RESUMO

Silicon-based quantum emitters are candidates for large-scale qubit integration due to their single-photon emission properties and potential for spin-photon interfaces with long spin coherence times. Here, we demonstrate local writing and erasing of selected light-emitting defects using femtosecond laser pulses in combination with hydrogen-based defect activation and passivation at a single center level. By choosing forming gas (N2/H2) during thermal annealing of carbon-implanted silicon, we can select the formation of a series of hydrogen and carbon-related quantum emitters, including T and Ci centers while passivating the more common G-centers. The Ci center is a telecom S-band emitter with promising optical and spin properties that consists of a single interstitial carbon atom in the silicon lattice. Density functional theory calculations show that the Ci center brightness is enhanced by several orders of magnitude in the presence of hydrogen. Fs-laser pulses locally affect the passivation or activation of quantum emitters with hydrogen for programmable formation of selected quantum emitters.

Silicon is the most scalable optoelectronic material but has suffered from its inability to generate directly and efficiently classical or quantum light on-chip. Scaling and integration are the most fundamental challenges facing quantum science and technology. We report an all-silicon quantum light source based on a single atomic emissive center embedded in a silicon-based nanophotonic cavity. We observe a more than 30-fold enhancement of luminescence, a near-unity atom-cavity coupling efficiency, and an 8-fold acceleration of the emission from the all-silicon quantum emissive center. Our work opens immediate avenues for large-scale integrated cavity quantum electrodynamics and quantum light-matter interfaces with applications in quantum communication and networking, sensing, imaging, and computing.

Miniature chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins play critical roles in DNA replication licensing, initiation and elongation. MCM8, one of the MCM proteins playing a critical role in DNA repairing and recombination, was found to have overexpression and increased DNA copy number in a variety of human malignancies. The gain of MCM8 is associated with aggressive clinical features of several human cancers. Increased expression of MCM8 in prostate cancer is associated with cancer recurrence. Forced expression of MCM8 in RWPE1 cells, the immortalized but non-transformed prostate epithelial cell line, exhibited fast cell growth and transformation, while knock down of MCM8 in PC3, DU145 and LNCaP cells induced cell growth arrest, and decreased tumour volumes and mortality of severe combined immunodeficiency mice xenografted with PC3 and DU145 cells. MCM8 bound cyclin D1 and activated Rb protein phosphorylation by cyclin-dependent kinase 4 in vitro and in vivo. The cyclin D1/MCM8 interaction is required for Rb phosphorylation and S-phase entry in cancer cells. As a result, our study showed that copy number increase and overexpression of MCM8 may play critical roles in human cancer development.

In the Malaysian setting of multi-ethnicity and high BCG coverage, interpretation of Tuberculin Skin Testing (TST) may be difficult. Between January 2001 and December 2003, a retrospective study on all adult patients with documented TST results treated for tuberculosis (TB) in chest clinics of two government hospitals was conducted to determine the reliability of TST and factors affecting its interpretation. One hundred and three patients [mean age (SD): 43 (17); male: 67%] were eligible for data collection: 72% and 57% of patients had positive TST results based on cut-off points of 10mm and 15mm respectively. The only significant univariate association with TST results was the severity of co-morbidity. A patient with co-morbidity score of 3 defined as those with any cancer, end-stage renal or liver disease, or HIV disease, was more likely to have a negative TST results [10mm cut-off point: Odd Ratio (95% CI) 6.6 (1.82 to 24.35), p = 0.003; 15mm cut-off point: 4.8 (1.21 to 18.95), p = 0.012]. A TST reading of 10mm had a higher sensitivity than 15mm as the cut-off point in diagnosing TB infection. Considering all possible confounding factors like ethnicity, prior BCG vaccination and TB burden in the population, severity of co-morbidity remains strongly predictive of a negative TST. Caution should be exercised in interpreting TST in these patients.
