocyte-like cells (MLO-Y4-A2) were investigated. DESIGN: MLO-Y4-A2 cells were treated with S100A8 and S100A9, and the expressions of RAGE, TLR4, RANKL, and several inflammatory cytokines were analyzed by PCR and Western blotting or ELISA methods. To investigate the intracellular signaling pathways, phosphorylation of MAPK and STAT3 was determined by Western blotting, and chemical specific inhibitors and siRNAs were used. RESULTS: Expressions of IL-6 and RANKL were increased by treatment with S100A9 but not S100A8. However, both S100A8 and S100A9 did not change expression of IL-1ß, IL-8, and TNF-α. Although RAGE and TLR4 expressions were not upregulated by S100A9 treatment, transfection of siRNA for RAGE and TLR4 significantly decreased IL-6 and RANKL expressions. In addition, S100A9 activated p38, ERK, and STAT3 signaling pathways, and inhibitors for these factors significantly decreased S100A9-induced IL-6 and RANKL expressions. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that S100A9 induces IL-6 and RANKL production via engagement with RAGE and TLR4 signalings in osteocytes and suggested that S100A9 may play important roles in the periodontal alveolar bone destruction.

This paper reports the application of silica derived from natural biomasses of rice husk and bagasse ashes as membrane modifying agents. The modification was conducted on poly(ether sulfone) (PES) membrane by blending the silica into the dope solution. The modification was aimed to improve the structure and hydraulic performance of the resulting PES membrane. The effects of silica addition to the membrane system were evaluated through the analysis of change in chemical structure using ATR-FTIR, surface morphological change using AFM, and surface hydrophilicity using water contact angle measurement. SEM and AFM images show the silica loading significantly affects the membranes morphologies. Silica loading also promotes hydrophilic property as shown by the decrease in water contact angles from 82° to 52-60° due to the presence of polar groups in some residual silica in the membrane matrix. Silica blending also leads to the formation of membranes with higher permeability of up to three folds but lower humic acid rejection (78-62%). The findings indicate the role of silica to enhance the membrane pore size. The ability of membrane to reject humic acid (of 0.8 nm minimum diameter) indicating that the resulting membranes were in between tight ultrafiltration and nanofiltration type. Nonetheless, applying too-high silica concentration decreased the humic acid rejection most likely due to over enlargement of the membrane pore size.

Energy-efficient membrane technology has received tremendous attention for the separation of organic molecules; however, the separation of molecules of less than 100 Da has remained challenging. Herein, a membrane fabricated from interfacial polymerization on a polyketone support was used as an organic solvent reverse osmosis (OSRO) membrane for the separation of organic liquid mixtures. The chemically stable and highly cross-linked selective layer exhibited outstanding separation factors toward large nonpolar molecules from small polar ones with high fluxes. For example, separation factors of 8.4, 11.1, 14.9, and 38.0 were achieved toward toluene, pentane, hexane, and heptane (10 wt % in mixtures), respectively, from methanol solution at 3 MPa, with fluxes around 5 LMH. This membrane outperformed the currently available reverse osmosis membrane and organic solvent nanofiltration membranes in terms of stability and separation factor. This work promotes the development of OSRO separation of organic liquid mixtures without phase change.

The removal of impurities from water or wastewater by the membrane filtration process has become more reliable due to good hydraulic performance and high permeate quality. The filterability of the membrane can be improved by having a material with a specific pore structure and good hydrophilic properties. This work aims at preparing a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane incorporated with phospholipid in the form of a 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, polymeric additive in the form of polyvinylpyrrolidone, and its combination with inorganic nanosilica from a renewable source derived from bagasse. The resulting membrane morphologies were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy was performed to analyze the membrane surface roughness. The chemical compositions of the resulting membranes were identified using Fourier transform infrared. A lab-scale cross-flow filtration system module was used to evaluate the membrane's hydraulic and separation performance by the filtration of humic acid (HA) solution as the model contaminant. Results showed that the additives improved the membrane surface hydrophilicity. All modified membranes also showed up to five times higher water permeability than the pristine PVDF, thanks to the improved structure. Additionally, all membrane samples showed HA rejections of 75-90%.

Sclerostin is a secreted glycoprotein that is mainly expressed in osteocytes, exerts negative effects on bone formation, and is present at elevated levels in diabetes mellitus (DM). Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by periodontopathic bacteria, a complication of DM, and sometimes associated with severe inflammation and alveolar bone resorption. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are a major pathogen in DM complications and adversely influence periodontitis in DM patients. In the present study, the effects of AGE2 and Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (P-LPS) on the expression of sclerostin in mouse osteocyte-like cells (MLO-Y4-A2 cells) and its function in osteoblast differentiation were investigated. AGE2 and P-LPS up-regulated the expressions of receptor of AGE (RAGE) and Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), respectively, and significantly up-regulated that of sclerostin and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in osteocytes. Sclerostin, RAGE and TLR2 levels were synergistically increased by AGE2 and P-LPS. The siRNAs of RAGE and TLR2 significantly inhibited AGE2- and P-LPS-induced sclerostin expression. AGE2 up-regulated sclerostin expression in osteocyte-like cells via the RAGE, ERK and JNK, and NF-κB signal pathways. On the other hand, P-LPS elevated sclerostin levels via the TLR2, JNK and p38, and NF-κB signal pathways. When osteocytes pre-treated with AGE2 and P-LPS and osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1) were co-cultured in the medium with a sclerostin-neutralizing antibody, AGE2- and P-LPS-induced decreases in alkaline phosphatase activity and Runx2 expression in osteoblastic cells were significantly inhibited by the sclerostin-neutralizing antibody. These results suggest that AGE2 and P-LPS influence bone metabolism and inflammation through the regulation of sclerostin expression, and may aggravate periodontitis with DM.

We present a method for computer-generated holography based on deep learning. The inverse process of light propagation is regressed with a number of computationally generated speckle data sets. This method enables noniterative calculation of computer-generated holograms (CGHs). The proposed method was experimentally verified with a phase-only CGH.

We present a method of retrieving a superresolved object field from a single captured intensity image in diffraction-limited diffractive imaging based on machine learning. In this method, the inverse process of diffractive imaging is regressed by using a number of pairs, each consisting of object and captured images. The proposed method is experimentally demonstrated by using a lensless imaging setup with or without scattering media.

We present a machine-learning-based method for light focusing through scattering media. In this method, the optical process in a scattering medium is computationally inverted based on a nonlinear regression algorithm with a number of training input-output pairs through the medium, and an input optimized for a target output is calculated. We experimentally demonstrate focusing via a process involving randomness due to a scattering medium and nonlinearity due to double modulation with a spatial light modulator. Our approach realizes model-free control of optical fields, where optical processes or models are unknown.

We present a machine-learning-based method for single-shot imaging through scattering media. The inverse scattering process was calculated based on a nonlinear regression algorithm by learning a number of training object-speckle pairs. In the experimental demonstration, multilayer phase objects between scattering plates were reconstructed from intensity measurements. RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) transmission modulation through copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)-coated Si under various laser light irradiation conditions was investigated using THz time-domain spectroscopy. The charge carrier transfer from Si to CuPc is crucial for photo-induced metallization, and the thickness of the CuPc layer is a critical parameter for achieving high charge carrier density for metallization. Transmission through a split-ring resonator array metamaterial, fabricated on CuPc-coated Si, can be efficiently modulated by laser light irradiation. Our findings may open the way for various types of metamaterials using organic conjugated materials that are suitable for easy device fabrication using printing technologies.
