RESUMO

Approximately 70 % of the area highly 137Cs-contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is forested. Decontamination works in most of these forests have not progressed, and the forestry industry remains stagnant. Although the long-term dynamics of 137Cs in the forest ecosystem will be controlled by the amount of 137Cs absorbed by roots in the future, temporal changes in 137Cs of tree roots have rarely been reported. In the present study, we monitored the depth distribution of 137Cs in the soil and absorptive very fine (VF) roots of 0.5 mm or less in a Japanese cedar forest from 2011 to 2023. As a result, the 137Cs inventory in the mineral soil increased over time due to the migration from the forest canopy and litter layers, whereas that in the VF roots tended to decrease since 2020, although there was a large variation. Temporal decrease in the exchangeable 137Cs fraction with fixation and temporal increase in VF root biomass with their growth were not clearly observed, the 137Cs concentration in the VF roots at 0-2 cm decreased with the decrease in 137Cs concentration in the litter layers. Although the 137Cs concentration in the VF roots below 2 cm tended to increase with increasing 137Cs concentration in the soil at the same depth, the downward migration of 137Cs within the soil can reduce the amount of 137Cs absorbed by roots because the VF root biomass decreases exponentially with depth. In other words, 137Cs can be removed from the long-term active cycles of forest ecosystems as they migrate deeper into the soil. This natural migration process can be regarded as a "self-cleaning" of the forest ecosystem, the green and sustainable remediation using such self-cleaning should be actively adopted for the future forest management.

Brown seaweeds contain a variety of saccharides which have potential industrial uses. The most abundant polysaccharide in brown seaweed is typically alginate, consisting of mannuronic (M) and guluronic acid (G). The ratio of these residues fundamentally determines the physicochemical properties of alginate. In the present study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to give a detailed breakdown of the monosaccharide species in North Atlantic brown seaweeds. The anthrone method was used for determination of crystalline cellulose. The experimental data was used to calibrate multivariate prediction models for estimation of total carbohydrates, crystalline cellulose, total alginate and alginate M/G ratio directly in dried, brown seaweed using three types of infrared spectroscopy, using relative error (RE) as a measure of predictive accuracy. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) performed well for the estimation of total alginate (RE = 0.12, R2 = 0.82), and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) showed good prediction of M/G ratio (RE = 0.14, R2 = 0.86). Both DRIFTS, ATR and near infrared (NIR) were unable to predict crystalline cellulose and only DRIFTS performed better in determining total carbohydrates. Multivariate spectral analysis is a promising method for easy and rapid characterization of alginate and M/G ratio in seaweed.

Lignin is a group of cell wall localised heterophenolic polymers varying in the chemistry of the aromatic and aliphatic parts of its units. The lignin residues common to all vascular plants have an aromatic ring with one para hydroxy group and one meta methoxy group, also called guaiacyl (G). The terminal function of the aliphatic part of these G units, however, varies from alcohols, which are generally abundant, to aldehydes, which represent a smaller proportion of lignin monomers. The proportions of aldehyde to alcohol G units in lignin are, nevertheless, precisely controlled to respond to environmental and development cues. These G aldehyde to alcohol unit proportions differ between each cell wall layer of each cell type to fine-tune the cell wall biomechanical and physico-chemical properties. To precisely determine changes in lignin composition, we, herein, describe the various methods to detect and quantify the levels and positions of G aldehyde units, also called coniferaldehyde residues, of lignin polymers in ground plant samples as well as in situ in histological cross-sections.

Radionuclides released and deposited because of the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident caused an increase in air dose rates in Fukushima Prefecture forests. Although an increase in air dose rates during rainfall was previously reported, the air dose rates in the Fukushima forests decreased during rainfall. This study aimed to develop a method to estimate rainfall-related changes in air dose rates, even in the absence of soil moisture data, in Namie-Town and Kawauchi-Village, Futaba-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. Moreover, we examined the relationship between preceding rainfall (Rw) and soil moisture content. The air dose rate was estimated by calculating the Rw in Namie-Town from May to July 2020. We found that the air dose rates decreased with increasing soil moisture content. The soil moisture content was estimated from Rw by combining short-term and long-term effective rainfall using half-live values of 2 h and 7 d and considering the hysteresis of water absorption and drainage processes. Furthermore, the soil moisture content and air dose rate estimations showed a good agreement with coefficient of determination (R2) scores >0.70 and >0.65, respectively. The same method was tested to estimate the air dose rates in Kawauchi-Village from May to July 2019. At the Kawauchi site, variation in estimated value is relatively large due to the presence of water repellency in dry conditions, and the amount of 137Cs inventory was low, so estimating air dose from rainfall remained a challenge. In conclusion, rainfall data were successfully used to estimate soil moisture and air dose rates in areas with high 137Cs inventories. This leads to the possibility of removing the influence of rainfall on measured air dose rate data and could contribute to the improvement of methods currently used to estimate the external air dose rates for humans, animals, and terrestrial forest plants.

Ceasium-137 and 90Sr are major artificial radionuclides that have been released into the environment. Soil-to-plant transfer of radionuclides is an important route to food contamination. The radionuclide activity concentrations in crops must be quantitatively predicted for estimating the internal radiation doses from food ingestion. In this study, soil and potato samples were collected from three study sites contaminated with different sources of 137Cs and 90Sr: Aomori Prefecture (global fallout) and two accidental release areas (Fukushima Prefecture and the Chornobyl exclusion zone). The 137Cs activity concentrations in the soil and potato samples widely ranged from 1.0 to 250,000 and from 0.048 to 200,000 Bq kg-1 dry weight, respectively. The soil-to-potato transfer factor of 137Cs also ranged widely (0.0015-1.1) and decreased with increasing concentration of exchangeable K. Meanwhile, the activity concentrations of 90Sr in the soil and potato samples were 0.50-64,000 and 0.027-18,000 Bq kg-1 dry weight respectively, and the soil-to-potato transfer factor of 90Sr was 0.023-0.74, decreasing with increasing concentration of exchangeable Ca. The specific activity ratios of 137Cs/Cs and 90Sr/Sr in the exchangeable fraction were similar to those in potatoes, with a factor of 3 in the ±95 % confidence intervals over six orders of magnitude and a factor of 2 in the ±95 % confidence intervals over five orders of magnitude, respectively. According to the data, the accuracy of predicting the activity concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in potatoes can be improved by applying the specific activity ratios of 137Cs/Cs and 90Sr/Sr in the exchangeable fraction. This approach accounts for variable factors such as the effects of K and Ca fertilization and soil characteristics. It also emphasizes the benefit of determining the stable Cs and Sr concentrations in potatoes and other crops prior to possible future contamination.

The development of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbioses between soil fungi and tree roots requires modification of root cell walls. The pectin-mediated adhesion between adjacent root cells loosens to accommodate fungal hyphae in the Hartig net, facilitating nutrient exchange between partners. We investigated the role of fungal pectin modifying enzymes in Laccaria bicolor for ECM formation with Populus tremula × Populus tremuloides. We combine transcriptomics of cell-wall-related enzymes in both partners during ECM formation, immunolocalisation of pectin (Homogalacturonan, HG) epitopes in different methylesterification states, pectin methylesterase (PME) activity assays and functional analyses of transgenic L. bicolor to uncover pectin modification mechanisms and the requirement of fungal pectin methylesterases (LbPMEs) for ECM formation. Immunolocalisation identified remodelling of pectin towards de-esterified HG during ECM formation, which was accompanied by increased LbPME1 expression and PME activity. Overexpression or RNAi of the ECM-induced LbPME1 in transgenic L. bicolor lines led to reduced ECM formation. Hartig Nets formed with LbPME1 RNAi lines were shallower, whereas those formed with LbPME1 overexpressors were deeper. This suggests that LbPME1 plays a role in ECM formation potentially through HG de-esterification, which initiates loosening of adjacent root cells to facilitate Hartig net formation.

Here, we describe the design and synthesis of a new reduction-cleavable spacer (RCS) based on a nitrobenzene scaffold for constructing reduction-responsive oligonucleotides according to standard phosphoramidite chemistry. In addition, we demonstrate that the introduction of the RCS in the middle of an oligonucleotide (30 nt) enables the construction of a self-assembled microsphere capable of exhibiting a reduction-responsive disassembly.

The vertical distribution of 137Cs in forest soil is important for predicting air dose rates and future cycling in forest ecosystems. However, there are many unexplained questions about the mechanisms of its downward migration. In this study, the 137Cs flux by rainfall infiltration was observed for three years from August 2017 using zero-tension lysimeters in a mature cedar forest where monitoring of the vertical distribution of 137Cs has been conducted since 2011. As a result, the 137Cs concentration in infiltrated water through the litter layer, 5 cm and 10 cm showed a tendency to be high in summer, but no such seasonal variation was found at 20 cm. Although the 137Cs inventory in the litter layer has been exponentially decreasing, the annual 137Cs fluxes in infiltrated water through the litter layer were almost the same in three years, and about 0.14-0.17% of the deposition density of 137Cs. Comparing these 137Cs fluxes with the apparent amounts of downward migration of 137Cs estimated from the change in the vertical distribution of 137Cs, the contribution rate of the infiltrated water to downward migration of 137Cs from litter to soil was calculated to be 8.5-17.7%. Similarly, the contribution rate in mineral soil layers was calculated to be 0.6-0.8% on a measured basis and estimated to be 3.0 ± 0.2% after correcting the amount of collected water, which is a problem with zero-tension lysimeter. It indicates that rainfall infiltration can explain a small part of the downward migration of 137Cs, thus further studies are required to clarify the contribution rate of remaining mechanisms such as advection-diffusion, colloidal transport, physical mixing, bioturbation, and growth and death of plant roots.

To treat malignant glioma, standard fractionated radiotherapy (RT; 60 Gy/30 fractions over 6 weeks) was performed post-surgery in combination with temozolomide to improve overall survival. Malignant glioblastoma recurrence rate is extremely high, and most recurrent tumors originate from the excision cavity in the high-dose irradiation region. In our previous study, protoporphyrin IX physicochemically enhanced reactive oxygen species generation by ionizing radiation and combined treatment with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and ionizing radiation, while radiodynamic therapy (RDT) improved tumor growth suppression in vivo in a melanoma mouse model. We examined the effect of 5-ALA RDT on the standard fractionated RT protocol using U251MG- or U87MG-bearing mice. 5-ALA was orally administered at 60 or 120 mg/kg, 4 h prior to irradiation. In both models, combined treatment with 5-ALA slowed tumor progression and promoted regression compared to treatment with ionizing radiation alone. The standard fractionated RT protocol of 60 Gy in 30 fractions with oral administration of 120 and 240 mg/kg 5-ALA, the human equivalent dose of photodynamic diagnosis, revealed no significant increase in toxicity to normal skin or brain tissue compared to ionizing radiation alone. Thus, RDT is expected to enhance RT treatment of glioblastoma without severe toxicity under clinically feasible conditions.

Chemo-radiotherapy, which combines chemotherapy with radiotherapy, has been clinically practiced since the 1970s, and various anticancer drugs have been shown to have a synergistic effect when used in combination with radiotherapy. In particular, cisplatin (CDDP), which is often the cornerstone of multi-drug combination cancer therapies, is highly versatile and frequently used in combination with radiotherapy for the treatment of many cancers. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying the synergistic effect of CDDP and radiotherapy have been widely investigated, although no definitive conclusions have been reached. We present a review of the combined use of CDDP and radiotherapy, including the latest findings, and propose a mechanism that could explain their synergistic effects. Our hypothesis involves the concepts of overlap and complementation. "Overlap" refers to the overlapping reactions of CDDP and radiation-induced excessive oxidative loading, which lead to accumulating damage to cell components, mostly within the cytoplasm. "Complementation" refers to the complementary functions of CDDP and radiation that lead to DNA damage, primarily in the nucleus. In fact, the two concepts are inseparable, but conceptualizing them separately will help us understand the mechanism underlying the synergism between radiation therapy and other anticancer drugs, and help us to design future radiosensitizers.

Studies on bioaerosols have primarily focused on their chemical and biological compositions and their impact on public health and the ecosystem. However, most bioaerosol studies have only focused on viruses, bacteria, fungi, and pollen. To assess the diversity and composition of airborne insect material in particulate matter (PM) for the first time, we attempted to detect DNA traces of insect origin in dust samples collected over a two-year period. These samples were systematically collected at one-month intervals and categorized into two groups, PM2.5 and PM10, based on the aerodynamic diameter of the aerosol particles. Cytochrome-c oxidase I (COI) was the barcoding region used to identify the origins of the extracted DNA. The airborne insect community in these samples was analyzed using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The most abundant insect sequences belonged to the order Hemiptera (true bugs), whereas order Diptera were also detected in both PM2.5 and PM10 samples. Additionally, we inferred the presence of particulates of insect origin, such as brochosomes and integument particles, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This provided additional confirmation of the molecular results. In this study, we demonstrated the benefits of detection and monitoring of insect information in bioaerosols for understanding the source and composition. Our results suggest that the PM2.5 and PM10 groups are rich in insect diversity. Lastly, the development of databases can improve the identification accuracy of the analytical results.

Polymers that are biocompatible and degradable are desired for tissue engineering approaches in the treatment of vascular diseases, especially for those involving small-diameter blood vessels. Herein, we report the compatibility of a newly developed glycerol-based aliphatic polycarbonate possessing simple methoxy side groups, named poly(5-methoxy-1,3-dioxan-2-one) (PMDO), with blood cells and plasma proteins as well as its susceptibility to hydrolysis. As a consequence of the organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of a methoxy-functionalized cyclic carbonate derived from glycerol, PMDO with a sufficiently high molecular weight (Mn 14 kg/mol) and a narrow distribution (D̵M 1.12) was obtained for evaluation as a bulk biomaterial. This study demonstrates for the first time the organocatalytic ROP of a glycerol-based cyclic carbonate in a controlled manner. Compared with the clinically applied aliphatic polycarbonate poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC), PMDO inhibits platelet adhesion by 33% and denaturation of fibrinogen by 23%. Although the wettability of PMDO based on water contact angle was almost comparable to those of PTMC and poly(ethylene terephthalate), the reason for the inhibited platelet adhesion and protein denaturation appeared to be related to the presence of specific hydrated water formed in the hydrated polymer. The improved hydration of PMDO also enhanced the susceptibility to hydrolysis, with PMDO demonstrating a slightly higher hydrolytic property than PTMC. This simple glycerol-based aliphatic polycarbonate has the following benefits: bio-based characteristics of glycerol and improved blood compatibility and hydrolytic biodegradability stemming from moderate hydration of the methoxy side groups.

Bioaerosols are atmospheric particles with a biological trace, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and plant material such as pollen and plant debris. In this study, we analyzed the biological information in bioaerosols using next generation sequencing of the trace DNA. The samples were collected using an Andersen air sampler and separated into two groups according to particulate matter (PM) size: small (PM2.5) and large (PM10). Amplification and sequencing of the bacterial 16S rDNA gene, prokaryotic internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region and DNA sequence of a plant chloroplast gene (rbcL) were carried out using several sets of specific primers targeting animal and plant sequences. Lots of bacterial information was detected from the bioaerosols. The most abundant bacteria in several samples were of the Actinobacteria (class), Alphaproteobacteria, Bacilli, and Clostridia. For the animal detection using internal transcribed spacer 1, only uncultured fungi were detected in more than half of the hits, with a high number of Cladosporium sp. in the samples. For the plant identification, the ITS1 information only matched fungal species. However, targeting of the rbcL region revealed diverse plant information, such as Medicago papillosa. In conclusion, traces of bacteria, fungi, and plants could be detected in the bioaerosols, but not of animals using our primers.

Understanding the relationship between the distribution of radioactive 134Cs and 137Cs in forests and ambient dose equivalent rates (H˙∗(10)) in the air is important for researching forests in eastern Japan affected by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. This study used a large number of measurements from forest samples, including 134Cs and 137Cs radioactivity concentrations, densities and moisture contents, to perform Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations for H˙∗(10) between 2011 and 2017. Calculated H˙∗(10) at 0.1 and 1 m above the ground had mean residual errors of 19% and 16%, respectively, from measurements taken with handheld NaI(Tl) scintillator survey meters. Setting aside the contributions from natural background radiation, 134Cs and 137Cs in the organic layer and the top 5 cm of forest soil generally made the largest contributions to calculated H˙∗(10). The contributions from 134Cs and 137Cs in the forest canopy were calculated to be largest in the first two years following the accident. Uncertainties were evaluated in the simulation results due to the measurement uncertainties in the model inputs by assuming Gaussian measurement errors. The mean uncertainty (relative standard deviation) of the simulated H˙∗(10) at 1 m height was 11%. The main contributors to the total uncertainty in the simulation results were the accuracies to which the 134Cs and 137Cs radioactivities of the organic layer and top 5 cm of soil, and the vertical distribution of 134Cs and 137Cs within the 5 cm soil layers, were known. Radioactive cesium located in the top 5 cm of soil was the main contributor to H˙∗(10) at 1 m by 2016 or 2017 in the calculation results for all sites. Studies on the 137Cs distribution within forest soil will therefore help explain radiation levels henceforth in forests affected by the FDNPP accident. The merits of this study are that it modelled multiple forests for a long time period, with the important model inputs being informed by field measurements, and it quantified how the measurement uncertainties in these inputs affected the calculation results.

BACKGROUND: Oclacitinib is an effective systemic therapy for dogs with atopic dermatitis (AD). Few studies have evaluated concurrent topical treatment with oclacitinib in dogs. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination therapy of oclacitinib and 0.0584% hydrocortisone aceponate (HCA) spray in dogs with AD. ANIMALS: Eighteen dogs with AD. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. All dogs were treated with oclacitinib (0.4-0.6 mg/kg twice daily for 14 days, then once daily for 14 days) and randomized to receive either HCA spray or placebo spray, applied once daily for seven days then every other day through to Day (D)28. Clinical assessments included the Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, 4th iteration (CADESI-4) and the pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS) every seven days, and blood and urine tests every 14 days. RESULTS: The mean CADESI-4 and PVAS scores were significantly reduced on D7 and D14 compared to D0 in both groups (P < 0.05). From D14 to D21, CADESI-4 and PVAS scores were significantly increased in the placebo group (P < 0.005), and not in the HCA-treated group. The mean reduction from baseline of the HCA-treated group was significantly higher than that of the placebo group for the PVAS and CADESI-4 on D21 (59.9% versus 27.6%, P = 0.0216) and D28 (56.0% versus 30.5%, P = 0.0109), respectively. One dog in the HCA-treated group was withdrawn as a consequence of developing diarrhoea. CONCLUSION: Topical application of 0.0584% HCA spray may be useful for preventing exacerbation of pruritus and clinical lesions when tapering oclacitinib therapy in dogs with AD.

Recently, modern therapies involving immune checkpoint inhibitors, cytokines, and oncolytic virus have been developed. Because of the limited treatment effect of modern therapy alone, the immunostimulatory effect of radiotherapy attracted increasing attention. The combined use of radiotherapy and modern therapy has been examined clinically and non-clinically, and its effectiveness has been confirmed recently. Because melanomas have high immunogenicity, better therapeutic outcomes are desired when using immunotherapy. However, sufficient therapeutic effects have not yet been achieved. Thus far, radiotherapy has been used only for local control of tumors. Although extremely rare, radiotherapy has also been reported for systemic control, i.e., abscopal effect. This is thought to be due to an antitumor immune response. Therefore, we herein summarize past information on not only the mechanism of immune effects on radiotherapy but also biomarkers reported in case reports on abscopal effects. We also reviewed the animal model suitable for evaluating abscopal effects. These results pave the way for further basic research or clinical studies on new treatment methods for melanoma. Currently, palliative radiation is administered to patients with metastatic melanoma for local control. If it is feasible to provide both systemic and local control, the treatment benefit for the patients is very large.

Both the mechanisms of monolignol transport and the transported form of monolignols in developing xylem of trees are unknown. We tested the hypothesis of an active, plasma membrane-localized transport of monolignol monomers, dimers, and/or glucosidic forms with membrane vesicles prepared from developing xylem and lignin-forming tissue-cultured cells of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), as well as from control materials, comprising non-lignifying Norway spruce phloem and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) BY-2 cells. Xylem and BY-2 vesicles transported both coniferin and p-coumaryl alcohol glucoside, but inhibitor assays suggested that this transport was through the tonoplast. Membrane vesicles prepared from lignin-forming spruce cells showed coniferin transport, but the Km value for coniferin was much higher than those of xylem and BY-2 cells. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of membrane proteins isolated from spruce developing xylem, phloem, and lignin-forming cultured cells revealed multiple transporters. These were compared with a transporter gene set obtained by a correlation analysis with a selected set of spruce monolignol biosynthesis genes. Biochemical membrane vesicle assays showed no support for ABC-transporter-mediated monolignol transport but point to a role for secondary active transporters (such as MFS or MATE transporters). In contrast, proteomic and co-expression analyses suggested a role for ABC transporters and MFS transporters.

A 79-year-old man without a history of diabetes underwent orchiectomy for prostate cancer. Eight months after the operation, he suffered severe deterioration of visceral fat deposition, fatty liver and diabetes. Treatment for diabetes with canagliflozin and dulaglutide resulted in improvement in his glycemic control, visceral fat and fatty liver. Visceral fat-dominant deposition, which differs from the typical course after androgen deprivation therapy, may have been associated with severe exacerbation of diabetes and fatty liver. Glycemic management with a sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 receptor agonist may help improve the glucose metabolism, visceral fat deposition and fatty liver after orchiectomy.

Recent reports have suggested that 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), which is a precursor to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), leads to selective accumulation of PpIX in tumor cells and acts as a radiation sensitizer in vitro and in vivo in mouse models of melanoma, glioma, and colon cancer. In this study, we investigated the effect of PpIX under X-ray irradiation through ROS generation and DNA damage. ROS generation by the interaction between PpIX and X-ray was evaluated by two kinds of probes, 3'-(p-aminophenyl) fluorescein (APF) for hydroxyl radical (•OH) detection and dihydroethidium (DHE) for superoxide (O2•-). •OH showed an increase, regardless of the dissolved oxygen. Meanwhile, the increase in O2•- was proportional to the dissolved oxygen. Strand breaks (SBs) of DNA molecule were evaluated by gel electrophoresis, and the enhancement of SBs was observed by PpIX treatment. We also studied the effect of PpIX for DNA damage in cells by X-ray irradiation using a B16 melanoma culture. X-ray irradiation induced γH2AX, DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in the context of chromatin, and affected cell survival. Since PpIX can enhance ROS generation even in a hypoxic state and induce DNA damage, combined radiotherapy treatment with 5-ALA is expected to improve therapeutic efficacy for radioresistant tumors.

Tree architecture has evolved to support a top-heavy above-ground biomass, but this integral feature poses a weight-induced challenge to trunk stability. Maintaining an upright stem is expected to require vertical proprioception through feedback between sensing stem weight and responding with radial growth. Despite its apparent importance, the principle by which plant stems respond to vertical loading forces remains largely unknown. Here, by manipulating the stem weight of downy birch (Betula pubescens) trees, we show that cambial development is modulated systemically along the stem. We carried out a genetic study on the underlying regulation by combining an accelerated birch flowering program with a recessive mutation at the ELIMÄKI locus (EKI), which causes a mechanically defective response to weight stimulus resulting in stem collapse after just 3 months. We observed delayed wood morphogenesis in eki compared with WT, along with a more mechanically elastic cambial zone and radial compression of xylem cell size, indicating that rapid tissue differentiation is critical for cambial growth under mechanical stress. Furthermore, the touch-induced mechanosensory pathway was transcriptionally misregulated in eki, indicating that the ELIMÄKI locus is required to integrate the weight-growth feedback regulation. By studying this birch mutant, we were able to dissect vertical proprioception from the gravitropic response associated with reaction wood formation. Our study provides evidence for both local and systemic responses to mechanical stimuli during secondary plant development.
