OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture therapy for neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: We searched eight databases from their inception until 14 April 2024, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Periodical Database, and Wanfang Database. The search aimed to find randomized controlled trials assessing the effectiveness of acupuncture for neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. Literature screening and data extraction were performed independently by the authors. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan V.5.3 software, and Stata 17.0 software was used for detecting publication bias and performing sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies, involving 2148 participants, met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that acupuncture therapy improved depression-related scale scores (standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.70, 95%CI [-0.98, -0.42], p < 0.00001), anxiety-related scale scores (SMD = -0.78, 95% CI [-1.43, -0.14], p = 0.02), Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores (weighted mean difference (WMD) = 2.74, 95% CI [2.43, 3.05], p < 0.00001), Mini Mental State Examination scores (WMD = 2.36, 95% CI [0.78, 3.94], p = 0.003), Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale scores, and Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 scores (WMD = -2.66, 95% CI [-4.83, -0.49], p = 0.02) compared to controls. CONCLUSION: This review supports the application of acupuncture to reduce the severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms including depression, anxiety, and impulse control disorders, and to improve cognition and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. The adverse effects associated with acupuncture, either alone or as adjunctive therapy, were relatively minor.

Importance: Poor sleep quality greatly impairs quality of life and accelerates deterioration in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), but current remedies remain limited. Acupuncture, used as an adjunctive therapy with anti-Parkinson medications, has shown positive effects in patients with PD. However, high-quality clinical evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture for patients with PD and poor sleep quality is lacking. Objective: To assess the safety and efficacy of real acupuncture (RA) vs sham acupuncture (SA) as an adjunctive therapy for patients with PD who have poor sleep quality. Design, Setting, and Participants: This single-center randomized clinical trial was performed at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China from February 18, 2022, to February 18, 2023. Patients with PD and sleep complaints were recruited and randomized (1:1) to receive RA or SA treatment for 4 weeks. Data analysis was performed from April 12 to August 17, 2023. Intervention: Treatment with RA or SA for 4 weeks. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was the change in Parkinson Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS) scores measured at baseline, after 4 weeks of treatment, and at 8 weeks of follow-up. Results: Of the 83 participants enrolled, 78 (94.0%) completed the intervention and were included in the analysis. Their mean (SD) age was 64.1 (7.9) years; 41 (52.6%) were men and 37 (47.4%) were women. A significant increase in PDSS scores from baseline was observed for both the RA group (29.65 [95% CI, 24.65-34.65]; P < .001) and the SA group (10.47 [95% CI, 5.35-15.60]; P < .001). Compared with the SA group, the RA group had a significant increase in PDSS scores after 4 weeks of treatment (19.75 [95% CI, 11.02-28.49]; P < .001) and at 8 weeks of follow-up (20.24 [95% CI, 11.51-28.98]; P < .001). Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized clinical trial, acupuncture proved beneficial in improving sleep quality and quality of life among patients with PD. These findings suggest that the therapeutic effects of acupuncture could continue for up to 4 weeks. Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry Identifier: ChiCTR2200060655.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common non-motor symptoms among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly impact their overall quality of life detrimentally. Several studies have reported the clinical effect of acupuncture therapy in treating NPS in PD. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the potential inclusion of acupuncture therapy as an integral component of complementary treatment for PD with NPS. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: From their inception until 1 December 2023, we will search eight databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science Periodical Database, Chinese Citation Database and China Biology Medicine disc for randomised controlled trials examining the effectiveness of acupuncture for PD with NPS. Literature screening and data extraction will be carried out independently by the authors. RevMan V.5.3 software will be used for meta-analysis, while the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool will assess the potential for bias. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This systematic review protocol does not require ethical approval because it does not include private information or data of participants. Background: Nowadays, people's pace of life continues to rapid up, and many bad habits will accelerate the aging of the eye periphery, and patients with sunken upper eyelids are to be found in younger people. In young Asians, single eyelids are often accompanied by upper eyelid depression, so correcting the upper eyelid depression during blepharoplasty becomes a higher challenge for plastic surgeons. Current surgical methods for upper eyelid depression include three major categories: tissue repositioning, injection and filling, and combined use. According to grades 1 and 2 are mild or moderate upper eyelid sunken. The sunken can be well corrected only by repositioning the orbital fat pad, while the correction effect for severe upper eyelid sunken in grades 3 and 4 is Poor, need to be used in combination to achieve the desired effect. Purpose: The authors sought to determine whether, for patients with single eyelids and severe upper eyelid depression of grades 3 and 4, combined with orbital fat pad repositioning and autologous fat transplantation during blepharoplasty, an aesthetic and youthful blepharoplasty can be achieved. Methods: This study included 79 patients with single eyelids and severe upper eyelid depression of grades 3 and 4 who received treatment between June 2020 and July 2022. All patients underwent double eyelid surgery plus orbital fat repositioning and autologous fat grafting. Results: After a minimum follow-up period of 1 year, overall patient satisfaction was 92%. The recurrence rate within the first year was 6% and the complication rate was 5%. Conclusion: This combined surgery may be an option for young Asians with single eyelids and severe upper eyelid depression. In this study, the surgery resulted in natural-looking double eyelids and younger-looking eye sockets in most patients. A combination of different surgical methods based on the patient's preoperative condition is critical to achieving long-term correction.

Various treatment modalities have been applied to atrophic scars. Fractional CO2 laser treatment has attracted increasingly more attention because of its quicker recovery time and fewer side effects. However, its limitation of sculpting the edge is an urgent shortcoming. In order to achieve a more effective result with fewer complications, we have integrated ultrapulse CO2 and fractional CO2 lasers to for the treatment of facial atrophic scars. The study included 25 patients (10 males and 15 females) diagnosed with moderate to severe atrophic scars between August 2020 and July 2022. All subjects underwent the same surgical treatment. The effects were assessed at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months using photographic evidence. Objective evaluation of the results was conducted using a quartile grading scale, while the subjects' satisfaction and any adverse events were also recorded. The patients in the study underwent more than two laser sessions (2-5), resulting in substantial improvement in their appearance. The time interval between each session was 3-6 months. The majority of the patients (19/25, 76%) had a significant or even excellent improvement. Any adverse events observed, such as erythema, superficial crusting, and PIH, were of a mild nature and temporary in duration. This treatment combined two CO2 lasers is an effective and safe choice for atrophic scars in Asians.

The management of chronic wounds in diabetes remains challenging due to the complexity of impaired wound healing, delayed healing, susceptibility to infection, and elevated risk of reopening, highlighting the need for effective chronic wound management with innovative approaches such as multifunctional hydrogels. Here, we have produced HA-DA@rhCol hydrogels consisting of dopamine-modified hyaluronic acid and recombinant human collagen type-III (rhCol) by oxidative coupling of the catechol group using the H2O2/HRP catalytic system. The post-reactive hydrogel has a good porous structure, swelling rate, reasonable degradation, rheological and mechanical properties, and the catechol group and dopamine impart to the hydrogel tissue adhesiveness, antioxidant capacity, and excellent photothermal effects leading to superior in vitro antimicrobial activity. In addition, the ability of rhCol to confer hydrogels to promote angiogenesis and wound repair has also been investigated. Cytotoxicity and hemolysis tests demonstrated the good biocompatibility of the hydrogel. Wound closure, collagen deposition and immunohistochemical examination confirmed the ability of the hydrogel to promote diabetic wound healing. In summary, the adhesive hemostatic antioxidative hydrogel with rhCol to promote wound healing in diabetic rat is an excellent chronic wound dressing.

The various tissue damages are a severe problem to human health. The limited human tissue regenerate ability requires suitable biomaterials to help damage tissue repair and regeneration. Therefore, many researchers devoted themselves to exploring biomaterials suitable for tissue repair and regeneration. Polydopamine (PDA) as a natural and multifunctional material which is inspired by mussel has been widely applied in different biomaterials. The excellent properties of PDA, such as strong adhesion, photothermal and high drug-loaded capacity, seem to be born for tissue repair and regeneration. Furthermore, PDA combined with different materials can exert unexpected effects. Thus, to inspire researchers, this review summarizes the recent and representative development of PDA biomaterials in tissue repair and regeneration. This article focuses on why apply PDA in these biomaterials and what PDA can do in different tissue injuries.

Wounds and the subsequent formation of scars constitute a unified and complex phased process. Effective treatment is crucial; however, the diverse therapeutic approaches for different wounds and scars, as well as varying treatment needs at different stages, present significant challenges in selecting appropriate interventions. Microneedle patch (MNP), as a novel minimally invasive transdermal drug delivery system, has the potential for integrated and programmed treatment of various diseases and has shown promising applications in different types of wounds and scars. In this comprehensive review, the latest applications and biotechnological innovations of MNPs in these fields are thoroughly explored, summarizing their powerful abilities to accelerate healing, inhibit scar formation, and manage related symptoms. Moreover, potential applications in various scenarios are discussed. Additionally, the side effects, manufacturing processes, and material selection to explore the clinical translational potential are investigated. This groundwork can provide a theoretical basis and serve as a catalyst for future innovations in the pursuit of favorable therapeutic options for skin tissue regeneration.

The rational design of efficient nanozymes and the immobilization of enzymes are of great significance for the construction of high-performance biosensors based on nano-/bioenzyme catalytic systems. Herein, a novel V-TCPP(Fe) metal-organic framework nanozyme with a two-dimensional nanosheet morphology is rationally designed by using V2CTx MXene as a metal source and iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (FeTCPP) ligand as an organic linker. It exhibits enhanced peroxidase- and catalase-like activities and luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescent (CL) behavior. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, these excellent enzyme-like activities are derived from the two-site synergistic effect between V nodes and FeTCPP ligands in V-TCPP(Fe). Furthermore, a confined catalytic system is developed by zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) coencapsulation of the V-TCPP(Fe) nanozyme and bioenzyme. Using the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as a model, our constructed V-TCPP(Fe)/AChE@ZIF confined catalytic system was successfully used for the colorimetric/CL dual-mode visual biosensing of organophosphorus pesticides. This work is expected to provide new insights into the design of efficient nanozymes and confined catalytic systems, encouraging applications in catalysis and biosensing.

Wound healing is an urgent clinical challenge, particularly in the case of chronic wounds. Traditional approaches to wound healing have limited therapeutic efficacy due to lengthy healing times, risk of immune rejection, and susceptibility to infection. Recently, adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (ADSC-exos) have emerged as a promising modality for tissue regeneration and wound repair. In this study, the development of a novel extracellular matrix hydrogel@exosomes (ECM@exo) is reported, which entails incorporation of ADSC-exos into an extracellular matrix hydrogel (ECM hydrogel). This solution forms a hydrogel at physiological temperature (≈37 °C) upon local injection into the wound site. ECM@exo enables sustained release of ADSC-exos from the ECM hydrogel, which maintains high local concentrations at the wound site. The ECM hydrogel displays good biocompatibility and biodegradability. The in vivo and in vitro results demonstrate that ECM@exo treatment effectively reduces inflammation and promotes angiogenesis, collagen deposition, cell proliferation, and migration, thereby accelerating the wound healing process. Overall, this innovative therapeutic approach offers a new avenue for wound healing via a biological hydrogel with controlled exosome release.

Holography, which can provide the information of phase as well as amplitude of a laser probe, could be a powerful method to diagnose the electron density and temperature of a plasma simultaneously. In this paper, digital holography with an ultrashort laser pulse is applied to diagnose laser-produced aluminum plasmas. Detailed analyses show that the reconstruction of the wave amplitude could be profoundly affected by the difference between the phase and group velocity of the ultrashort laser pulse in the plasma, which makes it a challenge to accurately reconstruct the amplitude in the case when ultrashort laser pulses are utilized for high-temporal resolution of holography.

In this paper, we present a highly effective microfluidic emulsion system using an integrated microchannel plate (MCP), a porous glass membrane that is readily available and densely packs millions of through-microchannels, for high-throughput production of monodisperse droplets. The physical controls of droplet formation, including viscosity, flow rate, and pore size, have been extensively explored for optimum emulsification conditions. The performance of the device has been validated where monodisperse droplets with a narrow coefficient of variance (<5%) can be achieved at a dispersed phase flux of 3 mL h-1 from a piece of 4 × 4 mm2 MCP. The average droplet size is two times the nominal membrane pore diameter and thus can be easily controlled by choosing the appropriate membrane type. The preparation of hydrogel microspheres has also been demonstrated with a high throughput of 1.5 × 106 particles min-1. These microspheres with a uniform size range and rough surface morphology provide suitable bioenvironments and serve as ideal carriers for cell culture. Mouse fibroblasts are shown to be cultured on these 3D scaffolds with an average cell viability of over 96%. The cell attachment rate can reach up to 112 ± 7% in 24 h and the proliferation ability increases with the number of culture days. Furthermore, the device has been applied in the droplet digital polymerase chain reaction for absolute quantification of lung cancer-related PLAU genes. The detection limit achieved was noted to be 0.5 copies/µL with a dynamic range of 105 ranging from 1 × 102 to 1 × 106 copies/µL. Given the easy fabrication, robust performance, and simple operation, the emulsion system sets the stage for the laboratory's droplet-based assays and applications in tissue engineering.

CONCLUSION: Upon wound formation, the wound temperature rises in the first 3-4 days until reaching its peak. It then falls at about one week after wound formation. In the second week after wound formation, the wound temperature decreases steadily to the baseline indicating a good wound condition and progression towards healing. While a continuous high temperature is often a sign of excessive inflammation or infection, which indicates urgent need of intervention and treatment.

Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin is difficult to degrade and classified as hazardous organic waste. To address this concern, the co-pyrolysis behavior of UF resin with pine sawdust (PS) was studied, and the adsorption properties of pyrocarbon were evaluated with Cr (VI). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that adding a small amount of PS can improve the pyrolysis behavior of UF resin. Based on the Flynn Wall Ozawa (FWO) method, the kinetics and activation energy values were estimated. It was observed that when the amount of UF resin exceeded twice that of PS, the activation energy of the reaction decreased, and they acted synergistically. The characterization of pyrocarbon samples showed that the specific surface area increased with the increase of temperature, while the content of functional groups showed the opposite trend. Intermittent adsorption experiments showed that 5UF + PS400 achieved 95% removal of 50 mg/L Cr (VI) at 0.6 g/L dosage and at pH 2. The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the maximum adsorption was 143.66 mg/g at 30 ℃. Furthermore, the adsorption process consisted of electrostatic adsorption, chelation, and redox reaction. Overall, this study provides a useful reference for the co-pyrolysis of UF resin and the adsorption capacity of pyrocarbon.

The incidence of chronic diabetic wounds is increasing with the growing number of diabetic patients, and conventional wound dressings have proven to be ineffective in treating them. To address this challenge, researchers have developed artificial dermal substitutes using collagen and hyaluronic acid, which are crucial extracellular matrices. However, these subsitiues lack precision and targeted treatment. To overcome this limitation, a gene liposome nanocomplex-loaded dermal substitute (GDS) has been developed as a potential solution. This innovative biomaterial combines the benefits of liposome nanocomplexes with dermal substitutes to offer a more accurate and effective treatment option for chronic diabetic wounds. The GDS has the ability to deliver genes and therapeutic agents specifically to the wound site, promoting angiogenesis and accelerating the wound healing process. Overall, the GDS presents a promising new approach for the clinical treatment of chronic diabetic wounds, offering a targeted and effective solution for this growing problem.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in treating Parkinson's disease-related constipation (PDC). Materials and methods: This was a randomized, controlled trial in which patients, outcome assessors, and statisticians were all blinded. Seventy-eight eligible patients were randomly assigned to either the manual acupuncture (MA) or sham acupuncture (SA) groups and received 12 sessions of treatment over a 4-week period. Following treatment, patients were monitored until the eighth week. The primary outcome was the change in weekly complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBMs) from baseline after treatment and follow-up. The Constipation Symptom and Efficacy Assessment Scale (CSEAS), the Patient-Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life questionnaire (PAC-QOL), and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) were used as secondary outcomes. Results: In the intention-to-treat analysis, 78 patients with PDC were included, with 71 completing the 4-week intervention and 4-week follow-up. When compared to the SA group, weekly CSBMs were significantly increased after treatment with the MA group (P < 0.001). Weekly CSBMs in the MA group were 3.36 [standard deviation (SD) 1.44] at baseline and increased to 4.62 (SD, 1.84) after treatment (week 4). The SA group's weekly CSBMs were 3.10 (SD, 1.45) at baseline and 3.03 (SD, 1.25) after treatment, with no significant change from baseline. The effect on weekly CSBMs improvement in the MA group lasted through the follow-up period (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Acupuncture was found to be effective and safe in treating PDC in this study, and the treatment effect lasted up to 4 weeks. BACKGROUND: Vaginal tightening or vaginoplasty has been gaining popularity, while validated methods of evaluation and treatment are still lacking. Herein, we describe a bilateral wall tightening technique for vaginal laxity and evaluate the feasibility of this method. METHODS: From April 2020 to September 2021, 25 women with vaginal laxity underwent vaginal tightening, and 22 women were included in this retrospective observational study. The inclusion criteria were as follows: participants with at least one delivery and reported vaginal laxity, but without a history of underlying diseases. Vaginal pressure tests and questionnaires were used to evaluate vaginal laxity and sexual quality before and 6 months after the surgery. RESULTS: The study included 22 women (aged 29-46 years), and the follow-up period was 14.1 ± 3.3 months. The score based on the vaginal laxity questionnaire was improved as a result of surgery (preoperative median: 2.00, interquartile range [IQR]: 1.00-2.00; postoperative median: 5.00, IQR: 5.00-6.25, p < 0.001). The vaginal pressure increased from 2.3 ± 1.8 mm/Hg to 21.4 ± 3.7 mm/Hg. Sexual distress changed from 24.2 ± 8.9-16.1 ± 4.8 after surgery (p < 0.001), and sexual dysfunction with an average score of 20.1 ± 10.6 before surgery improved after the procedure (26.0 ± 10.8, p < 0.001). Women also reported improved scores in desire, arousal, orgasm, and satisfaction. In addition, there were no intraoperative complications or significant events during the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral vaginal tightening without mucosal excision is a feasible and effective surgical approach for the management of vaginal laxity.
