We assessed eight acoustic indices as proxies for bird species richness in the National Science Complex (NSC), University of the Philippines Diliman. The acoustic indices were the normalized Acoustic Complexity Index (nACI), Acoustic Diversity Index (ADI), inverse Acoustic Evenness Index (1-AEI), Bioacoustic Index (BI), Acoustic Entropy Index (H), Temporal Entropy Index (Ht), Spectral Entropy Index (Hf), and Acoustic Richness Index (AR). Low-cost, automated sound recorders using a Raspberry Pi were placed in three sites at the NSC to continuously collect 5-min sound samples from July 2020 to January 2022. We selected 840 5-min sound samples, equivalent to 70 hours, through stratified sampling and pre-processed them before conducting acoustic index analysis on the raw and pre-processed data. We measured Spearman's correlation between each acoustic index and bird species richness obtained from manual spectrogram scanning and listening to recordings. We compared the correlation coefficients between the raw and pre-processed.wav files to assess the robustness of the indices using Fisher's z-transformation. Additionally, we used GLMMs to determine how acoustic indices predict bird species richness based on season and time of day. The Spearman's rank correlation and GLMM analysis showed significant, weak negative correlations between the nACI, 1-AEI, Ht, and AR with bird species richness. The weak correlations suggest that the performance of acoustic indices are dependent on various factors, such as the local noise conditions, bird species composition, season, and time of day. Thus, ground-truthing of the acoustic indices should be done before applying them in studies. Among the eight indices, the nACI was the best-performing index, performing consistently across sites and independently of season and time of day. We highlight the importance of pre-processing sound data from urban settings and other noisy environments before acoustic index analysis, as this strengthens the correlation between index values and bird species richness.

The wavelength-dependent photo-reactivity of polyanthracene was explored upon UV-C and VIS light irradiation. The material was prepared via one-pot chemical oxidation route using FeCl3 as oxidizing agent. A decrease in surface hydrophobicity of a polyanthracene-coated poly(methylmethacrylate) substrate from 109.11° to 60.82° was observed upon UV-C exposure for 48 hrs which was attributed to increase in oxygen content at the surface, as validated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Upon exposure to ultraviolet-visible LEDs, photo-dimerization of polyanthracene in solution occurred and was monitored using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The photo-dimer product formation decreased from 381 nm to 468 nm and was found to be higher for the polyanthracene material compared to the monomer anthracene. At 381 nm, photo-dimerization of the material was found to be approx. 4x more efficient than the non-substituted monomer counterpart. Results obtained show that photo-dimerization of polyanthracene will proceed upon exposure with visible light LEDs with reduction in efficiency at longer wavelengths. To compensate, irradiation power of the light source and irradiation time were increased.

The reversible photo-induced [4+4] cycloaddition reaction of anthracene enables multiple cycles of dimerization and scission, allowing phototunable linkage of molecular fragments for the synthesis of polymer scaffolds. New functional materials ranging from hydrogels to shape-memory polymers were designed from anthryl-polymer systems because of their diverse photochemical reactivity and responsiveness. Light as an external stimulus allows for the remote and precise spatiotemporal control of materials without the need for additional reagents. Depending on how the photoreactive anthracene moieties were introduced, the interaction of anthryl-polymer systems with light results in various processes such as polymerization, cyclization, and cross-linking. Structural modifications of anthracene derivatives could shift their absorption from the ultraviolet to the visible light region, widening their range of applications including biologically relevant studies. These applications are further diversified and enhanced by the reversibility of the dimerization reaction using light and heat as stimuli. In this review, current developments in the synthesis and photodimerization of anthracene-containing polymers and their emerging applications in the fabrication of new materials are discussed.

Corrosion is clearly one of the more common causes of materials failure in stainless steel. To manage corrosion, chemical inhibitors are often used for prevention and control. Ionic liquids due to their hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant property are being explored as alternative protective coatings and anti-corrosion materials. In this particular study, ionic liquids containing functionalized imidazolium cations and tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (FAP) anions were investigated for their ability to inhibit corrosion on stainless steel surfaces in acidic environment. Using surface characterization techniques, specifically scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), the morphology and the elemental composition of the steel surfaces before and after corrosion were determined. Contact angle measurements were also performed to determine how these ionic liquids were able to wet the stainless steel surface. In addition, potentiodynamic studies were carried out to ensure that corrosion inhibition has occurred. Results show that these ionic liquids were able to inhibit corrosion on the stainless steel surfaces. This indicates promise in the use of these FAP-based ionic liquids for corrosion management in stainless steel.

RESUMO

We present a method of reshaping light in three dimensions via phase modulation. The method calculates the target computer-generated hologram individually and adds to it an appropriate transfer function to translate the reconstruction to any location in space. We are able to simultaneously generate independently controlled arbitrary patterns at different positions using a single laser beam.

Numerical investigations of escape panic of confined pedestrians have revealed interesting dynamical features such as pedestrian arch formation around an exit, disruptive interference, self-organized queuing, and scale-free behavior. However, these predictions have remained unverified because escape panic experiments with real systems are difficult to perform. For mice escaping out of a water pool, we found that for a critical sampling rate the escape behavior exhibits the predicted features even at short observation times. The mice escaped via an exit in bursts of different sizes that obey exponential and (truncated) power-law distributions depending on exit width. Oversampling or undersampling the mouse escape rate prevents the observation of the predicted features. Real systems are normally subject to unavoidable constraints arising from occupancy rate, pedestrian exhaustion, and nonrigidity of pedestrian bodies. The effect of these constraints on the dynamics of real escape panic is also studied.

We study the behavior of the point-spread function (PSF) of the confocal scanning optical microscope (CSOM) when the available optical energy density from the sample plane is low (<7.5 microJoule/micrometers2). The PSF profile is analyzed under three photon-limited imaging conditions: (1) reflection-type CSOM with a weak source and a perfectly reflecting sample, (2) reflection-type CSOM with a strong illumination source and a weak sample, and (3) fluorescence CSOM with a weak fluorescent sample. Linfoot's image quality criteria of fidelity, structural content, and correlation quality are used to assess the reproducibility of the PSF profile as a function of the photon number. Low photon numbers yield a PSF profile that is difficult to maintain from one location in the sample plane to another. The optical sectioning capability of the CSOM was found to deteriorate more quickly against light power reduction than its transverse resolving power. The signal-to-noise ratio of the scanned CSOM image improves exponentially with the photon number from the sample plane. The noise that is generated by an unstable PSF has an average amplitude that decreases exponentially with the photon number and is significant only at low photon numbers. The CSOM image quality deteriorates because of spurious high-frequency components, degradation in the PSF dynamic range, and varying resolving power.
