RESUMO

Concurrent structural and electronic transformations in VO2 thin films are of 2-fold importance: enabling fine-tuning of the emergent electrical properties in functional devices, yet creating an intricate interfacial domain structure of transitional phases. Despite the importance of understanding the structure of VO2 thin films, a detailed real-space atomic structure analysis in which the oxygen atomic columns are also resolved is lacking. Moreover, intermediate atomic structures have remained elusive due to the lack of robust atomically resolved quantitative analysis. Here, we directly resolve both V and O atomic columns and discover the presence of intermediate monoclinic (M2) phase nanolayers (less than 2 nm thick) in epitaxially grown VO2 films on a TiO2 (001) substrate, where the dominant part of VO2 undergoes a transition from the tetragonal (rutile) phase to the monoclinic M1 phase. Strain analysis suggests that the presence of the M2 phase is related to local strain gradients near the TiO2/VO2 interface. We unfold the crucial role of imaging the spatial configurations of the oxygen anions (in addition to V cations) by utilizing atomic-resolution electron microscopy. Our approach can be used to unravel the structural transitions in a wide range of correlated oxides, offering substantial implications for, e.g., optoelectronics and ferroelectrics.

RESUMO

We use in situ Lorentz microscopy and off-axis electron holography to investigate the formation and characteristics of skyrmion lattice defects and their relationship to the underlying crystallographic structure of a B20 FeGe thin film. We obtain experimental measurements of spin configurations at grain boundaries, which reveal inversions of crystallographic and magnetic chirality across adjacent grains, resulting in the formation of interface spin stripes at the grain boundaries. In the absence of material defects, we observe that skyrmions lattices possess dislocations and domain boundaries, in analogy to atomic crystals. Moreover, the distorted skyrmions can flexibly change their size and shape to accommodate local geometry, especially at sites of dislocations in the skyrmion lattice. Our findings provide a detailed understanding of the elasticity of topologically protected skyrmions and their correlation with underlying material defects.

RESUMO

Novel caustic phenomena, which contain fold, butterfly and elliptic umbilic catastrophes, are observed in defocused images of two approximately collinear oppositely biased metallic tips in a transmission electron microscope. The observed patterns depend sensitively on defocus, on the applied voltage between the tips and on their separation and lateral offset. Their main features are interpreted on the basis of a projected electrostatic potential model for the electron-optical phase shift.

RESUMO

Redox reactions were studied at a single yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/Pt electrode interface, in parallel with pure YSZ with no catalyst electrode, by in situ analytical electron microscopy at elevated temperatures and in an oxygen atmosphere. In situ electron holography showed that the oxide underwent reduction at elevated temperatures in a vacuum and was consequently reoxidized upon exposure to an oxygen flux at the same temperature. In situ energy loss spectroscopy measurements were in agreement with in situ electron holography observations and indicated that the oxidation state of the host cation zirconium was altered in the reduced state of the YSZ to the metastable state Zr(3+).

RESUMO

Off-axis electron holography has been extended to in situ observations in gas atmospheres. The Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-Pt hetero-interface was characterized by electron holography at high temperature in a vacuum and in an oxygen atmosphere. Analysis of the phase shift profiles revealed high mobility of anions in the oxide in the vicinity of the interface in the oxygen atmosphere. This would compensate for any increase in the number of oxygen vacancies in YSZ through the metal interface.
