BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is associated with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of patients with MRSA-IE in Japan and identify the factors associated with prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with a confirmed diagnosis of IE caused by MRSA, between January 2015 and April 2019. RESULTS: A total of 65 patients from 19 centers were included, with a mean age of 67 years and 26 % were female. Fifty percent of the patients with IE were had nosocomial infections and 25 % had prosthetic valve involvement. The most common comorbidities were hemodialysis (20 %) and diabetes (20 %). Congestive heart failure was present in 86 % of patients (NYHA class I, II: 48 %; III, IV: 38 %). The 30-day and in-hospital mortality rates were 29 % and 46 %, respectively. Multi-organ failure was the primary cause of death, accounting for 43 % of all causes of death. Prognostic factors for in-hospital mortality were age, disseminated intravascular coagulation, daptomycin and/or linezolid as initial antibiotic therapy, and surgery. Surgical treatment was associated with a lower mortality rate (odds ratio [OR], 0.026; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 0.002-0.382; p = 0.008 for 30-day mortality and OR, 0.130; 95 % CI; 0.029-0.584; p = 0.008 for in-hospital mortality). CONCLUSION: Mortality due to MRSA-IE remains high. Surgical treatment is a significant prognostic predictor of MRSA-IE.

The aim of this study was to analyze the population pharmacokinetics of total and unbound concentrations of prophylactic cefazolin (CFZ) in patients with prostatectomy or nephrectomy. We also aimed to calculate a pharmacodynamics target unbound concentration that exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), to design an effective dosing regimen. Briefly, 614 total concentration and 610 unbound concentration samples from 152 individuals were evaluated, using a nonlinear mixed-effects model. The obtained pharmacodynamics index target value reflected the probability of maintaining CFZ unbound trough concentrations exceeding MIC90, 0.5 mg/L, and MIC50, and 1.0 mg/L, to account for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) or Escherichia coli. Population pharmacokinetics were estimated using a two-compartment model with nonlinear protein binding. Unbound systemic clearance (CL) was significantly associated with creatinine clearance, while the maximum protein-binding constant was significantly associated with albumin levels. The probability of achieving an unbound concentration exceeding the MIC50 for E. coli or MIC90 for MSSA in a patient with normal renal function following a 1 g CFZ infusion over 15 min was above 90% at 3 h after the initial dose. Our findings indicated that population pharmacokinetic parameters are useful for determining unbound CFZ pharmacokinetics and evaluating intraoperative CFZ redosing intervals.

BACKGROUND: MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)-infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess data from patients with MRSA-IE across multiple facilities in Japan, with a specific focus on antimicrobial therapy and prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with a confirmed diagnosis of IE attributed to MRSA, spanning the period from January 2015 to April 2019. RESULTS: Sixty-four patients from 19 centers were included, with a median age of 67 years. The overall mortality rate was 28.1% at 30 days, with an in-hospital mortality of 45.3%. The most frequently chosen initial anti-MRSA agents were glycopeptide in 67.2% of cases. Daptomycin and linezolid were selected as initial therapy in 23.4% and 17.2% of cases, respectively. Approximately 40% of all patients underwent medication changes due to difficulty in controlling infection or drug-related side effects. Significant prognostic factors by multivariable analysis were DIC for 30-day mortality and surgical treatment for 30-day and in-hospital mortality. For vancomycin as initial monotherapy, there was a trend toward a worse prognosis for 30-day and in-hospital mortality (OR, 6.29; 95%CI, 1.00-39.65; p = 0.050, OR, 3.61; 95%CI, 0.93-14.00; p = 0.064). Regarding the choice of initial antibiotic therapy, statistical analysis did not show significant differences in prognosis. CONCLUSION: Glycopeptide and daptomycin were the preferred antibiotics for the initial therapy of MRSA-IE. Antimicrobial regimens were changed for various reasons. Prognosis was not significantly affected by choice of antibiotic therapy (glycopeptide, daptomycin, linezolid), but further studies are needed to determine which antimicrobials are optimal as first-line agents.

Catechinopyranocyanidins A and B (cpcA, B) are purple pigments isolated from the seed coat of the small red bean called adzuki in Japanese (Vigna angularis). CpcA and B are known to be responsible for the purple color of an-paste. The quality evaluation of the paste is based on its purple color; therefore, it is important to analyze the contents of cpcA and B in various azuki beans, which differ in the cultivar, production area, and cultivation conditions. The extraction of cpcA and B from dried beans was conducted, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The content of cpcA and B in various cultivars from Japan, Korea, China, and Nepal was quantified. The cpcA and B content was the highest in the regular adzuki cultivar from Hokkaido Prefecture (Japan), and that of the beans from Korea and China was low. The content of the pale-colored beans from Nepal was the lowest.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the cause of and effective measures against cluster infections, including the delta AY.1 variant of novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that occurred in an accommodation facility. METHODS: We surveyed the zoning and ventilation systems of the cluster accommodation, examined the staff's working conditions, conducted an interview, and administered a SARS-CoV-2 test (positive samples were further tested with molecular biological test). RESULTS: Among the 99 employees working at the accommodation, 10 were infected with the delta AY.1 variant. The causes of the cluster infections were close-distance conversations without an unwoven-three-layer mask and contact for approximately five minutes with an unwoven mask under hypoventilated conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The Delta AY.1 infection may occur via aerosols and an unwoven mask might not prevent infection in poorly ventilated small spaces. Routine infection detection and responding quickly and appropriately to positive results helps to prevent clusters from spreading.

BACKGROUND: Antibody testing is essential for accurately estimating the number of people infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This study aimed to investigate the influence of background factors on seroprevalence by testing for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in blood samples obtained from the staff of three hospitals. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted from June 8 to July 4, 2020, as part of a mandatory health examination. Leftover blood samples collected during the health examinations at each hospital were used to test for the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. The Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 RUO assay was used for antibody detection. The relationship between staff age, gender, body mass index, blood pressure, work environments with different exposure risks, place of residence, and campus location and seroprevalence was investigated. The data were anonymized prior to analysis. RESULTS: A total of 3,677 individuals were included in the study, comprising 2,554 females (69.5%) and 1,123 males (30.5%). Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody (immunoglobulin G) was detected in 13 participants (0.35%). Seroprevalence was slightly higher in males than females (0.62% vs. 0.23%, P=0.08). By occupation, anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were found in 6 (0.75%) physicians, 6 (0.31%) nurses, and one individual (0.11%) in the medical personnel group, with slightly higher levels in physicians. No significant difference was noted in the seroprevalence in terms of all background factors. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that the background factors do not impact seropositivity rates. Thorough daily infection control and adherence to recommended health guidelines were found to reduce infection risk.

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to evaluate the population pharmacokinetics of prophylactic cefmetazole sodium (CMZ) based on the serum concentrations and establish a pharmacodynamics target concentration exceeding the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to design the re-dosing interval. METHODS: Serum (n = 362) samples from 107 individuals were analyzed using a nonlinear mixed-effects model. The pharmacodynamics index obtained was regarded as the probability of maintaining CMZ serum trough exceeding the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 mg/L. This MIC was chosen to account for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), E. coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae RESULTS: The final population pharmacokinetic model was a two-compartment model with linear elimination. Creatinine clearance and body weight were identified as significant covariates influencing the central clearance and volume of distribution in the central compartment. The probability of achieving serum concentrations exceeding the MIC90 for MSSA, E. coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae for a 1 g dose with a 10 min intravenous infusion was above 90% except for good renal function (CLcr â‰§ 95 mL/min) at 2 h after the initial dose. For patients with good renal function (CLcr â‰§ 95 mL/min), a CMZ of 2 g re-dosing interval seemed necessary to meet the achievement probability. In patients with impaired renal function (CLcr ≤20 mL/min), the probability of achievement exceeded 90% even when the dosing interval was extended to 8 h. CONCLUSIONS: We evaluated re-dosing intervals based on the population pharmacokinetics. Re-dosing intervals should be determined based on renal function.

INTRODUCTION: Microorganisms can evolve and become resistant to antimicrobials, and this is known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to AMR, and antimicrobial stewardship programs have been developed to mitigate AMR. The Appropriate Use of Carbapenems Program was implemented in March 2019 in a university hospital and its effect was evaluated. METHODS: We conducted a prospective audit and feedback on carbapenems at the time of prescription daily. Additionally, we compared a monthly survey of the total days of therapy (DOTs) per 1000 patient-days for carbapenems, piperacillin/tazobactam, and fluoroquinolones. The susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to meropenem, piperacillin/tazobactam, and levofloxacin was tested before (January 2018 to February 2019) and after (March 2019 to December 2020) the intervention. RESULTS: The monthly median DOTs of carbapenem usage decreased after the intervention; carbapenem use immediately declined during the intervention period. The monthly median DOTs of piperacillin/tazobactam and fluoroquinolones also decreased and continued to decline significantly after the intervention. Susceptibility of P. aeruginosa to meropenem, piperacillin/tazobactam, and levofloxacin did not change significantly during the study. CONCLUSION: The implementation of the Appropriate Use of Carbapenems Program was effective in reducing the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and maintaining the antibiotic susceptibility of P. aeruginosa.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the population pharmacokinetics of prophylactic flomoxef based on serum and liver tissue concentrations and to demonstrate a pharmacodynamic target concentration in the serum and liver tissue exceeding the MIC in order to design an effective dosing regimen. Serum samples (n = 210) and liver tissue samples (n = 29) from 43 individuals were analyzed using a nonlinear mixed-effects model. The pharmacodynamics index target value was regarded as the probability of maintaining flomoxef serum trough and liver tissue concentrations exceeding the MIC90 values, 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, for Escherichia coli and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The final population pharmacokinetic model was a two-compartment model with linear elimination. Creatinine clearance (CLCR) was identified as a significant covariate influencing total clearance when CLCR was less than 60 mL/min. The probability of achieving concentrations in the serum and liver tissue exceeding the MIC90 for E. coli or methicillin-susceptible S. aureus for a 1 g bolus dose was above 90% at 2 h after the initial dose. Our findings suggest that population pharmacokinetic parameters are helpful for evaluating flomoxef pharmacokinetics and determining intraoperative flomoxef redosing intervals.

We assessed whether prospective therapeutic drug monitoring to optimise the therapeutic range could prevent linezolid-induced thrombocytopenia. This prospective interventional study was conducted from September 2017 to October 2020 among 37 adult patients receiving linezolid. Patients were administered one of the following two initial dosages: 600 mg twice or once daily for patients with a creatinine clearance rate of ≥50 or <50 mL/min, respectively. Linezolid dosage adjustment was performed on days 3-5 based on the trough concentration. The serum linezolid levels in 22 and 15 patients were within and above the therapeutic range (2-7 µg/mL), respectively. The incidence of thrombocytopenia was significantly lower among patients whose linezolid levels were within the therapeutic range (4.5%;1/22) than in those whose levels were above the therapeutic range (80%; 12/15). It is important to maintain the linezolid level within the therapeutic range at the first therapeutic drug monitoring to prevent thrombocytopenia.

BACKGROUND: During surgery, the effectiveness of perioperative prophylactic antibiotic administration against surgical site infections is inferred from serum concentrations and not from tissues where local infections occur. This study aimed to measure the serum and tissue concentrations of cefmetazole in colorectal surgery cases to clarify whether there is an association between the incidence of surgical site infections and antibiotic concentrations. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was performed at a single tertiary care center. The data of 105 patients who underwent colorectal surgery between October 2017 and September 2019 were evaluated. The primary outcome was the incidence of surgical site infections. Univariate analysis was performed to investigate the association between surgical site infections, perioperative factors, and the serum and tissue concentrations of cefmetazole. RESULTS: The incidence of surgical site infections was 13/105 (12.4%). Cefmetazole concentrations were measured at initial incision (serum; 101 vs 93.1 mg/L, P = .75, subcutaneous fat tissue; 2.8 vs 3.7 mg/g, P = .15), intestinal resection (serum; 35.1 vs 36.7 mg/L, P = .63, mesenteric adipose tissue; 1.3 vs 1.7 mg/g, P = .55), and at skin closure (serum; 34.5 vs 44.8 mg/L, P = .18, subcutaneous fat tissue; 1.0 vs 2.2 mg/g, P = .09). In univariate analysis with P ≤ .10, cefmetazole concentration in subcutaneous fat tissue at skin closure was found to be a significant risk factor for surgical site infections. Age, additional intraoperative administration of cefmetazole, and creatinine clearance were also significant risk factors for the occurrence of surgical site infections. CONCLUSION: Low subcutaneous fat cefmetazole concentrations at skin closure during gastrointestinal operations may also be involved in the occurrence of surgical site infections.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the population pharmacokinetics of prophylactic cefazolin (CFZ) from its serum and hip joint capsule concentrations in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and to establish the pharmacodynamic target concentration exceeding the MIC for designing an effective dosing regimen for serum and the hip joint capsule. We analyzed 249 serum samples and 125 hip joint capsule samples from 125 individuals using a nonlinear mixed-effects model. The pharmacodynamic index target value obtained from our results indicates the probability of maintaining CFZ trough and hip joint capsule concentrations exceeding the MIC of 1 mg/liter to account for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). We estimated the population pharmacokinetics using a two-compartment model. The estimated population pharmacokinetic parameters were as follows: clearance (CL) (liters/h) = 1.46 × (creatinine clearance [CLcr] [ml/min]/77)0.891, volume of distribution of the central compartment (Vc) (liters) = 7.5, central-hip joint capsule compartment clearance (Q) (liters/h) = 3.38, and volume of distribution in the hip joint capsule compartment (VJC) (liters) = 36.1. The probability of achieving concentrations exceeding the MIC90 for MSSA was approximately 100% for serum and 100% for the hip joint capsule at 3 h after the initial dose. Our findings suggest that population-based parameters are useful for evaluating CFZ pharmacokinetics and that individual dosages should be determined based on the dosage regimen that achieves and maintains adequate tissue CFZ concentration.

On April 2, 2020, we received a maternal transport from a local city hospital of a pregnant woman (38 weeks and 0 days of gestation) in her 20s, who had the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We performed an emergency cesarean section with spinal anesthesia because of an abnormal fetal heart rate pattern. A healthy 3106-g male baby was delivered. All the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction tests of nasal and oral discharges, anal swabs and blood samples of the neonate at 9 h, 30 h and 4 days after birth were negative. Because the mother was diagnosed as having COVID-19 pneumonia, the neonate was given formula milk. The mother's nasal discharge samples at 20 and 21 days were negative. The mother first held her baby in her arms on the 22nd day after birth, and they were discharged on the following day. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in Japan of a delivery of a baby from a woman infected with COVID-19.

Objective To describe the clinical features and clinical course of individuals diagnosed with asymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection or mild coronavirus disease (COVID)-19. Patients The study participants consisted of 7 crewmembers of the passenger cruise-liner, Diamond Princess, who were admitted to our hospital after becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 aboard the ship. Methods The data on patient background and biochemical test results were obtained from the patients' medical records. All patients had a chest X-ray, and a throat swab and sputum samples were sent for culture on admission. Results The median age of the 7 patients, of whom 4 were male and 3 were female, was 39 years (range: 23-47 years). On admission, none of them had fever, but 4 (57%) had a cough. None of them showed any signs of organ damage on laboratory testing. Chest X-ray showed pneumonia in one individual, which resolved spontaneously, while the other 6 had normal chest X-ray findings. Culture of throat swabs and sputum samples revealed that 4 patients (57%) had bacterial upper respiratory infections (Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus). The period from a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to negative conversion ranged from 5 to 13 days, with a median of 8 days. Conclusion Healthy young adults without risk factors who acquire SARS-CoV-2 infection may have an asymptomatic infection or may experience mild COVID-19. In addition to obesity, an older age, underlying illness, and being overweight can lead to a risk of exacerbation; thus, hospital management for such individuals may be desirable. Culturing respiratory samples may be useful for diagnosing secondary bacterial pneumonia.

A 40-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus taking consecutive oral corticosteroids developed a high-grade fever and disorder of consciousness following acute rhinitis. Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) was found and isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid by culture, leading to a diagnosis of meningitis. The prevalence of H. influenzae type b (Hib) infections has decreased due to routine immunization. As a result, the prevalence of invasive non-Hib, including Hif infection, is increasing as a common H. influenzae infection in children and adults. Physicians should be aware of non-Hib H. influenzae infection, even though the Hib vaccine is widely used in Japan.

RESUMO

Following the first case of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2), in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, it has spread worldwide. An outbreak in Japan occurred on a cruise ship, and this was followed by community-acquired COVID-19. Herein, we report three cases of COVID-19 that presented pneumonia following admission to Kitasato University Hospital. Patients were admitted based on the positive result of real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests for COVID-19 nucleic acid. All patients were diagnosed as suffering from non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia and were successfully treated with Lopinavir/Ritonavir (LPV/r). LPV/r could be an option for treating non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia in general and even in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) has become a global problem. Most carbapenemases detected in Japan are imipenemase, which is an imipenem-degrading enzyme with low ability; thus, CPE could have been overlooked. Therefore, this study aimed to detect and analyze CPE, without overlooking CPE showing the low minimum inhibitory concentration phenotype. METHODS: CPE screening was conducted on 531 ceftazidime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolated from Kitasato University Hospital during 2006-2015. We confirmed the presence of the carbapenemase genes (blaIMP, blaVIM, blaKPC, blaNDM, and blaOXA-48) by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. The detected CPE strains were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, multilocus sequence typing, conjugal experiments, replicon typing, and plasmid profiling by restriction enzyme treatment. RESULTS: The CPE detection rate in Kitasato University Hospital within the past 10 years was 0.0003% (nine CPE strains). These nine CPE strains were identified to harbor 8 blaIMP-1 or 1 blaNDM-5. The CPE strains consisted of five species including Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii. Six of eight blaIMP-1 were coded by IncHI2 plasmid, and the other two were coded by IncA/C plasmid. Plasmid profiling revealed that K. pneumoniae and C. freundii isolated from the same patient harbored the same plasmid. CONCLUSION: The CPE detection rate in this study was significantly lower than those previously reported in Japan. In one case, IncA/C plasmid transmission through different bacterial species within the body was speculated. Although the number of CPE detected was low, these results indicated that the resistance plasmid could spread to other bacterial species.

PURPOSE: New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase 5 (NDM-5) shows stronger resistance to carbapenems and broad-spectrum cephalosporins than NDM-1 because NDM-5 differs from NDM-1 by two amino acid substitutions. In this study, our aim was to characterize a NDM-5-producing Escherichia coli isolate KY1497 from a patient with urinary tract infection in Japan, who had no recent history of overseas travel. PATIENTS AND METHODS: NDM-5-producing E. coli isolate KY1497 was detected in the urine sample of a patient hospitalized in a tertiary hospital in Japan. The complete genome sequence of isolate KY1497 was determined by short- and long-read sequencing with hybrid assembly, followed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), core-genome phylogeny analysis, plasmid analysis, and transconjugation experiments. RESULTS: KY1497 was classified as ST405 by MLST, and core-genome phylogeny exhibited the closest lineage to the clinical isolates in Nepal (IOMTU605) and Canada (FDAARGOS_448). KY1497 harbors bla NDM-5 in the IncFII-IncFIB(pB171) replicon plasmid (pKY1497_1, 123,767 base pairs). Plasmid analysis suggested that the cognate plasmids of pKY1497_1 have a minor plasmid background, rather than the globally disseminated IncX3 plasmid carrying bla NDM-5. Transconjugation analysis revealed that pKY1497_1 is transmissible to the recipient E. coli J53 strain. CONCLUSION: We characterized a novel Inc replicon plasmid (IncFII-IncFIB[pB171]) carrying bla NDM-5 and its host E. coli strain. NDMs are associated with a high risk of infection worldwide because of their antibiotic resistance and untreatable and hard-to-treat infections. Other patients in the hospital showed negative results for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. As NDM-producing strains are only sporadically detected in Japan, attention should be provided to the community prevalence of NDM-producing E. coli strains to prevent nosocomial infections.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify risk factors for wound infection after laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 1144 patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the following 14 postoperative risk factors for wound infection. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that the following 4 risk factors were related to wound infection: tumor location right-sided colon cancer, a preoperative serum albumin level of ≤2.5 g/dL, anastomotic technique [functional end-to-end anastomosis (FEEA)], and sutures used at the time of wound closure non-polydioxanone sutures (PDS)-Plus. Multivariate analysis indicated that 3 factors were independent risk factors for wound infection: a preoperative serum albumin level of ≤2.5 g/dL, FEEA, and the use of non-PDS-Plus sutures wound closure. CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors for wound infection after laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer were a preoperative serum albumin level of ≤2.5 g/dL, FEEA, and the use of non-PDS-Plus sutures.

BACKGROUND: Infection with Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus: GBS) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates. Screening for GBS is mainly done by culture-based methods, but a reliable result may take several days to obtain and culture is difficult to perform at institutions without a laboratory. We evaluated an immunochromatography method for rapid detection of GBS-specific surface immunogenic protein (Sip) using anti-Sip monoclonal antibodies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 377 cervical and vaginal swabs collected during weeks 35-37 of gestation were inoculated into GBS medium F and incubated. Growth of microorganisms and production of red/orange pigment were assessed by observation. Then culture extracts were subjected to immunochromatography and were also inoculated onto chromID Strepto B (STRB) medium, after which isolates were serotyped and characterized by PCR. RESULTS: Of the 377 samples, 54 (14.3%) were positive for GBS by immunochromatography after incubation in GBS medium F. On the other hand, GBS was isolated from 58 (15.4%) of the 377 samples by culture with GBS medium F and STRB medium. Ten of the 58 isolates were non-pigmented and 4 of these were not detected by immunochromatography. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of immunochromatography were 93.1% (54/58), 100% (319/319), 100% (54/54), and 98.8% (319/323), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Immunochromatography was comparable to culture on STRB medium for detecting GBS, indicating that this method could be used clinically for GBS screening in pregnant women even at small institutions.
