RESUMO

Herein, we investigated the anti-amoebic activity of phosphonium-chloride-based deep eutectic solvents against pathogenic Acanthamoeba castellanii of the T4 genotype. Deep eutectic solvents are ionic fluids composed of two or three substances, capable of self-association to form a eutectic mixture with a melting point lower than each substance. In this study, three distinct hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents were formulated, employing trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride as the hydrogen bond acceptor and aspirin, dodecanoic acid, and 4-tert-butylbenzoic acid as the hydrogen bond donors. Subsequently, all three deep eutectic solvents, denoted as DES1, DES2, DES3 formulations, underwent investigations comprising amoebicidal, adhesion, excystation, cytotoxicity, and cytopathogenicity assays. The findings revealed that DES2 was the most potent anti-amoebic agent, with a 94% elimination rate against the amoebae within 24 h at 30 °C. Adhesion assays revealed that deep eutectic solvents hindered amoebae adhesion to human brain endothelial cells, with DES2 exhibiting 88% reduction of adhesion. Notably, DES3 exhibited remarkable anti-excystation properties, preventing 94% of cysts from reverting to trophozoites. In cytopathogenicity experiments, deep eutectic solvent formulations and dodecanoic acid alone reduced amoebae-induced human brain endothelial cell death, with DES2 showing the highest effects. Lactate dehydrogenase assays revealed the minimal cytotoxicity of the tested deep eutectic solvents, with the exception of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride, which exhibited 35% endothelial cell damage. These findings underscore the potential of specific deep eutectic solvents in combating pathogenic Acanthamoeba, presenting promising avenues for further research and development against free-living amoebae.

RESUMO

The meat of the quail is one of the most delicious types, as it is rich in minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin K, which is useful in treating nervous diseases. In the present investigation, based on their live body weight, 270 genetically-enhanced white quail chicks of mixed sex were randomly assigned to 3 groups, each with 90 chicks. The first group's birds were slaughtered at 28 d of age. The birds in the second group were slaughtered at 31 d, and the birds in the third group were slaughtered at 34 d. Results showed no significant difference between the various groups in the overall mortality rate index at the end of each fattening stage (P > 0.05). There were substantial variations (P ≤ 0.05) in the average live weight index between the first and both groups at each group's marketing age. With increasing marketing age, body weight increases. Quail chicks raised for 34 d received the lowest EPEF (28.90 points), followed by those raised for 31 d and 28 d, which received 33.37 and 37.32 points, respectively. The economic feasibility of the 3 groups, no significant differences in the profit index were observed at the age of 28 d. Compared to the marketing age of the other 2 groups, it was noted that the profit index decreased as the birds advanced in age. Delaying marketing to 31 d leads to a decrease in profit by 5.7%, and delaying marketing to 34 d reduces the profit index to 26.36% compared to marketing at 28 d. For blood hematology parameters, a significant increase in the studied indicators with the age of the birds was observed through the study of blood indicators. Still, it did not reach the significance level. It could be concluded that 28 d is the ideal marketing age for the enhanced white quails, as it yielded the highest economic return and the best performance.

RESUMO

While several group contribution method (GCM) models have been developed in recent years for the prediction of ionic liquid (IL) properties, some challenges exist in their effective application. Firstly, the models have been developed and tested based on different datasets; therefore, direct comparison based on reported statistical measures is not reliable. Secondly, many of the existing models are limited in the range of ILs for which they can be used due to the lack of functional group parameters. In this paper, we examine two of the most diverse GCMs for the estimation of IL melting point; a key property in the selection and design of ILs for materials and energy applications. A comprehensive database consisting of over 1300 data points for 933 unique ILs, has been compiled and used to critically evaluate the two GCMs. One of the GCMs has been refined by introducing new functional groups and reparametrized to give improved performance for melting point estimation over a wider range of ILs. This work will aid in the targeted design of ILs for materials and energy applications.

RESUMO

Thumb extensor injuries and bony avulsion in the distal phalanx of the thumb are rare compared with other fingers. The most reported complications are infection, nail deformity, joint incongruity, implant failure, recurrent flexion deformity, and residual pain. This report presents a case of 30-year-old man suffering from an injury in the left thumb distal phalanx with a displaced comminuted intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx of the left thumb. The nail plate was interposed between the dorsal and palmar fragments. The interposition of the nail plate in the bony mallet thumb has not been described before. Surgical treatment and fixation with a 2-mm miniscrew resulted in successful treatment. Clinical suspicion of this complication is of great importance and can affect treatment outcomes.

RESUMO

Cut flowers and floral waste (CFW) is a major concern in the present era. This study emphasizes the reuse of cut flowers as a neat bioadsorbent and activated carbon (AC). The biomass from the cut flowers was utilized as a neat bioadsorbent for the removal of the antibiotic levofloxacin and lead ions from water. The results revealed that the neat bioadsorbent was able to remove 60% levofloxacin and 45% of lead ions. Upon chemical activation of the CFW (using KOH), almost all levofloxacin and more than 99% of lead ions were removed. Physical activation (using CO2) gave a material that removed 90% of levofloxacin and 85% of lead ions. The adsorption of levofloxacin and lead ions on all the adsorbents followed Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results have been further explained via the prediction of interaction energies between the adsorbates and adsorbents using COSMO-RS simulation.

RESUMO

Total knee arthroplasty is a challenging task in patients with severe varus deformity. In most of these patients, an extensive medial release is needed that may lead to instability. Medial epicondylar osteotomy may be a better substitute for complete medial collateral release. Fourteen patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis and severe varus deformity were enrolled in this study. In one side, the patients underwent medial epicondylar osteotomy for mediolateral imbalance if the only option was superficial medial collateral ligament (MCL) release. In contralateral side, the extensive medial release was performed and MCL was released either by pie-crusting technique or by subperiosteally release. The results of the two sides were compared. Patients were followed up for 12 months after the operation. Physical examination, clinical questionnaires, and radiography findings were recorded. Union of the osteotomies fragment and complications was evaluated. The mean varus angle before surgery was 21.6 ± 4.7 degrees, which was corrected to 8.6 ± 2.9 degrees after operation with an extensive medial release. The mean varus angle of contralateral side was 22.6 ± 1.7 degrees, which was corrected to 7.5 ± 2.3 degrees following medial femoral epicondyle osteotomy. There was no significant difference in varus correction (p = 0.1). Medial joint line opening in valgus stress test was 2.7 ± 0.4 mm in the osteotomized side and 3.5 ± 0.9 mm in contralateral side. Mean range of motion for the osteotomized side was 97.8 ± 4.3 degrees and 100.7 ± 2.7 degrees for contralateral side (p = 0.6). Nonunion occurred in a case in the osteotomized side and no medial instability was observed in medial release or osteotomies sides. No statistical difference was recorded based on clinical questionnaires (Oxford and WOMAC [Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index] scores). Medial epicondylar osteotomy is a safe technique with the well-controlled medial extensive release in the patients with severe varus deformity during total knee arthroplasty.

RESUMO

Schwannomas and neurofibromas are rare benign tumors originating from the peripheral nerve sheath. Tumors in neurofibromatosis are mostly neurofibromas and often appear in the soft tissue of peripheral nerves. In this report, a patient presented with two large adjacent soft tissue tumors in the right wrist and distal forearm which originated from a common nerve. A schwannoma had formed beside a neurofibroma from the ulnar nerve and induced numbness and paresthesia in the little and ring fingers. Although the patient had café au lait spots on the skin, neurofibromatosis was not suspected due to lack of symptoms. The patient was referred to the current research clinic suffering from two soft tissue masses in the wrist and ulnar nerve dysfunction. In neurofibromatosis patients, two tumors of a different nature originating from a common nerve close together have rarely been described in the literature. The patient was treated by en bloc excision of the mass while protecting the nerve fascicles. The follow-up results indicated no neurological symptoms and complete restoration of ulnar nerve function.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) is one of the joints exposed to upper limb injury. The dorsal fracture-dislocations of the PIP is a common injury. Treatment of cases with small avulsed bone fragments is challenging. Stable fixation with rapid recovery is important in these patients. HYPOTHESIS: Volar buttress plating a new technique in treatment of the dorsal proximal interphalangeal joint fracture dislocations but the results of it is unknown. METHODS: In this case series, 21 patients with dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal were studied. We used a volar hook plate buttressing technique so that fixation was done by low-profile 2-mm stainless steel hook plate with a 1.5-mm screw. Range of motion movements, power and grip strength were measured after 3 months. At end of follow-up period, functional outcome was determined by the visual analogue scale, Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand. RESULTS: After three-month follow-up a union of fractures occurred in all of the patients. There were no complications, such as infection, digital nerve injuries or flexor tendon rupture. The joints range of motion were stable and had no restrictions. Postoperative range of motion outcome in 19 (90.5%) patients was 85.7±13.2 degree which was not significantly different from opposite side on other hand (p=0.1). In two patients range of motion was 65.5±5.4 degree and painful. Postoperative pain in 19 patients was 2.5±0.8 so that there was no pain in 17(76.2%) patients, three (14.1%) patients had mild pain and two (9.5%) patients had moderate pain (5.4±1.2). Two patients complained of plate irritation of especially at end of proximal intrphalangeal flexion. CONCLUSION: Clinical application of hook plate buttressing technique induced stable fixation and rapid recovery. Because of maintaining articular congruity and restoring anatomically, this technique associated with good outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV, Therapeutic study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among common fractures in the elderly. Regarding the age, background diseases, and possible risks, analgesia method is of great importance in this group. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare two analgesia methods including hematoma block and general anesthesia in people over 60 years in the orthopedic emergency department. METHODS: 68 elderly patients referring to the emergency department of a medical teaching center were selected based on the inclusion criteria for a non-randomized clinical trial. The patients were placed in two groups of 34, which were matched for age and sex. Hematoma block was used as the analgesic method in one group and general anesthesia was used in the other group. These two groups were compared for pain intensity, analgesia duration, and anesthesia side effects. The SPSS software (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 17.0, SPSS Inc., Chicago, Ill, USA) was used for data analysis. RESULTS: 68 elderly patients (mean age of 70.3 ± 6.6) with a dislocated distal radius fracture which required closed reduction were examined. The duration of manipulation and surgery and discharging time were significantly different between two groups and they were all lower in the hematoma blocked group. Pain intensity evaluation indicated a statistically significant difference during initial hours after fracture reduction and fixation so that pain intensity was less in elderly patients under hematoma block than patients who underwent general anesthesia in one and six hours after surgery. Need for narcotic was 35.2% in the general anesthesia group which also showed a significant between-group difference. CONCLUSIONS: Hematoma block analgesia used in distal radius fractures of the elderly is a very safe and effective method that seems preferable to general anesthesia in emergency departments.

RESUMO

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compression neuropathy and carpal tunnel surgery is the most frequently performed hand surgery. Anatomic anomalies may predispose the median nerve to compression. The aim of the current study was to search for anatomic anomalies in open carpal tunnel surgeries through a cross-sectional study. During a cross-sectional study in a one-year period, 436 consecutive patients (307 females and 129 males) with the average age of 50.3 ± 2.4 years underwent 467 classic open carpal tunnel surgeries. Thirty-one patients had bilateral surgeries. A thorough inspection of the incisions was conducted to search for vascular, neural, tendon and muscular anomalies. Forty-two (8.9%) hands (14 males and 28 females) had anomalies. The average age of the patients with discovered anomalies was 48.6 ± 7.6 years. Ten anomalies were seen on the left hands and 32 anomalies were seen on the right hands. Among the 42 anomalies, there were 16 persistent median arteries, 14 anomalies of the median nerve, 7 intratunnel intrusion of the flexor and lumbrical muscle bellies and 5 anomalies of the origin of the thenar muscles. There was no correlation between the discovered anomalies and the age, gender or hand sides. Anatomical anomalies are not uncommon in carpal tunnel surgeries. However, the frequencies of the reported anomalies vary among different studies. Familiarity with these anomalies increases the safety of the operation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid malunion alters the carpal kinematics and impairs clinical outcome because of pain, weakness, restricted range of motion and predisposing the wrist joint to early osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the scaphoid morphological angles on clinical outcomes in patients with reconstructed scaphoid by non-vascularized bone graft. METHODS: Seventeen male patients with the mean age of 31.7±3.7 years and mean non-union time of 31.5±14.7 months were enrolled in this retrospective study. Average follow up was 48.8±9.4 months. At the last follow-up, the patients were evaluated clinically for pain, wrist range of motion, grip strength, and wrist functional status. They were also evaluated radiologically by wrist radiographs and computerized tomography (CT). The overall clinical outcomes were evaluated by the Cooney wrist function score. The morphology of the reconstructed scaphoids was evaluated by the lateral intrascaphoid angle, antroposterior intrascaphoid angle, dorsal cortical angle, measuring the length (mm), and height-to-length ratio on CT scan. The radiological measurements were compared against the overall clinical outcomes. RESULTS: There were 7 excellent, 7 good, 3 fair clinical results. The mean Cooney wrist function score was 83±4. The mean lateral intrascaphoid angle was 34.8±1.4 degrees, mean antroposterior intrascaphoid angle was 33.4±2.2 degrees, mean dorsal cortical angle was 158.3±4.8 degrees, mean scaphoid length was 22.1± 0.7 mm, and mean scaphoid height-to-length ratio was 0.74±0.04. There were no significant statistical correlations between the lateral intrascaphoid angles, antroposterior intrascaphoid angles, dorsal cortical angles, scaphoid lengths and scaphoid height-to-length ratios and Cooney wrist scores in the patients. CONCLUSION: In the current study, all the patients had some degree of scaphoid malunion; however, the radiological measurements of the reconstructed scaphoids did not correlate with the clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

Membrane microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) systems of activated sludge is crucial part of a bioreactor process used in municipal wastewater treatment. In this study, both cylindrical and flat sheet ceramic membranes were used to treat municipal wastewaters. The effects of removing water turbidity and coliform bacteria from an artificial wastewater were studied by performing batch experiments by MF and ultraviolet (UV) photolysis of 254 nm wavelength. It was shown that the microfiltration had a high effect of suspended solid removal. However, the effect of bacteria removal was limited so that the rate of cfu removal was approximately 61%. Combined consecutive processes in the treatment (MF/UV and UV/MF) confirmed that a specific porosity of the ceramic filter for bacteria removal was required. The continuous membrane bioreactor (MBR) tests performed by using a MF membrane with the pore size of 0.2 microm showed that particulate matter and microorganisms found in municipal wastewater could be effectively removed. Turbidity was decreased from 4.50 to 0.05 NTU, with a removal efficiency of greater than 98%. The permeate total suspended solid (TSS) content for the whole run was below 5 mgL-1. The density of total coliforms was decreased more than four orders of magnitude (from around 1x10(5) mL-1 to less than 5 mL-1 in the effluent).
