RESUMO

The chemical contamination (organic compounds, metals, radionuclides, microplastics, nutrients) of English Channel waters has been reviewed, focussing on the sources, concentrations and impacts. River loads were only reliable for Pb, whereas atmospheric loads appeared robust for Cd, Pb, Hg, PCB-153 and γ-HCH. Temporal trends in atmospheric inputs were decreasing. Contaminant concentrations in biota were relatively constant or decreasing, but not for Cd, Hg and HBCDD, and deleterious impacts on fish and copepods were reported. However, data on ecotoxicological effects were generally sparse for legacy and emerging contaminants. Intercomparison of activity concentrations of artificial radionuclides in sediments and biota on both Channel coasts was hindered by differences in methodological approaches. Riverine phosphate loads decreased with time, while nitrate loads remained uniform. Increased biomass of algae, attributable to terrestrial inputs of nutrients, has affected benthic production and shellfisheries. A strategic approach to the identification of contaminant impacts on marine biota is recommended.

RESUMO

The authors report the case of an 8-year-old girl of Caucasian origin who attended the Emergency Eye Clinic with a 3-week history of a red, light sensitive left eye during the month of April. Her Snellen visual acuities were 6/5 right and 6/9 left. Examination revealed perilimbal injection and anterior chamber inflammation in the left eye consistent with an anterior uveitis. Inferior stromal haze and fine keratic precipitates were noted in the left cornea. Intraocular pressures were normal, with no vitritis and healthy looking discs, maculae and peripheral retina. Systemic examination revealed a papular rash over the face consistent with previously diagnosed Hydroa vaccineforme. With intensive topical steroids the inflammation gradually resolved.

Results from the first multi-constituent dynamic modelling study of the Humber estuarine system over seasonal time scales are presented. The model, constructed within the ECoS3 simulation software, has been calibrated using data obtained from 27 surveys of the Yorkshire Ouse and Humber estuaries during 1994-1996. The model is tidally averaged, and is one-dimensional in the vertical and in cross-section. Daily-varying longitudinal concentration profiles of SPM, POC, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium have been simulated, and these have been compared with the observations used for model calibration (model confirmation). The fits are generally good. The model captures the marked seasonal variability in concentrations of the particulate constituents (SPM, POC), and places the turbidity maximum in approximately the correct region of the estuary. There was a high degree of scatter in the SPM and POC concentrations measured due to tidal resuspension, which was not reproduced by the tidally averaged model. Comparisons between measured and simulated nitrate+nitrite are satisfactory, although for a number of surveys the modelled values are systematically too low in the lower Yorkshire Ouse and upper Humber. These discrepancies are not readily explained, but may be linked to inadequately characterised source terms for this nitrogen. The general trends in the concentrations and distributions of ammonium are reproduced by the model, despite the plethora of external inputs of this constituent, and significant modifications to ammonium transport by in situ nitrification and benthic exchange. The simulated concentrations and distributions have also been tested against independent data encapsulating axial transects in the Trent and Humber estuaries, and temporal variations at fixed sites on the Trent and Yorkshire Ouse estuaries. With some exceptions, the fits between the model results and these data are also good. The model has also been used to construct constituent budgets (external/internal sources and sinks) for each estuary for 1994, 1995 and 1996. Riverine inputs of SPM, POC, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium decreased over the 3 years, presumably reflecting changing patterns of terrestrial runoff coupled to a reduction in effluent inputs. This trend was also observed in the point discharges of these constituents direct to the estuary. The simulated estuary was a source of sediments to the North Sea during 1994 and 1996, but a sink during 1995. The difference has been ascribed to the exceptionally dry summer and autumn of 1995, in which up-estuary tidal 'pumping' of SPM was dominant over down-estuary flushing by river water. Fluvial inputs represent an important external source of POC to the model estuary (27-55%), as does the North Sea (26-58%). These inputs are exceeded by POC loss via bacterial remineralisation, suggesting that the estuarine bed is a net source of POC. Riverine inputs account for 76-77% of the external inputs of nitrate. This constituent behaves quasi-conservatively in the estuary, reflecting the dilution of nitrate-rich river waters with low-nitrate coastal water, although nitrification is a significant input (approx. 21%). Denitrification is small, and consequently all nitrate added to the estuary is lost to the North Sea. External loads of nitrite are small and ammonium nitrification accounts for approximately 93% of its annual input. Practically all of the nitrite is oxidised to nitrate, and little escapes to the North Sea. The fluvial and direct waste inputs of ammonium to the estuary are of similar size. Most of the ammonium in the model is nitrified (98-100%) and only a few tons are exported to the North Sea. In 1996 the estuary appears to have been a sink for coastal water ammonium. Constituent budgets are compared with independently evaluated fluxes. There is good agreement in a number of cases, but the comparison highlights the main uncertainties in the simulated fluxes. It is concluded that the model as currently formulated provides an excellent basis for heuristic studies of the Humber estuarine system.

There have been several reports on storage protocols for the determination of nutrients in natural waters but each one has been limited to a particular sample matrix and they have reached different, matrix specific conclusions. The aim of this study was therefore to systematically apply the various recommended storage protocols to a range of natural water matrices. Samples from four contrasting sites in the UK, collected in late winter (February, 1999), were filtered and stored under different conditions (-80 degrees C, -20 degrees C, 4 degrees C and at 4 degrees C and -20 degrees C with 0.1% (v/v) chloroform) for up to 247 days prior to analysis. The sites were the River Frome in Dorset (a chalk stream catchment) and three sites from the Tamar Estuary (draining a non-chalk catchment) with salinities of 0.5 per thousand, 10 per thousand and 34 per thousand, Samples and controls were analysed for total oxidised nitrogen (TON) and filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) using a segmented flow analyser with spectrophotometric detection. To investigate possible seasonal effects (particularly changes in biological and chemical matrix composition). a second sampling campaign was undertaken in early autumn (October, 1999). The results showed that the optimum storage conditions for the determination of TON and FRP were highly matrix dependent. with significant differences in FRP stability between the Frome and Tamar catchments (due to different calcium concentrations) and between samples of different salinities (due to different bacterial populations and/or dissolved organic matter). General guidelines for sample handling and storage are listed and matrix specific recommendations presented for samples rich in calcium and dissolved organic matter.

This paper examines spatial and temporal variability in freshwater inputs of trace elements and major ions to the tidal reaches of the River Tweed. The relationships between concentrations of major ions and trace elements (in dissolved and acid-available particulate forms) and flow are examined, and a simple two-component endmember mixing analysis performed to link river water chemistry to catchment sources, and to identify whether within-river processes modify concentrations to produce non-conservative behaviour. The results indicate that most dissolved major ions and trace elements behave conservatively in the lower reaches of the River Tweed, the variability in concentrations being dominated by hydrology and the existence of different high-flow and low-flow endmember runoff chemistries. This suggests that the variability in concentration of most dissolved trace elements and major ions in the lower Tweed can be modelled using simple mixing relationships. However, the relationships between pH, Ca, Mg and Gran alkalinity show pronounced non-conservative behaviour, indicating the importance of understanding within-river process for modelling these determinants. The non-conservative behaviour identified is related to biological controls and the resultant diurnal variations in pH which promote daytime removal of Ca from solution by precipitation of calcium carbonate (and corresponding removal of Mg by co-precipitation) during extreme low-flow conditions and algal blooms during the summer.

Results are presented from a campaign of measurements that were undertaken to examine seasonal variability in physical and chemical fluxes and processes within the Tweed Estuary during the period September 1996-August 1997. The study utilised monthly surveys, each of approximately 1 week duration. This article interprets a subset of the salinity, temperature, turbidity [suspended particulate matter (SPM) levels] and chlorophyll a data. Measurements discussed here were obtained throughout the estuary during high-speed transects that covered the region between the tidal river and the coastal zone. Longitudinal distributions of surface salinity depended strongly on freshwater runoff. During high runoff the surface salinity was low and the freshwater-saltwater interface (FSI) was located close to the mouth. The reverse was true at times of low runoff. Salinity stratification was generally strong. During the surveys, river runoff temperatures ranged from approximately 2 to 18 degrees C and coastal waters (approximately 33 salinity) from approximately 6 to 15 degrees C. Turbidity was low throughout the campaign (SPM < 30 mg l(-1)). Because of rapid flushing times (one or two tides), turbidity tended to mix conservatively between river and coastal waters. Higher coastal turbidity was associated with stronger wind events, and higher fluvial turbidity with spate events. Suspended chlorophyll a levels were usually low throughout the estuary (typically < 2 microg l(-1)) and showed large spatial variability. Because of the rapid flushing of the estuary, it is hypothesised that it was not possible for several algal cell divisions to occur before algae were flushed to the coastal zone. A 'bloom' occurred during the May 1997 survey, when chlorophyll a levels reached 14 microg l(-1). Higher chlorophyll a concentrations at that time occurred at very low salinities, indicating that these waters and algae were largely fluvially derived, and may have resulted from increasing springtime solar irradiation.

Monthly axial profiles of the Tweed Estuary were carried out between July 1996 and August 1997 as part of the UK Natural Environment Research Council Land Ocean Interaction Study. During these surveys, master variables and a range of chemical constituents, including pH and total alkalinity, were measured between the mouth of the estuary, at Berwick-upon-Tweed, and the freshwater tidal reach, at Union Bridge, approximately 10 km up-estuary. Alkalinity and pH showed clear seasonal variations in values within the lower salinity region of the estuary, and these could be related largely to changes in river flows, and hence to variations in the ratios of the source waters. River waters at high flows were dominated by poorly buffered surficial runoff, and pH and alkalinity values were low; conversely at low flows, groundwaters rich in weathered bedrock ions dominated the river water, and pH and alkalinity values were significantly higher. Biological production and respiration also had an effect on this seasonal variability, although this was secondary. The behaviour of pH and alkalinity within the estuary appeared generally conservative, although apparent non-conservative distributions were observed in the freshwater tidal reach. In a number of cases this behaviour could be attributed to biological activity. Estimated values of the excess partial pressures of CO2 within the fresh-water tidal reach were low (< 4), reflecting the relatively pristine character of the Tweed. During the spring and summer, CO2 was significantly undersaturated with respect to the atmosphere; extensive production by bed-anchored macroalgae was probably the reason for this, although the effects of water column algae cannot be discounted. In winter, production was minimal and respiration more important. As a result, partial pressures within the water column increased to a maximum of approximately four times atmospheric. Only infrequently was the CO2 in equilibrium between the river and atmosphere, suggesting that the tidal reach of the Tweed is a dynamic environment with respect to carbon cycling processes.

Data are presented for particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations in the Humber Estuary and tidal River Ouse Estuary. The POC data were derived from approximately monthly surveys and are consistent with data reported for suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the non-tidal River Ouse (the freshwater river) and with SPM, or bed sediments, in estuarine ecosystems such as the Mississippi, Delaware, San Francisco Bay, Tolo Harbour, the Vellar Estuary and Cochin Backwater, as well as the Loire, Gironde, Ems and Tamar Estuaries. Relative to the dry weight of SPM, the Humber-averaged organic carbon and nitrogen percentages during the year February 1995-March 1996 were 2.6 +/- 0.6% (mean and S.D.) and 0.21 +/- 0.04%, respectively. The ratio of Humber-averaged POC to Humber-averaged PN was 13 +/- 3. Higher POC levels were observed near the Humber's mouth and in the adjacent coastal zone during 'bloom' conditions, and in the upper estuarine reaches during large, winter and springtime freshwater inflows. At these times of high runoff, the POC content of SPM increased progressively up-estuary from the coastal zone to the tidal River Ouse. When inflows became very low, during late spring to early autumn of 1995, both the freshwater-saltwater interface (FSI) and the strengthening turbidity maximum (TM) moved further up-estuary and the POC content of SPM in the upper reaches of the Ouse became lower compared with that immediately down-estuary. This led to a poorly defined POC maximum near the confluence of the Humber, Ouse and Trent, before POC eventually decreased again towards the coastal zone. The lower POC contents in the upper estuarine reaches of the tidal Ouse may have been partly due to POC respiration by heterotrophic bacteria attached to SPM within the TM, consistent with the severe oxygen depletion observed there during high turbidity, summertime spring tides.
