RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The tongue in groove technique (TIG) is a useful technique for the correction of the nasal tip projection and the nasolabial angle. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of this technique for nasal tip rotation and projection correction in the Iranian society. METHODS: This is a retrospective clinical trial study of 20 patients undergoing open septo-rhinoplasty using TIG technique from January 2017 to August 2019 at the oral and maxillofacial unit of Bu Ali Hospital and private sector. Preoperative and postoperative profile view photographs were compared to assess the changes in tip projection and rotation. RESULTS: Fifteen patients (75%) had normal angular size, and 5 of them (25%) were not within the normal range after the surgery. The Fisher exact test showed that this success was statistically significant (P = 0.006). Ten patients (50%) had normal projection size, postoperatively. The Fisher exact test showed that this effect was statistically significant (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated the benefit of TIG on the correction of nasal tip projection and rotation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The hypocaloric diets improve glycemic status in obese individuals, but the response to hypocaloric diets in fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO)-rs9939609 gene variant is unknown. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the gene-diet interaction of FTO-rs9939609 gene variant and hypocaloric diets on glycemic control in overweight and obese adults. METHODS: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Google scholar were searched up to December 2018, for relevant clinical trials. Mean changes in fasting blood sugar (FBS), serum insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were extracted. RESULTS: The pooled analysis of nine studies showed that there was no significant difference between AA/AT and TT genotypes in FBS (weighted mean difference [WMD] = 0.01, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.08, 1.10, P = 0.984) and serum insulin (WMD = 0.20, 95% CI: -0.85, 1.26; P = 0.707) after intervention hypocaloric diets. The overweight/obese participants in AA/AT group showed the greatest reduction in HOMA-IR compared with TT genotype following intervention, and this difference was not statistically significant (WMD = -0.38, 95% CI: -0.94, 0.16, P = 0.167). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that there was no significant difference between AA/AT and TT genotypes of FTO-rs9939609 on FBS, serum insulin level, and insulin resistance in response to hypocaloric diets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adherence to a DASH- style diet has been reported to be associated with several health-related outcomes. A limited number of reports suggest that diet is an important behavioral determinant of insomnia. The current study aimed to explore the relationship between adherence to a DASH diet and the prevalence of insomnia in adolescent girls. METHODS: A total of 488 adolescent girls aged 12-18 years old were recruited from different regions of Khorasan Razavi in northeastern of Iran, using a random cluster sampling method. DASH scores were determined according to the method of Fung et al. A validated Iranian version of the Insomnia Severity Index questionnaire was used to assess sleep insomnia. To assess the association between the DASH dietary pattern and insomnia, we applied logistic regression analysis in crude and adjusted models. RESULTS: As may be expected, participants in the upper quintile of the DASH diet had significantly higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, fish and nuts and lower consumption of refined grains, red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets. We found that a high adherence to a DASH-style diet was associated with a lower odds of insomnia (OR: 0.51; 95% CI 0.26-1.00) compared with those with lowest adherence. Similar results were found after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS: There is an inverse association between adherence to DASH dietary patterns and insomnia. Further prospective studies are required to demonstrate these findings.

RESUMO

Limited studies have examined the effects of vitamin D on liver enzymes in patients with liver disease but none has explored its effects in the healthy subjects. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of a high dose vitamin D supplementation on measures of liver function. A total of 988 adolescent girls were recruited; all were assessed for liver function tests (LFTs) including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), gamma-glutamyl transferase (ϒGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, albumin, and total protein before and after supplementation with 50,000 IU cholecalciferol perls. Significant reductions were observed for AST, ALT, direct bilirubin, total bilirubin, LDH, and ϒGT at the end of supplementation, only in the group with abnormal reference value. Serum levels of total protein and albumin were higher at the end of follow up in the group with abnormal value. No significant change was obtained for LFTs in the group with normal value. Our findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may improve markers of liver function in adolescents with abnormal LFTs. More randomized controlled trial with longer follow-up time will be required. © 2019 BioFactors, 45(3):335-342, 2019.

RESUMO

Olive leaf extract is a rich source of phenolic compounds and oleuropein which is well-known regarding its antioxidant and antimicrobial attributes. However, the mentioned phenolic compounds will lose their beneficial properties during storage and induce undesirable aftertaste in food products. In this study, olive leaf extract-bearing nanoliposomes were produced via the ethanol injection method and using phosphatidyl choline plus cholesterol as the reagents for the wall material. Later, the prepared nanocarriers were examined in regard to their zeta potential, stability, encapsulation efficiency, and particle size. Moreover, the prepared nanoliposome-loaded yogurt samples were examined considering syneresis, antioxidant activity, pH, acidity, color, and sensorial properties. The mean particle size of the fabricated nanoliposomes was in the range of 25-158 nm. Also, the entire formulation had a negative charge. The encapsulation efficiency was between 70.7 to 88.2%. Besides, the application of nanoliposomes in yogurt improved the antioxidant activity, and unlike the yogurt with nonencapsulated olive extract, no significant changes in color and sensorial attributes were observed and even the syneresis rate was minimized. To conclude, olive leaf phenolics can be entrapped within nanoliposomes with a considerable encapsulation efficiency for application in food products like yogurt to increase their nutritional value and public acceptance.

RESUMO

Nano packaging is currently one of the most important topics in food packaging technologies. The aim of the application of this technology in food packaging is increasing shelf life of foods by preventing internal and external corruption and microbial contaminations. Use of silver nanoparticles in food packaging has recently attracted much attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nano-silver packaging in increasing the shelf life packages of nuts in an In vitro model. In this experimental study, the effects of different nano-silver concentrations (0, 1, 2 and 3 percent) on biological and chemical properties of 432 samples of nuts including walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pistachios were evaluated during 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 months. In most samples, different concentrations of nano-silver (1, 2 and 3 %) significantly reduced total microbial count, mold and coliform counts compared to control group and the 3% nano-silver concentration was more effective than other concentrations (P<0.05). Moreover, using this packaging yielded an antioxidant effect especially when 2% and 3% nano-silver concentrations were used. Nano-silver also prevented growth of mold and so prevented aflatoxin production in all treatment groups. Results of chemical and biological tests showed that the silver nanoparticles had a significant effect on increasing the shelf life of nuts. The highest shelf life belonged to pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts with 20, 19, 18 and 18 months, respectively. The shelf life was associated with amount of silver nanoparticles. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed when 3% nano-silver concentration was used in pistachios. The shelf life of control groups in similar storage conditions were calculated for an average of 13 months. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate the efficacy of nano-silver packing in increasing shelf life of nuts. Hence, use of nano-silver packaging in food industry, especially in food packaging is recommended.
